UBS: Trade Chaos Fans Fed's Caution

Yahoo29-05-2025

SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) slips as UBS warns that tariff uncertainty will keep the Federal Reserve on the sidelines.
UBS Chief Economist Paul Donovan notes that a U.S. trade court invalidated roughly half of President Trump's emergency-power tariffs, lifting a significant tax burden but leaving uncertainty firmly in place.
Futures markets are pricing in two quarter-point Fed rate cuts this yearone in September and another by year-endafter the Fed's own minutes reaffirmed a wait-and-see stance amid policy ambiguity.
Donovan argues that while the court decision eases costs for consumers and companies, it doesn't reset to factory settingsthe ruling will be appealed, and future tariff moves or alternate legislation could reimpose trade taxes. That back-and-forth may prompt businesses to delay investment or hiring and hold off further price increases until the outlook clears.
Investors should care because persistent tariff risks can dampen growth, keep interest rates elevated for longer and weigh on market sentiment.
With the Fed's next policy meeting slated for June 1112, markets will be watching for any shift in guidance on the appeal process or fresh trade-related developments.

China and U.S. trade officials to hold talks in London

U.S. President Donald Trump's top trade officials are meeting their Chinese counterparts in London on Monday for talks aimed at resolving an ongoing trade dispute between the world's two largest economies. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer are representing the U.S. China's foreign ministry said on Saturday that Vice Premier He Lifeng, Beijing's lead trade negotiator, will be in the U.K. between June 8-13, and that a meeting of the "China-U.S. economic and trade consultation mechanism" would take place. The talks come after Trump last week said that he had held a lengthy phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping as both look to avert a full-blown trade war. Diplomatic efforts by both sides have ramped up after weeks of heightened trade tension and uncertainty after Trump announced sweeping import tariffs on China and other trading partners in April. Beijing retaliated, and a tit-for-tat escalation in duties ensued before both sides agreed in Geneva in May to temporarily slash duties and facilitate talks. At the time, the U.S. tariff on Chinese imports was cut from 145% to 30% , while China's levies on U.S. imports were lowered from 125% to 10%. China and the U.S. have since repeatedly accused each other of violating the Geneva agreement, with Washington saying Beijing was slow to approve the export of additional critical minerals to the U.S., while China criticized the U.S. imposing new restrictions on Chinese student visas and additional export restrictions on chips. U.S. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Sunday said that the London talks would focus on moving forward with the Geneva agreement, noting the two sides' strategic interests in each other's markets.

Watch These S&P 500 Levels After Index Hits 6,000 Points For First Time Since February

The S&P 500 surpassed the 6,000-point mark on Friday, extending a rally for stocks that's been fueled by optimism about strong corporate earnings and economic data, as investors await further developments on the trade front. The benchmark index broke out from a pennant pattern last week, indicating a continuation of its recent move higher, while the relative strength index confirms bullish momentum. Investors should track key overhead areas on the S&P 500's chart around 6,100 and 6,575, while also watching major support levels near 5,770 and 5, S&P 500 (SPX) surpassed the 6,000-point mark last week for the first time since February, extending a rally for stocks that's been fueled by optimism about strong corporate earnings and economic data, as investors await further developments on the trade front. The benchmark index has rallied sharply from its early-April low to trade just 2.4% below the record high it established in mid-February. Last month, the S&P 500 posted its biggest monthly gain since November 2023, as concerns about the Trump administration's "Liberation Day" tariffs have subsided. Below, we take a closer look at the S&P 500's chart and apply technical analysis to identify key levels that investors will likely be watching. After climbing above a descending broadening formation, the S&P 500 trended sharply higher before consolidating within a pennant. More recently, the index broke out from the pattern last week, indicating a continuation of its recent move higher. Meanwhile, the relative strength index confirms bullish momentum, but remains below its overbought threshold, providing ample room for further upside. Let's identify two key overhead areas on the S&P 500's chart and also locate major support levels to watch during potential retracements. The first key overhead area to track sits around 6,100. This area may provide resistance near a trendline that connects a series on peaks that formed on the chart between December and February just below the index's record high. Investors can project an upside target above the record high by using the bars pattern tool. When applying the analysis to the S&P 500's chart, we extract the steep move higher following the breakout from the descending broadening formation and reposition it from the pennant's breakout point. This projects a target of around 6,575, about 10% above Friday's close. During retracements, investors should initially watch the 5,770 level. The index could find support in this area near the low of the pennant pattern, which closely aligns with the 200-day moving average (MA) and a range of corresponding trading activity on the chart extending back to September last year. Finally, a close below this level could see the S&P 500 revisit lower support around 5,650. Those who invest in the index may seek buying opportunities in this region near the upward sloping 50-day MA and a horizontal line that links a series of price action on the chart between July and May.
