Did the Simpsons really predict Syria's future in 2029?

Al Bawaba04-04-2025

ALBAWABA - The Simpsons released an episode called "Visit to Syria in 2029," in which the famous cartoon family was taken aback by Syria's quick post-war recovery, according to recent X and Facebook postings.
The picture that was posted with these allegations shows a character who resembles the country's incoming president, Ahmed Al-Shara, and futuristic images of Syria, implying a promising future for the country.
Misbar, a fact-checking website, has verified that the assertion is untrue. The picture wasn't lifted from a genuine Simpsons episode; rather, it was created by artificial intelligence. Furthermore, Fox didn't air an episode with that name. The most current episode, titled "The Flandshees of Innersimpson," aired on March 31, 2025.
According to the AI detection tool Hive, the shared picture was entirely created by AI.
This false information was spread at the same time as Syria's political landscape changed when Bashar al-Assad's administration collapsed and a new government was installed. According to a recent survey by the Economist, 80% of Syrians said they felt more free than they had in the past, and 70% said they were optimistic about the future.
Despite The Simpsons' notorious "predictions," the majority of these claims—including this most recent AI-generated hoax—have been thoroughly disproved.

Syrian Presidential decree grants Eid al-Adha bonus to state workers, retirees

President Ahmed Al-sharaa has issued a decree ordering the disbursement of a one-time financial grant to civil and military employees of the Syrian state in celebration of Eid al-Adha. According to the decree, state employees—both civilian and military—will receive a bonus of 500,000 Syrian pounds. Additionally, retirees, including civilian and military pensioners, will be granted 300,000 Syrian pounds. This comes just almost two months after the government had issued a similar one-time bonus for Eid al-Fitr, which amounted to the equivalent of a full month's salary for state workers. The bonuses are part of government efforts to ease the economic burdens facing Syrians amid a deepening financial crisis and high inflation rates.

Syria signs $7 billion energy deal with Qatar, US, Turkey

In a major move to revitalize its devastated energy infrastructure, Syria has signed a USD 7 billion agreement with a consortium of Qatari, American, and Turkish companies. The deal, announced on Thursday, aims to produce 5,000 megawatts of electricity—enough to supply nearly half of the country's power demands. The signing ceremony took place at the presidential palace in Damascus, attended by President Ahmed al-Sharaa and the US envoy for Syria, Thomas Barrack. The agreement marks one of the most significant international investments in Syria since the start of the country's long-running conflict. Officials hope the project will be a key step toward stabilizing the energy grid, which has been severely damaged by more than a decade of war. The power sector in Syria has suffered repeated setbacks due to airstrikes, fuel shortages, and limited foreign investment.

US envoy meets with Syrian president after sanctions lifted

The US ambassador to Turkey, who also serves as the envoy to Syria, announced on Saturday that he had met with Syria's leader following the recent easing of US sanctions on the country. Tom Barrack met with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa in Istanbul and emphasized America's continued support for the Syrian people after years of conflict and hardship. In a statement, Barrack said, 'I reiterated the US support for the Syrian people after so many years of conflict and violence... President Trump's goal is to enable the new government to create the conditions for the Syrian people to not only survive but thrive.' He further highlighted that the lifting of sanctions aims to maintain the primary US objective—the lasting defeat of Daesh—while providing Syrians with hope for a better future. The meeting included Syria's foreign minister, Assaad Al-Shaibani, and was confirmed by the Syrian president's office. Earlier on the same day, Sharaa also met with Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul. Both leaders expressed their commitment to cooperate in addressing terrorism threats in Syria. Since the ousting of Bashar Al-Assad, Syria's new administration has sought to improve relations with Western countries and ease economic sanctions. However, some governments have hesitated due to concerns over the extremist backgrounds of some key figures in the new leadership. The European Union announced the removal of sanctions earlier this month, with the US following suit last Friday.
