Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the long-awaited Yellow Line of
Bengaluru Metro
on August 10, a move seen as a key milestone in the city's transport infrastructure.
Along with the inauguration, the Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for Phase 3 of the metro network, a major expansion planned under his third term. The announcements were made by Bengaluru South MP
Tejasvi Surya
and Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday.
What you need to know about the Yellow Line
The Yellow Line stretches over 19.15 kilometres from RV Road to Bommasandra, covering 16 stations. It links key hubs such as Silk Board Junction, BTM Layout, Electronic City, and Bommasandra Industrial Area. The total project cost is estimated at Rs 5,056.99 crore, reported PTI.
The line is expected to serve close to eight lakh riders per day. It is being seen as a game-changer for Bengaluru South, where rapid growth in residential and commercial activity has outpaced public transport infrastructure.
The Silk Board Junction, notorious for traffic snarls, is likely to see considerable relief.
The 19.15-km corridor connecting RV Road to Bommasandra will significantly boost connectivity across southern Bengaluru, easing long-standing traffic bottlenecks and serving nearly eight lakh commuters daily.
Tejasvi Surya noted that the Prime Minister's personal insistence ensured the line would meet its targeted August 15 launch, with the formal opening now scheduled for August 10.

Metro phase 3 launch to follow
The Yellow Line inauguration will be accompanied by the foundation stone-laying for Phase 3 of Namma Metro, a 44.65-km expansion project estimated to cost Rs 15,611 crore. According to the government, this expansion was approved within the first 100 days of the Modi government's third term.
The new phase will bring metro connectivity to more neighbourhoods across the city, strengthening last-mile urban mobility.
Together with the Yellow Line, Phase 3 is expected to benefit around 25 lakh people in Bengaluru South alone.
Broader impact
Officials and local leaders have said the metro expansion aligns with the broader vision of reducing Bengaluru's traffic congestion and offering reliable, mass-based alternatives to private transport. With increasing population density in the southern belt, the Yellow Line is viewed as a strategic addition to ease commuting stress and promote sustainable city planning.

Wildlife board shoots down ethanol plant near tiger corridor

Hyderabad: The Telangana Board for Wildlife has rejected a proposal for a grain-based ethanol plant and 3 MW power unit at Metpalle village in Kagaznagar mandal in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district, citing its proximity to a key tiger corridor and concerns raised by locals and forest officials. Promoted by Aithanoli Cibus Products, the 38-acre project site lies just 30 metres from the reserve forest (Asifabad Range, Garlapet block) and 64 metres from the eastern forest boundary (Gondi beat of Kagaznagar Range, Garlapet Extension IV). Although the land is technically revenue terrain outside notified forest area, it abuts the Kagaznagar forest division, a landscape increasingly recognised for tiger movement and breeding. Forest officials underlined the risks, pointing out that the corridor is regularly used by leopards and tigers. "The project is located very close to the tiger corridor and uses a lot of water and also discharges effluents and poses a threat to tigers and other wildlife," an official said. Importantly, even though the company managed to secure environmental clearance and forest clearance, the project still requires mandatory wildlife approval under section 38(I)(g) of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 — applicable to all projects in or near tiger reserves and wildlife corridors. 6 other projects get nod The board, which met on Monday, however, approved six other proposals. Four involved laying of optical fibre cables (OFCs). A forest official clarified: "Wherever there is already an existing right of way, we have cleared the proposals for OFCs. When there is no right of way, we have cleared but forwarded to the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) for further clearance." Additionally, the board okayed the improvement of an existing road in the Pakal Wildlife Sanctuary in Mahabubabad district and gave in-principle approval for setting up a hospital on two acres inside the sanctuary, the latter subject to clearance by the NBWL.

Bill to penalise litterbugs passed

Porvorim: The House passed the crucial Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) (Amendment) Bill, which has provision to penalise people caught littering not just public spaces, but private ones too. The bill facilitates a fine of Rs 300 for the first offence, with subsequent offences attracting fines of up to Rs 3 lakh. Opposition leader Yuri Alemao asked why imprisonment as a deterrent was not included in the amendment bill. It was passed after a brief discussion on provisions, and with amendments suggested by Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral. The House also passed the Goa Tax on Infrastructure (Amendment) Bill, introduced by TCP minister Vishwajit Rane, which aims to make payment of infrastructure tax by builders and developers easier. Opposition MLAs questioned govt's intent in allowing payments in two installments. To the point raised by Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on whether similar benefits will be extended to Goans for constructing their houses, the CM said such a law is in the pipeline. Passing of the Goa Public Universities Bill, with a provision to facilitate setting up of multi-disciplinary universities was deferred till Friday following Opposition members' demands that the bill be sent to the select committee.
