Choosing music as a career: Musician Evan Low talks NDP songs and touring with Mandopop star A-mei

In this special episode of Music Lab, ST's music correspondent Eddino Abdul Hadi hosts award-winning Singaporean composer, producer, and music director Evan Low.
A recipient of the National Arts Council's Young Artist Award in 2024, Low has worked on over 200 songs.

He is best known for being a co-composer and musician on recent National Day Parade songs The Road Ahead (2021) sung by artistes such as Linying, Not Alone (2024) by Benjamin Kheng and the 2018 remake of We Are Singapore.
The artiste also known as Evanturetime has also toured with international pop star and Taiwanese singer A-mei and has performed to massive crowds in venues such as the Beijing National Stadium in China.
Low, who first took piano lessons at the age of five, graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Music and Audio Technology. He then honed his skills at famed American music school Berklee College of Music, thanks to scholarships from the school as well as the Media Development Authority.
This episode was recorded and filmed in front of a live audience of nearly 80 attendees on June 3 - at swish nightspot Rasa at Republic Plaza, as part of the ST Podcast Live! Sessions celebrating 180 years of The Straits Times in 2025.

The Britpop band's sell-out concerts this month could lift headline inflation by as much as four basis points if they coincide with the Office for National Statistics' data collection dates, according to economists. A jump in the consumer prices index would be unwelcome ahead of a crucial autumn for the Bank of England as it decides whether it can carry on cutting interest rates even as prices spike. The situation echoes Taylor Swift's UK tour last year when some commentators argued that it helped to fuel services inflation, primarily by pushing up hotel prices. However, any effect will be temporary and contained to July and August's data as the tour moves on to North America in September before returning to London long after possible data collection dates. The Oasis reunion caused a scramble to see the most successful band of the 1990s Britpop era with fans paying hundreds of pounds for tickets, while songs such as Live Forever, Wonderwall and Don't Look Back in Anger re-entered the UK singles chart. TD Securities said headline inflation will be lifted by four basis points at most with its data showing hotel prices booked one day in advance of the Aug 8 concert were, compared with the same period last year, 65 per cent higher for three-star hotels and up 50 per cent for four-star stays. Capital Economics also pointed to a possible effect from one of the band's Manchester concerts in July that happened the day after a possible collection date. If in doubt, they may want to sit on the sidelines,' he added. While the central bank policymakers cut interest rates last week by a quarter point, officials are becoming more wary over price pressures. They are particularly concerned about whether it causes second-round effects as workers try to make up lost income. The Bank of England now expects inflation to peak at 4 per cent in September, driven by a stronger-than-expected surge in food bills. Mr James Rossiter, head of global macro strategy at TD Securities, said the Oasis concerts and Fringe festival 'put immense upward pressure on hotel prices in Edinburgh'. 'It's important to note that Edinburgh has a small weight in the hotel CPI index,' Mr Rossiter said. 'At a stretch, if prices remain where they are, this could temporarily boost UK headline inflation by about 3 to 4 basis points in August.' The ONS has tweaked how it collects hotel prices after recent volatility caused by surges in demand. Instead of relying on quotes on a single day, it now takes price readings at different times during the month. Barclays estimates that fans expect to spend more than £1 billion (S$1.7 billion) attending the Oasis tour – an average of £766 per person. However, economists believe that such events are unlikely to be a major boost for the economy as gig-goers merely offset the extra spending elsewhere. BLOOMBERG

Taylor Swift announces new album, The Life Of A Showgirl

NEW YORK - American singer Taylor Swift relishes announcing her albums in dramatic fashion. On Aug 12, she did it again, revealing the name of her 12th original studio album, The Life Of A Showgirl, when a countdown clock on her website ticked down to 12.12am Eastern time (12.12pm Singapore time). The 35-year-old did not disclose the release date of the album, or any other information about its tracks. Known for meticulously placing Easter eggs before announcements, Swift's team set off speculation from her hyperattentive fan base by posting a carousel of photos on Instagram on Aug 11. Could the 12 photos, taken at stops on the Eras Tour, correspond with the singer-songwriter's 12th studio album? Did the pattern of orange outfits align with Swift's practice of colour-coding her catalog? 'Thinking about when she said 'See you next era…,'' the post's caption teased. The announcement coincided with the news that Swift would be making a rare media appearance on the podcast New Heights, which is hosted by her boyfriend Travis Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce. The fan theorising began to build on Aug 11, when the podcast posted to social media a teaser advertising a 'VERY special' mystery guest in silhouette. Her appearance was confirmed on Aug 11, when the podcast's social feeds posted a short snippet revealing Swift sitting alongside Travis Kelce. The decision to appear on New Heights may be more than just favouritism. The Kelce brothers' show has its own huge fan base. In August, it was ranked 10th in audience reach in the United States. Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs star tight end, has mentioned Swift sparingly on the podcast, which features a crossover of sports and pop culture topics. But every public appearance from the couple has been closely dissected since their relationship became public in 2023. Swift has been largely quiet since her mammoth world tour ended in December 2024 after traversing five continents over nearly 150 shows. But Swift announced in late May that she had bought back the master recordings of her first six albums from the investment firm Shamrock Capital, giving her ownership of all of her music videos, concert films, album art and photography and unreleased songs. It was a momentous deal – worth a reported US$360 million (S$463 million), according to Billboard magazine – that ended a saga over the recordings that began in 2019 when music manager Scooter Braun acquired the catalog. Mr Braun sold it to Shamrock the following year, prompting Swift to begin the process of re-recording those works and releasing them as Taylor's Version. 'All I've ever wanted was the opportunity to work hard enough to be able to one day purchase my music outright with no strings attached, no partnership, with full autonomy,' Swift wrote in a letter that announced her purchase. Her most recent original studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, was released in April 2024 after she announced it while accepting a Grammy. Though Swift has kept a low profile, she has been a frequent target of US President Donald Trump. Swift endorsed former US vice-president Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election (despite Mr Trump's posting of artificial intelligence-generated images that falsely suggested that the singer had endorsed him). Mr Trump later said he preferred the wife of one of Kelce's teammates, who reportedly liked a social media post supporting Mr Trump. Taylor Swift announces new album called ‘The Life of a Showgirl'

Music superstar Taylor Swift on Aug 12 announced her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl. Swift, who has won 14 Grammys including an unprecedented four trophies for album of the year, announced the album in a podcast episode with her boyfriend Travis Kelce. 'This is my brand new album, The Life of a Showgirl,' Swift said while holding a blurred-out version of the album cover, in a clip of the New Heights podcast on Instagram. Swift's website said the official release date of the album would be announced later. The vinyl version of the album is available for pre-order on Swift's website at US$30 (S$38). The cassette version costs US$20, and a CD with a poster of Swift is available for US$13. The megastar, whose record-breaking Eras tour was the first to surpass US$1 billion in revenue, announced the album after she purchased the master recordings of her first six albums in May, giving her control of all of her music after a dispute with her former record label.
