No one injured in Saskatoon apartment fire
Nobody was injured during a structure fire at a building in Saskatoon early Wednesday evening.
Firefighters say crews arrived at the scene in the 1100 block of McKercher Drive around 7 p.m. to find smoke and flames coming from a balcony.
They say all occupants of the building were safely evacuated, and crews were able to put out the blaze from the outside.
Large fans have been used to remove any lingering smoke and toxins from the suite, and a fire investigator is on scene to examine what happened.

Kitchener students host garage sale to support the community
Students at a Kitchener public school spent months researching issues facing the local community and put together a garage sale on Thursday to help raise funds for The House of Friendship. Grade 8 students at Groh Public School conducted interviews looking into issues like food insecurity, a lack of access to clothing, a need for school supplies and the importance of having a sense of community. 'After we understood the needs of what people are struggling with, we came up with 100 ideas and landed with a garage sale,' said student Jana Eljayal. Students collected all kinds of items for the community garage sale and started selling products at the school on Thursday. 'There's CD's, clothing, books, shoes, sports equipment and toys as well,' said student Tatiana Voros. All proceeds are going to The House of Friendship. 'It makes me feel good. Especially because we were able to put this together in a very short amount of time. So I'm pretty amazed of how much we were able to accomplish. I feel really happy that a bunch of people are going to have a lot of good memories with these toys,' said student Ameen Adedeji. 'Some people don't have this stuff in life. We know a lot of people enjoy a lot of this. Maybe some people want clothes of another colour, or toys they can play with their friends or their family. Giving this to people is just good,' said student Harjap Ahuja. The sale wraps up Thursday at 7 p.m. The students have also launched a funding page to collect community donations.

‘Needs to be done in the right way': Concerns about tree carvings in Bois-des-Esprits Park
Tree carvings in the Bois-des-Esprits Park have gone too far, according to one city councillor. Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) filed a motion at the Riel Community Committee asking that the public service look into the practice of tree carvings. He said some residents in the area have complained that carvings are being done on live trees. 'It started well and it was carved into these old, dead trees. And then, it's the views of some people in the ward, gone too far,' said Mayes. 'There's some complaints that people are carving into live trees and people are sort of using it like carving their initials or anniversary celebrations. That's not really what the goal was.' Carvings started to pop up around 2009 when a local woodcarver decorated the forest with spirit carvings. There are now dozens of spirit carvings throughout the forest, but they were all carved into dead trees. Cory Crook, a general board member with the Royalwood Neighbourhood Association, said the new carvings can be beautiful, but concerns have been raised. 'It's starting to impact the safety of walking through the forest, so there's a lot of trees that are dying right next to the path that are a danger to people walking by. Also just jeopardizing the actual environment,' said Crook. This is why Crook wants the city to look into the issue and see if a solution can be found. 'I think that there could possibly be some sort of way to permit carvings to continue the spirit of what has begun as, and it continues to be something that's really wonderful, but it needs to be done in the right way.' Mayes said he wants two things to come from this recommendation – to get an understanding of how bad the carving situation is in the park and to educate the public on why not just anyone is allowed to carve into trees. 'I don't want this to get out of hand on my watch,' said Mayes. 'So let's get staff in there to look at it and try and come up with something that'll work for the community.' In a statement emailed to CTV News, a city spokesperson said carving trees is not allowed in parks or on public property unless permission is obtained from the city. 'We have in the past provided limited permission to professional carvers to create preapproved designs in Bois-des-Esprits. ‘She's my best friend': Riding horse to graduation a dream come true for Saint John high school student

(Nick Moore/CTV Atlantic) A student in Saint John was riding high when she received her high school diploma Thursday thanks to a special guest. Kenzie Simmons was taken to the graduation stage at Simonds High School by her horse Blondie. 'I'm just so glad I could bring her,' said Kenzie, standing next to Blondie shortly after receiving her diploma. 'She's my best friend.' The 17-year-old said she's always had a dream of being able to ride a horse to collect her diploma. 'It felt like it was something I needed to do,' she said. 'I didn't want to go out any other way.' Krista Simmons, Kenzie's mother, knew the request would mean a great deal to her daughter. 'Kenzie is autistic, she's struggled with school very much the last few years,' said Simmons. 'Her whole world is her horse, and her happy place is the barn. That's when you see her smile.' Kenzie and her family asked school principal Jennifer Carhart about bringing Blondie to the event. The family and Carhart put a plan together to make the dream happen. 'It's what it's all about as teachers,' said Carhart. 'Giving kids opportunities, watching them succeed, and being there to support them.' Kenzie said the relief and joy of receiving her high school diploma was made all the sweeter because Blondie was there. 'It's definitely going to be a big moment that I'll remember for a long time,' she said.
