With a Rs 1,011 crore boost, five railway stations in Nashik are getting a big makeover to manage massive pilgrim rush during Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
Indian Railways has announced a major revamp of five key stations in Nashik district – Nashik Road, Devlali, Odha, Kasbe Sukene, and Kherwadi.
Approved by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Rs 1,011 crore plan aims to improve passenger facilities and train handling capacity in time for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
As per TOI, during a review meeting, top railway officials including Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, evaluated detailed proposals presented by Central Railway's senior team.
Which Stations Are Getting Upgraded?
Devlali Station
Devlali, located near Nashik Road station on the Mumbai side, will see the addition of three new platforms. Two of them will manage traffic from Mumbai and Nashik separately, while the third will cater to passing trains. The station will also get six new lines – including pit lines, sick lines, and stabilising lines – for better train maintenance and parking.
Nashik Road Station
With space limitations, the focus here is on adding two parking lines. Platform 1 will be extended to fit 24-coach trains, and Platform 4 will be upgraded to serve trains from both directions.
This station will become a key holding area during the mela, with five new stabilising lines and a third platform. During non-mela periods, Odha will be used for agricultural and goods transport.
Kasbe Sukene & Kherwadi Stations
Kasbe Sukene's platform will be extended to handle 22-coach trains, double the current capacity. Kherwadi will get two new platforms to accommodate 24-coach trains.
What Other Facilities Are Being Added?
Every station will be equipped with a special 'Mela Tower'—a hub for CCTV surveillance, announcements, control rooms, security, and large holding areas for pilgrims. Wider foot overbridges will also be built for safer and quicker movement.
When Will It All Be Ready?
About half of the work has already started. The rest will begin soon, with land acquisition likely from January 2026.

Mumbai's Versova To Madh Island In 10 Minutes Instead Of 1.5 Hours: Why Green Nod Matters

Curated By : Last Updated: July 28, 2025, 20:10 IST The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has secured clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). (PTI File) Mumbai's Versova-Madh cable-stayed bridge: Ten years after it was proposed, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has secured clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to construct a cable-stayed flyover connecting Madh Island in the western suburbs with Versova, the Indian Express reported. The bridge will provide all-weather connectivity and cut down travel time from one-and-a-half hours to 10 minutes between Madh and Versova. It will help ease traffic in Andheri, Madh, Borivali and Gorai areas of the western suburbs. The cable-stayed bridge between Madh and Versova The distance between Madh and Versova is 21 to 22 km. The idea for the bridge first came up in 1967. The proposed bridge is a cable-stayed flyover spanning about 2.06 km across the Madh Creek. It will be 27.5-m wide, with four lanes (two in each direction). What next after MoEFCC nod? Once the Bombay High Court clearance is received and the formal work order is issued—likely by late 2025, the construction is expected to begin, with full completion around 2028. How long will it take to build? The estimated construction time is approximately 36 months (about 3 years) once work begins. What is the cost of the Madh-Versova bridge? Initial tender estimates (March 2024) were around Rs 1,800 crore, but due to market adjustments, the final cost has risen and is currently pegged at Rs 2,395 crore (including GST, civil works, maintenance). How will Madh-Versova bridge ease travel? Currently, there is no direct road access between Versova and Madh Island. Commuters have to take a long detour via Link Road, S.V. Road, Western Express Highway, often taking 45–60 minutes during peak hours—and potentially up to 90 minutes during heavy traffic or monsoon disruptions. Once completed, the new flyover is expected to cut this journey down to just 5 minutes. The bridge move directly across Versova Creek instead of circling through central suburbs. The current ferry service is often suspended during the monsoons or evenings. The bridge will remain operational 365 days a year. The cable-stayed structure involves fewer piers, minimizing ecological damage to mangroves while providing direct access. Why is Madh Island a popular weekend getaway? Madh Island, located in North-West Mumbai, is famous for its scenic beaches, historic fort, film shoots, and peaceful coastal charm. Surrounded by the Arabian Sea and Malad Creek, it offers a quiet escape from the city's chaos. The island is home to fishing villages like Erangal and Madh, where the local Koli and East Indian communities preserve traditional lifestyles. Its relatively secluded beaches such as Madh Beach, Erangal Beach, and Dana Pani make it a favourite weekend getaway for Mumbaikars. Madh Island is also a hotspot for Bollywood, TV, and ad film shoots, thanks to its rustic settings and private bungalows. Accessible by road from Malad or a short ferry ride from Versova, Madh Island is known not only for its natural beauty but also for its role in Mumbai's cultural and entertainment scene. After Haridwar stampede, CM orders proper arrangements at key temples

