New Falmouth Sainsbury's supermarket plans unveiled

BBC News04-06-2025
Supermarket chain Sainsbury's has announced plans for a state-of-the-art store in Cornwall that would create about 100 jobs. The firm said it was preparing to submit a planning application to Cornwall Council for a new site in Falmouth on brownfield land next to its current supermarket off Falmouth Road. The company added the store would be twice the size of its current one and included a petrol station and an electric vehicle charging hub.If the multi-million pound plans went ahead, Sainsbury's said the current store, car park and units on the adjacent Ponsharden industrial estate would be redeveloped into housing.
Sainsbury's previously secured planning permission for a replacement store on the same site in 2013, but the scheme did not progress.Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury's chief property and procurement officer and managing director of Smart Charge, said the new store would provide a "range of substantial benefits" to the local community.Mr Dunne added: "If our plans are approved, this would represent one of the largest new supermarkets we've opened in the UK for years, demonstrating our confidence in Falmouth and Penryn as a key area of investment for Sainsbury's."

The sacrifices parents make to afford children's school uniform

A survey indicates that over a quarter of parents will go without food or heating to afford school uniform, with many relying on credit cards or 'buy now, pay later' schemes. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has called on schools to reduce branded uniform items, ahead of a new law capping compulsory branded items to three from September 2026. The Children 's Wellbeing and Schools Bill aims to alleviate financial strain on families, with 85 per cent of parents believing schools could cut costs by reducing branded items. While parents largely support the cap, some schoolwear retailers caution that it could lead to higher overall costs if unbranded items prove less durable. School leaders recognise the financial pressures on families, with some already relaxing uniform rules, though one headteacher suggested the cap might hinder behaviour management.
