Cavalry FC hopes defender Daan Klomp is the missing piece of the puzzle
Forge FC midfielder Noah Jensen (left) vies for the ball with Cavalry FC defender Daan Klomp in Hamilton on Oct. 28, 2023. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Nick Iwanyshyn Daan Klomp is back, and Cavalry FC couldn't be any happier. After helping the team win the league championship last year, the 27-year-old defender wanted to explore his options overseas. He signed a contract with RAAL La Louvière in the Belgian pro league, but he says things just didn't work out. 'I explored my options a little bit after my contract (in Belgium) ran out on the first of July this year,' he said. 'Nothing interesting came up that was better than coming back here, so that explains my reasoning for being back here again.' Happy to be back Klomp says he's happy to be back in Calgary and wants to do whatever he can to help Cavalry get back to their winning ways. Klomp is signed through 2027 and says it feels good. 'It feels like home, like I've said before, and I'm just happy to get back, start again, and get my fitness back and hopefully help the team win some more games.' Perfect timing The timing of bringing Klomp back couldn't be any better for Cavalry. In their last four games, they have three losses and a draw. Head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. says adding the two-time CPL defender of the year can only help. 'When you take Tom Brady out of the New England Patriots, things are different,' said Wheeldon. He's the quarterback, and Daan has been very much over the past few seasons a very important part of the way we play with the ball, with or without it, and challenging for trophies, both individual and collective.' Will he play this weekend? The big question now is will Klomp be back in the lineup on Sunday against Vancouver FC? Klomp says we'll have to wait and see. 'Like I said, it's been some time since I trained with a team, and we're about to see today (Friday) how it's going to happen and how I'm feeling. 'I'm looking at Tommy (Wheeldon Jr.) right now if I can be available for this weekend, but I'm excited to see what's coming.' 'We certainly didn't have him come to sit in the stands with the fans,' said Wheeldon. 'He'll be in the 18, whether that's in the 11 or coming in to finish. That will be decided over the next 48 hours.'

Roughriders host Tiger-Cats in potential Grey Cup peek
(Photo credit: John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images) Is Saturday's showdown between the East-leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the West-leading Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina a potential Grey Cup preview? That answer won't be formulated until late November, but it's not wrong to opine that the matinee matchup could help shape the second half of the CFL season. 'If you're a CFL fan, you really look forward to watching a game like this,' Saskatchewan quarterback Trevor Harris said to the Regina Leader-Post. Saskatchewan (7-1) enjoyed a bye week after a 34-6 thumping of Montreal Aug. 2 in Quebec. It owns a 1 1/2-game advantage over Calgary and a game in hand to boot. The Roughriders boast the league's best scoring differential at plus-59. Hamilton (6-3) possesses a one-game lead on Montreal in the East, although its six-game winning streak ended on Aug. 7 with a 41-38 home loss to B.C. The TiCats are 4-0 within their division and might have the league's best pitch-catch combo in Bo Levi Mitchell and Kenny Lawler. Mitchell has thrown for a league-high 2,856 yards and 21 touchdowns with just three interceptions. Lawler has been his favorite target with 783 yards, good for second in the league, and a CFL-best eight scores. 'We're talking about one of the best receivers in the league,' Saskatchewan coach Corey Mace said of Lawler. 'Sometimes (Mitchell) is going to trust his guy and he's going to put it up there.' The Roughriders counter with the 39-year-old Harris, who's completed at least 70 percent of his passes in 11 straight games dating to last season and has hit 13 touchdown passes against only four picks in 2025. 'I don't think there's a quarterback in football that gets the ball out quicker,' Hamilton coach Scott Milanovich said. 'His accuracy is as good or better than ever. All those years of experience are enabling him to know exactly where he wants to go with the football quicker.' Saskatchewan is aiming for a season sweep after rallying in the second half for a 28-23 win on June 14 in Hamilton. That was actually below both teams' per-game averages. The TiCats score 32.3 ppg to lead the league and the Roughriders are second at 29.1.

B.C. Lions look to continue growth against Caleb Evans and the Montreal Alouettes
Halfway through the CFL season, quarterback Nathan Rourke believes his B.C. Lions still have obstacles to overcome — namely, their own mistakes. Article content The Lions (4-5) are coming off an overtime win against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week, but have seen some close games fall the other way this year thanks to one or two errant plays. Article content Article content During the victory in Hamilton, B.C. took eight penalties for a total of 65 yards, and had a giveaway, a fumble and an interception. Article content 'I really feel like for this team, throughout the entire year, the only people really who can get in our way are us, right?' Rourke said. 'We've certainly had our fair share of penalties and dumb mistakes and bad decisions. And it seems, at the end of the day, that's what's stopping us more than the other team. Article content 'So obviously, they're gonna make some plays and stuff like that, but I think we've done a good job managing that. We've just got to make sure that we clean up that stuff, and I think it'll be OK.' Article content All season long, the Lions have been growing, said first-year head coach Buck Pierce. Article content Now the team needs to learn from those lessons, he said. Article content 'That's really what I hope that we've taken from it, is, 'Hey, the past is the past. This is where we are. Understand where we are, understand what it takes for us to get better,'' he said. Article content 'I think I've seen some growth, and I've seen some guys, some light bulbs start to come on a bit, which is good. But we need to just continue to lift the group up, and everybody else gets to that level.' Article content Article content B.C.'s next chance to showcase its growth and climb the West Division standings comes Saturday when the Lions host the Montreal Alouettes (5-4). Article content Article content The Als dropped a 23-22 decision to the Edmonton Elks last week and are looking to snap a two-game skid. They're also looking for their first win against the Lions since Sept. 9, 2022. Article content Montreal will turn to third-string quarterback Caleb Evans this week with both No. 1 Davis Alexander and backup McLeod Bethel-Thompson relegated to the six-game injured list. Article content Alouettes head coach Jason Maas isn't concerned about swapping out another QB. Article content 'We've won games with backups here, with guys that are second- and third-string quarterbacks here over the last three years,' he said. 'We did it already this year, we've done it with a backup quarterback, as people will say. … So you ask me where my belief comes from, it's been shown. We've won games, and that's all I need to see.'