Dehradun: A day after eight people died and more than 20 sustained injuries in a stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directed officials to take immediate steps to improve infrastructure and safety at major religious sites across the state. He ordered proper arrangements at temples, including Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi in Haridwar, Purnagiri Dham in Tanakpur, Kainchi Dham in Nainital, Jageshwar Dham in Almora, and Neelkanth Mahadev Temple in Pauri. Dhami said the planned development of the Mansa Devi temple complex and other major temples would be undertaken to increase their capacity. He said shop encroachments must be managed and facilities made accessible to pilgrims. He added that two separate committees would be formed — one each in Kumaon and Garhwal — to oversee preparations and ensure pilgrim safety. The CM directed that the commissioners of both divisions head the committees and include district magistrates, senior superintendents of police, vice-chairpersons of development authorities, and representatives of executing agencies. He stressed the importance of crowd management, registration of devotees, widening of footpaths and stairs, removal of encroachments, and ensuring the availability of all basic facilities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! The stampede at the Mansa Devi temple occurred when panic spread among devotees due to a rumour that an electric wire had snapped on the stairway. Officials from Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited later confirmed there was no exposed live wire at the site. Eyewitnesses and locals blamed the incident on poor crowd control, lack of police presence, and unauthorised encroachments along the route. A magisterial inquiry is underway, and the state has announced Rs 2 lakh compensation for the families of those who died.

Arunachal Guv flags off woman Everesters seven-summit expedition

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Itanagar, Jul 28 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) K T Parnaik on Monday flagged off celebrated woman Everester Kabak Yano's ambitious seven-summit mountaineering expedition, a mission to scale the highest peaks on all seven continents. The flag-off ceremony was held at Raj Bhavan as Yano embarked on one of the most formidable challenges in global mountaineering. In a symbolic gesture, Parnaik handed over a ceremonial ice axe bearing the Indian Tricolour and the Arunachal Pradesh state emblem to Yano, in the presence of state Sports Minister Kento Jini, who also extended financial support to support her mission. Describing the event as a celebration of courage and conviction, Parnaik lauded Yano's determination, calling her journey a representation of the indomitable spirit that dares to dream beyond boundaries. He noted that only a few people across the world have attempted the seven-summit expedition, and praised Yano for her bold commitment to join that elite league. 'Yano carries with her the blessings of the people of Arunachal, the dreams of a new generation, and the resilient, peaceful, and unstoppable spirit of our state," the governor said. He urged her to showcase to the world the strength, grace, and tenacity of a daughter of Arunachal. In a tribute to her earlier feat of summiting Mount Everest on May 21 last year, the governor presented her with the 'Land of Rising Sun' plaque, recognising her as a beacon of inspiration for the entire state. Yano is the fifth woman from the state and the first from the Nyishi community to summit Mount Everest. Sports Minister Kento Jini, in his address, commended the state government's efforts in promoting sports, particularly adventure sports, and highlighted the various incentives and policies designed to support athletes. He emphasised the government's progressive reservation policies for sportspersons, which create greater access to education and employment for talented youth. To inspire future generations, the governor had specially invited students from the Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy, cadets from the 1st Arunachal Pradesh NCC Battalion, and members of the Bharat Scouts and Guides to attend the ceremony. Also present at the occasion were Sports and Youth Affairs secretary Abu Tayeng, Sports director Tadar Apa, and other dignitaries, who extended their support and encouragement to Kabak Yano.
