Shamit Shome has banged the drum to play footie for his parents' home country of Bangladesh.

And FIFA has answered that call, allowing the Cavalry FC star midfielder the opportunity to become a select player for the Asian nation.

Shome is now eligible to represent the Bangladesh national team after soccer's governing body, FIFA, approved his application for a one-time change of association from Canada.

The move comes hours before Shome and Cavalry (1W-2L-1D) play Saturday against host — and unbeaten — HFX Wanderers FC (3-0-2) in Halifax (3:30 p.m., TSN5, OneSoccer.ca).

Shome, born in Edmonton to Bangladeshi parents, represented Canada at several youth levels before earning two senior caps in 2020.

Because of his previous association with the country of his birth, he was required to apply for a one-time switch to be eligible to join the Bangladesh national team at the international level.

'I was raised with Begali culture, and I'm very excited by the chance to represent Bangladesh, the birth country of my parents and a country I hold very close to heart,' Shome said. 'I will forever be grateful for the opportunities I received within the Canadian men's national team program, from the under-18 level to the senior level. I feel now it sht right time to test myself with Bagnladesh at an international level and within the Asian Football Confederation.'

Shome is eligible to be sleected by Bangladesh during the upcoming FIFA international window, which will include a 2027 Asia Cup qualifying match against Singapore on June 10 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

OTTAWA – Canada will be aiming to level their record at 2-2 when it plays Serbia on Sunday to cap off the first week of women's Volleyball Nations League action. Canada slipped to 1-2 with a 3-0 loss to Japan in a best-of-five match played Saturday in front of more than 5,100 spectators at the Arena at TD Place. Canada dropped the match to Japan 24-26, 20-25, 19-25. The unbeaten Japan squad led in attack points (39-33), serving (7-3) and made fewer errors 19-30). 'Japan is really tough to play against, and we were right there with them,' said Canadian setter Brie O'Reilly of Langley, B.C. 'We're just missing those after-20 (points) plays and finishing sets. 'We need to stay aggressive and take confidence that there was a lot of our game that was really great.' O'Reilly said the Canadians need to server more aggressively against Serbia and 'just keep our block defence systems working a bit more cohesively.' Kiera Van Ryk of Surrey, B.C., led the scoring for Canada with 13 points and also set a personal best with a serve clocked at 113 kilometres per hour. Yukiko Wada of Japan led her team with 20 points. Canada opened the VNL schedule with a win over Bulgaria and then lost a Thursday match to Netherlands. Mr. Dogg is slated to take to the stage at 5:45 p.m. The Lions and Elks are set to going at 7 p.m. This is the fourth straight year that Lions owner Amar Doman has brought in a marquee musical artist for the opener. The match-up between B.C. and Edmonton features a duel of Canadian quarterbacks, with Nathan Rourke (born in Victoria, raised in Oakville, Ont.) under centre for the home side and Tre Ford (Niagara Falls) at the controls for the Elks. This is the first time in league history that a Week 1 game has had two starting quarterbacks from Canada. It will be the 12th time since 1950 with a game featuring two Canadian starting quarterbacks. The game also features two rookie head coaches in B.C.'s Buck Pierce and Edmonton's Mark Kilam. The last time two first-year coaches squared off against one another was in 2019, when the Hamillton Tiger-Cats' Orlando Steinauer and Saskatchewan Roughriders ' Craig Dickenson were on the opposites sides.
