Flowering Plants For Window Boxes 2025: Here are 13 plants to that don't need a garden to thrive

According to the Scottish Environmental Horticulture Growth Strategy there are over one million people in Scotland who are regular gardeners .

From communal tenement gardens to expansive private grounds, we love our borders, rockeries, lawns and patios.
It's hugely satisfying to see a plant you've cared for bloom into beautiful flowers, but you need to be careful what you choose and where you place it.
But not all of us are lucky enough to have access to a garden, in which case you can still exercise your green fingers on window boxes perched outside windows.
And there are plenty of pretty flowering plants that can thrive in these restricted conditions - even in the notoriously unpredictable Scottish climate .
Here are 13 of our favourites.
1 . Viola
Hardy and cheerful, violas bloom for months even in the notoriously-fickle Scottish weather. They tolerate partial shade and bring vivid splashes of purple, yellow, and blue to any window box. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales
2 . Pansy
From the same group of plants as the Viola, but with larger flowers, Pansies come in a wide range of colours and are equally resiliant making them a great choice for Scottish window boxes. Perfect for cooler climates, pansies provide bold, colorful blooms through spring and autumn. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales
3 . Lobelia
The glorious trailing Lobelia produces masses of tiny blue, white, or purple flowers and positively thrives in the cool, damp conditions otherwise known as a Scottish summer. It is ideal for softening the edges of window boxes and flowers prolifically all the way from late spring to early autumn - offering great value for money. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales
4 . Pelargonium
Often (mistakenly) refered to as Geraniums, Pelargoniums offer vibrant summer color and will flower even in breezy, coastal Scottish conditions. Their drought-tolerance also helps during unexpected dry spells, while their upright or trailing forms suit any window box. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales

We previously told how plans have been submitted for the new branch on Edinburgh's busy Rose Street. The shop replaces American restaurant Calistoga. In a post on social media, the fashion brand confirmed it would be opening its first ever Scottish store. The post read: "We thought it was about time for our Scottish debut. "See you soon Edinburgh." Shoppers were left excited by the news and flocked to the comments. One person said: "At least we finally have one in Scotland. Come to Aberdeen next!" Another wrote: "Oh my gosh I am excited and skint already. It definitely was time for a Scottish one." A third commented: "OMG is it Christmas again already?" High street chain with 185 stores launches 70% off closing down sales ahead of 25 shops shutting A fourth added: "Hurrah! Can't believe it's taken so long!" While a fifth said: "That's the news we were waiting for." Lucy and Yak was founded in 2017 by couple Christopher Renwick and Lucy Greenwood. He had started by making tobacco pouches from old clothes in New Zealand, whilst living in a van they called Yak. They soon moved back to their home of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, and whilst selling second-hand clothes, realised the popularity of dungarees. After sourcing materials from India, they began to sell their signature dungarees in a variety of different styles. And now they have stores all across the UK - with the first opening in Brighton in 2019. All the fabrics used by Lucy and Yak are sustainable, such as organic cotton, recycled polyester, or dead stock fabric left over from other brands. They also use bamboo, linen made from flax, hemp fabric, and Lenzing Ecovero which is an eco-responsible viscose fabric.

Stacey Solomon 'kept quiet' about incredible body transformation amid Strictly Come Dancing rumours Stacey Solomon has posted her stunning body transformation to Instagram Stacey wants to be strong and healthy for her children (Image: Getty Images) TV personality and presenter Stacey Solomon, known for her show Sort Your Life Out, has shared her gorgeous body transformation on Instagram. Posting photos in a stunning black bikini, Stacey flaunted her new figure while spreading body positivity. ‌ In a lengthy caption, Stacey explained that she had "kept quiet" about her fitness routine and that she wants to be strong and healthy for her children. Stacey's impressive transformation comes as she's rumoured to be appearing on the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing, due to return this autumn. ‌ The photos were taken while the star was on holiday with her husband, fellow TV presenter Joe Swash, and their five children: Zachary, Leighton, Rex, Rose, and Belle. ‌ Stacey said: "Feeling beautiful my sister hyped me up today & made me feel really pretty so I'm posting these love you Jem. Also my 3 day blow dry made it to the pool cave for at least 3 mins #buzzing "P.S my body looks a little different to last years summer holiday. "I am actually so proud of myself because I've stuck to my weight training consistently since February. ‌ "Kept quiet and just got my head down & kept going. "I genuinely only do it because I want to be so strong. Like boss b**ch strong. "I want to forever be able to pick up my babies with ease & carry double buggies on my shoulder when necessary ‌ "I feel so much stronger this year which is so empowering & yes my body has changed but honestly I loved my body aesthetically last year as much as I do this year. "I've always been beautiful no matter what shape or size. "So I suppose what I'm trying to say is… Don't commit to fitness just for the looks. ‌ "Do it so you can wrestle your 17 year old & carry all three of your toddlers in 40 heat & you'll enjoy the journey more" Content cannot be displayed without consent Currently Stacey is also rumoured to be taking to the Strictly Come Dancing dancefloor, and she is reportedly "too busy" for Loose Women in an update regarding her future on the programme. ‌ The beloved panellist hasn't featured on the ITV lunchtime show since the landmark 25 Hour Talkathon in December 2024. However, sources have maintained that between her family commitments and other television projects, mum-of-five Stacey, 35, simply cannot find the time to make a comeback. The celebrity line-up for 2025 has already started with reality star, Dani Dyer, Gladiator Nitro - aka Harry Aikines-Aryeetey - and footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Read the latest here. Goodbye Boring T-Shirts – This Is The Chic Top Fashion People Can't Stop Wearing

