Say hello to new inmates of Ranchi zoo
2
Ranchi: The Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park in Ormanjhi, Ranchi, has welcomed some exciting new residents. After the loss of 'Priyanka', the lone lioness in the park, in May due to an infection, the zoo has welcomed a new pair of lions — a male and a female — through an animal exchange programme.
The 14-year-old male lion named 'Abhay', and 4-year-old 'Shabri' have been brought to the Birsa Zoo from Chhattisgarh's Nandanvan Zoo and safari. They both belonged to the Asiatic lion breed. But that's not all – Birsa zoo has also received a pair of crocodiles, aged about three-four years, from the Chhattisgarh zoo. The crocodile pair has not been given any name yet.
The animals reached the Birsa Zoo on Monday evening, and after health check-ups were done by the zoo vets, they were kept in enclosures for public viewing.
Ashok Kumar Singh, assistant director of Birsa zoo, said, "After the deaths of two
Asiatic lions
, Jaya and Veeru, and a cross-breed lioness Priyanka, the zoo had only a single male lion. Keeping in mind the visitors' increasing demand, the park authority has decided to bring the pair of lions and crocodiles from the Chhattisgarh zoo so that the park can attract more visitors in the coming days."
According to a source at the zoo, the Birsa will send a Himalayan bear, a crocodile, and a porcupine to the Nandanvan Zoo.

‘Lack of announcements a deficiency in service': Railways told to pay Rs 7,000 to family that missed train
Ghaziabad: The district consumer forum has ruled that failure to provide proper information on train schedule through public announcements constitutes a "deficiency of service" under the Consumer Protection Act. The consumer commission made this observation while ordering the Ghaziabad railway station authorities and senior officials at Northern Railways to pay Rs 7,000 as compensation to a family that missed their train due to inadequate announcements. On Feb 29 last year, Muradnagar resident Anubhav Prajapati, along with his wife Priyanka and two children, missed the Chhattisgarh Express to Jhansi. The family had arrived at Ghaziabad railway station well before the train's scheduled departure at 3.20am and waited in the first-class lounge. After an announcement about a 40-minute delay, they moved to platform 3 at 3.25am. However, they found Ayodhya Express stationed there for over 45 minutes. As the clock ticked, there was no further announcement about their train. Railway authorities, who failed to furnish a written explanation, made an oral representation at the forum through their counsel. They argued that they could have allowed a ticket refund, but could not as the train wasn't running more than three hours behind schedule — a prerequisite for refunds under railway policy. The commission agreed while refund couldn't be granted on technical grounds, the railway's failure to make proper announcements to inform the family about the arrival of the train and its departure warranted compensation. "Since no evidence on the part of the railways has been presented on record to claim that there was a proper announcement, the commission treats this as a deficiency of service that resulted in missing the train and caused mental harassment to the passenger," the June 23 order stated. The commission asked the station superintendent, station master, divisional railway manager, and general manager of Northern Railway to pay the compensation within 45 days of the order.

Video: Lionesses, 8 Cubs Wander On To Highway In Gir Somnath, Halt Vehicles
Vehicles came to a halt as a pride of lions wandered out of the forests and on to the highway in Gujarat's Gir Somnath district. A family of lions, comprising two lionesses and eight cubs, were seen on the Ronj Road State Highway near Kodinar, which is around an hour's drive from the famed Gir National Park, the only habitat of Asiatic lions in the world. The family of lions had reportedly been seen in the villages near Kodinar over the last few days and are now being seen around the Kodinar town. They are now being increasingly spotted on the roads too. The viral video comes at a time a lion mating program is underway in the district. Further, among the problems likely troubling lions in the forest areas is a rapidly growing swarm of mosquitoes. Similar visuals had surfaced in February when traffic on the Bhavnagar-Somnath Highway in Gujarat stopped briefly after an Asiatic lion was spotted walking on the road in surprise, halting the movement of vehicles for at least 15 minutes. The 'king of the jungle' was seen crossing a bridge and cars, trucks and bikes stopped to let the lion cross the highway. The video was shot from a car that had stopped on the other side of the road. The incident took place in Gujarat's Amreli district. The lion walked towards a temple down the slope adjacent to the highway. The estimated population of Asiatic lions in Gujarat has increased to 891 against 674 five years ago as per the census conducted this month, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had announced in May. The 16th Asiatic lion census covered 11 districts, including Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Morbi, Surendranagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Amreli, Porbandar and Botad.
