PM Anwar shares highlights of Kosovo President's visit

The Sun03-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today shared a video clip highlighting the official visit of Kosovo President Dr Vjosa Osmani Sadriu to Malaysia, which began on Thursday.
In a Facebook post, the three-minute, 10-second video featured Osmani inspecting a guard of honour mounted by officers and personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment (Ceremonial) during the official welcome ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex, followed by a bilateral meeting with Anwar.
The video also showed the conferment of the Order of Independence, Kosovo's highest civilian award, on Anwar by President Osmani.
In the caption accompanying the video, Anwar said the state visit by the President of the Republic of Kosovo and her delegation to Malaysia reflected the spirit of friendship and mutual commitment to strengthen bilateral relations and pave the way for broader cooperation between the two countries.
'May this visit open up more strategic opportunities between our two countries, further strengthening our friendship and ushering in a new chapter in Malaysia-Kosovo cooperation,' he said.
Osmani and her delegation arrived in Malaysia on May 1 for a four-day official visit.
Malaysia officially recognised Kosovo on Oct 30, 2008, making it one of the first Asian countries to do so. Diplomatic ties between the two nations were established on March 18, 2011.

Court of Appeal grants Anwar temporary stay in Yusoff Rawther case

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has succeeded in obtaining an ad interim order (temporary stay) of trial proceedings in a sexual assault lawsuit filed against him in 2021 by his former research officer, Muhammed Yusoff Rawther. This means the trial, scheduled to begin on June 16, along with all related proceedings, will be suspended until the full hearing of the stay application on July 21. A three-panel Court of Appeal judges led by Datuk Supang Lian made the unanimous decision to grant the ad-interim order after hearing submissions from Anwar's lawyer, Alan Wong, and Yusoff's lawyer, Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali. "We are of the considered view under Section 44 of the Courts of Judicature Act, we are empowered to make an ad interim order to preserve the integrity of the appellant's (Anwar) stay application pending the disposal of the appeal. "Accordingly, we hereby make an ad interim order to stay all proceedings, including full trial at the High Court pending the disposal of the appellant's stay application," she said in her decision today.

Asian markets extend gains as China-US talks head into second day

HONG KONG: Asian stocks squeezed out more gains Tuesday as the latest round of China-US trade talks moved into a second day, with one of Donald Trump's top advisers saying he expected 'a big, strong handshake'. There is optimism the negotiations -- which come after the US president spoke to Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping last week -- will bring some much-needed calm to markets and ease tensions between the economic superpowers. The advances in Asian equities built on Monday's rally and followed a broadly positive day on Wall Street, where the S&P 500 edged closer to the record high touched earlier in the year. This week's meeting in London will look to smooth relations after Trump accused Beijing of violating an agreement made at a meeting of top officials last month in Geneva that ended with the two sides slashing tit-for-tat tariffs. The key issues on the agenda at the talks are expected to be exports of rare earth minerals used in a wide range of things including smartphones and electric vehicle batteries. 'In Geneva, we had agreed to lower tariffs on them, and they had agreed to release the magnets and rare earths that we need throughout the economy,' Trump's top economic adviser, Kevin Hassett, told CNBC on Monday. But even though Beijing was releasing some supplies, 'it was going a lot slower than some companies believed was optimal', he added. Still, he said he expected 'a big, strong handshake' at the end of the talks. 'Our expectation is that after the handshake, any export controls from the US will be eased, and the rare earths will be released in volume,' Hassett added. He also said the Trump administration might be willing to ease some recent curbs on tech exports. The president told reporters at the White House: 'We are doing well with China. China's not easy. 'I'm only getting good reports.' Tokyo led gains in Asian markets, with Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei, Wellington and Jakarta also well up. 'The bulls will layer into risk on any rhetoric that publicly keeps the two sides at the table,' said Pepperstone's Chris Weston. 'And with the meeting spilling over to a second day, the idea of some sort of loose agreement is enough to underpin the grind higher in US equity and risk exposures more broadly.' Investors are also awaiting key US inflation data this week, which could impact the Federal Reserve's monetary policy amid warnings Trump's tariffs will refuel inflation strengthening the argument to keep interest rates on hold. However, it also faces pressure from the president to cut rates, with bank officials due to make a decision at their meeting next week. While recent jobs data has eased concerns about the US economy, analysts remain cautious. 'Tariffs are likely to remain a feature of US trade policy under President Trump,' said Matthias Scheiber and John Hockers at Allspring Global Investments. 'A strong US consumer base was helping buoy the global economy and avoid a global recession.' However, they also warned: 'The current global trade war coupled with big spending cuts by the US government and possibly higher US inflation could derail US consumer spending to the point that the global economy contracts for multiple quarters.' Diplomatic ties in focus as Polish President meets Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: Polish President Andrzej Duda, who is on his first official visit to Malaysia, was accorded a formal welcome at Perdana Putra Complex here today. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim received Duda upon his arrival at 10 am, followed by the playing of the national anthems of both countries. Duda then inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 personnel from the First Battalion Royal Ranger Regiment, led by Major Nur Ahmad Zaim Zahari. Also present were the Prime Minister's wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, foreign diplomats and senior government officials. Duda is accompanied by his spouse, Agata Kornhauser-Duda, as well as several Cabinet ministers and senior Polish officials. Duda, who assumed office in August 2015, is making the visit at a significant moment, coinciding with Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship and Poland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2025. Following the welcome ceremony, Duda signed the guest book and then proceeded to a bilateral meeting with Anwar. The meeting is expected to explore stronger cooperation in trade and investment, the defence industry, agriculture, the halal sector and agri-commodities. Anwar will later host an official luncheon at Seri Perdana Complex in honour of Duda and his delegation. According to Wisma Putra, Duda is also scheduled to visit the Second Regiment of the Royal Armoured Corps at Kem Sunggala in Port Dickson and deliver a public lecture at the Asia-Europe Institute, Universiti Malaya. The visit underscores the strong and friendly relations between Malaysia and Poland, which have been built on mutual respect and close cooperation since diplomatic ties were established in 1971. In 2024, Poland was Malaysia's eighth-largest trading partner among European Union member states, with total bilateral trade rising by 19.5 per cent to RM5.66 billion compared to 2023. Malaysia's major exports to Poland include electrical and electronic products, rubber products and machinery, while key imports from Poland consist of machinery, equipment and parts, electrical and electronic products and transport equipment.