Damson Madder, Cassia Shrunken Rugby Ganni, Multicolour Striped Rib Tank Top COS, Clean Cut Regular T-shirt Arket, Short-Sleeve Polo Shirt Faithfull The Brand, Antibes Striped Linen Top Monki, Open-Knit Cotton Tank Top Glassworks, Green Rainbow Striped Cropped Tee Aligne, Char Boucle Striped Top Reformation, Rowan Crew Tee With Nothing Underneath, Devon Jumper ME + EM, Striped Pouf Sleeve Tee Free People, Sailor Tube Co-Ord Every August, Copenhagen Fashion Week is splashed across our social media feeds (and our saved folders) with looks that are playful yet somehow completely put-together. As always, the Scandi girls showed up this year with their signature mix of minimalism-meets-maximalism that somehow looks so effortless. Think flip-flops with frocks, granny-chic crochet bandanas, dresses worn over trousers and chaotic layering that really shouldn't work, but absolutely does. But amidst the more out there 'wait, can I actually pull that off?' looks, one trend stood out for the simple fact that it was more wearable than most: stripes. More specifically, striped tops with their preppy edge across polos, tank tops, and even tube tops. The city looked like it was hosting a colourful remake of Beetlejuice , and I'll be honest, we're definitely into it. ©Getty Images/Victor VIRGILE/Gamma-Rapho/Jacopo Raule Of course, stripes have been slowly making a splash across runways all year. Take Miu Miu, for example, where cropped striped polos and crewnecks have been walking the catwalk for a few seasons now, in shades ranging from classic navy and white to orange and red mustard with brown. Over at Bottega Veneta's SS25 show, a striped scarf top was paired with a matching midi skirt, while Chanel Cruise 25 showed an array of striped co ords. Miu Miu, Striped T-Shirt While 2025's stripe resurgence has largely been centred around bright combinations, the more classic Breton striped tops are still as chic as ever. Beloved by French girls everywhere and elegant dressers such as Kate Middleton, nautical navy and white striped tops and jumpers are just as popular, adding a touch of polish to the trend. Zara, Striped Knit Top Janka Polliani at Copenhagen Fashion Week ©Getty Images/Edward Berthelot As for styling, a striped top presents endless potential, as the cobblestone Danish streets proved. For a smart casual look, style a long-sleeved top with tailored bermuda shorts and loafers (a combination popular with countless influencers). Alternatively, opt for a cropped polo à la Miu Miu, paired with high-rise jeans, like Janka Polliani. Gabriella Karefa Johnson at Copenhagen Fashion Week ©Getty Images/Christian Vierig If your style is more whimsical, take notes from Gabriela Karefa Johnson, who mixed and matched shades with careful abandon – pairing her sorbet-hued striped polo with a white and navy lined mini and a red breton-striped jacket tied around the waist. For a more chaotic Gen Z-approved look, layer your striped top under a slinky slip dress over trousers or style a baggy striped polo with a lace skirt and suede trainers. Of course, if you're looking to splurge, there are plenty of designer options from Miu Miu to Faithfull The Brand. However, if you haven't quite budgeted three figures for wardrobe staples, the high street is awash with brilliant designs. Case in point, Damson Madder's Cassia rugby top, whose green stripes have proven popular with fashion editors and influencers alike. For a cool girl-approved take, look to Ganni's colourful striped tank, while Reformation offers a chic crewneck. All of which to say, whatever your style, there's a brilliant striped top for you.
