Malaysia Ready To Forge Collaboration With Korea Expressway Corporation
KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysia welcomes the potential for collaboration between local industry players and Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) to strengthen infrastructure performance, capacity building and knowledge exchange on smart highway management and digital construction technologies.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said such strategic collaborative initiatives could expedite an integrated and intelligent transport system in Malaysia that is more efficient, safer and sustainable.
"I was truly impressed by how KEC fully leverages technology not only to enhance expressway operations and road user safety but also to support environmental sustainability efforts.
'The use of integrated traffic management systems, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI) for predictive maintenance, alongside the deployment of smart infrastructure, offers valuable insights and inspiration for Malaysia's own efforts to modernise its highway systems,' he said.
He said this in a Facebook post today in conjunction with his working visit to South Korea to attend the 2025 Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Asia Pacific Forum.
KEC is a South Korean national expressway agency that is responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of over 5,000 kilometres of expressways across the country.
Nanta said the technical visit further strengthened Malaysia's commitment to transforming its road infrastructure in line with the direction and vision outlined in the Malaysian ITS Roadmap 2030, which is being developed by the Ministry of Works.
He also expressed his highest appreciation to the leadership and team at KEC, especially managing director Lim Chan Soo, for the warm hospitality and constructive discussions.
"Malaysia hopes this relationship will continue to be strengthened for the construction of safer, smarter, and more sustainable expressway networks for the future,' he said.

Grab eyes US$1.25bil bond sale for acquisitions
Aside from possible acquisitions, Grab said it plans some share buybacks. — Bloomberg HONG KONG: Grab Holdings is planning a US$1.25bil sale of bonds convertible into stock, partly to bulk up its warchest for acquisitions amid signs that talks to take over Gojek parent GoTo Group have stalled. Singapore-based Grab, whose app is ubiquitous in South-East Asia for ride hailing and food delivery, will issue convertible bonds that mature on June 15, 2030, it said in a statement on June 9. The securities will carry a coupon of as much as 0.5% a year, payable semiannually, according to terms of the deal seen by Bloomberg News. Aside from possible acquisitions, Grab said it plans some share buybacks – the company has US$274mil remaining under its share-repurchase programme as of the end of March. The bonds will be redeemable, under certain conditions, from mid- 2028. Grab's offering is the largest Asian convertible-bond deal denominated in US dollars since Ping An's US$3.5bil deal in July 2024, and the biggest by a non-Chinese company since South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix's US$1.7bil issuance in 2023. Ping An last week also issued convertible bonds worth US$1.5bil, denominated in Hong Kong dollars. As for the GoTo acquisition, Grab on June 9 signalled that it was halting or at least pausing a planned US$7bil acquisition. The pair of ride-hailing and food-delivery companies have held on-and-off talks for years but a combination never materialised, partly because of antitrust concerns likely to arise from combining the two dominant players in South-east Asia. 'The parties are not involved in any discussions at this time and Grab has not entered into any definitive agreements,' Grab said in a statement. 'Indonesia continues to be an important country in serving our mission as we continue to outserve our Indonesian customers, driver and merchant-partners.' Grab's stock has advanced 41% in the past 12 months as Grab's profitability improved, but remains down more than 50% since its listing in New York through a merger with a blank-cheque firm in late 2021. Indonesia's antitrust agency said in May it would look into potential risks and urged the companies to ensure any deal will not create a monopoly. Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund Danantara has been considering a role in the combination, possibly helping to assuage concerns in the government resulting from the sale of the national tech champion, Bloomberg News reported last week. A potential sale of GoTo has sparked worries among Indonesia's political leadership about the loss of independence and developer and engineer jobs. Some have also expressed concerns that ride-hailing and food-delivery prices would rise if Grab becomes dominant in a tough economy where consumers are already facing hardship. Grab, the largest of South-East Asia's ride-hailing and delivery firms, has been locked in fierce competition with GoTo for almost a decade. The Singapore-based company is the leading provider in its home market and countries including Malaysia and Thailand. While the rivalry has weighed on its efforts to reach consistent profitability, it has benefited from user growth in the emerging economies it operates in. On-demand transactions – including meal delivery – grew 19% in the two-month period covering April and May, versus a year earlier, Grab said in a separate release on June 19. — Bloomberg

TEAMSTERS AT MAUSER FORCED TO STRIKE
Over 100 Chicago Workers on the Picket Lines as Strike Extends to L.A. and Minnesota CHICAGO, June 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — More than 100 Teamsters at Mauser Packaging Solutions in Chicago are on strike after the company failed to offer a fair contract. The warehouse workers, represented by Teamsters Local 705, are demanding higher wages, better benefits, and safer working conditions. 'Mauser is striking itself by refusing to put a serious offer on the table,' said Juan Campos, President of Local 705 and Teamsters International Vice President At-Large. 'Our members do essential work, and they deserve a contract that reflects their value. They are taking action to hold this greedy company accountable.' Mauser is a multinational packaging company that manufactures drums, cans, bottles, and intermediate bulk containers. The Teamsters represent hundreds of Mauser workers across the U.S. Local 705's strike in Chicago has already extended to Mauser locations in Los Angeles and Minnesota. 'All we're asking is for wages and benefits that let us support our families and keep up with the cost of living,' said Leon Garrett, a warehouse worker at Mauser's Chicago facility and a member of Local 705. 'We don't want to be on strike, but management left us no choice. This is about corporate greed, plain and simple.' This isn't the company's first attempt to undercut workers. In April, Mauser's subsidiary, Industrial Container Services (ICS), locked out Teamsters Local 117 members in Seattle in a blatant attempt to break the union during contract negotiations. The strike by Local 705 members in Chicago marks a major escalation in the fight against Mauser's anti-union playbook. 'Mauser tried to push us out instead of bargaining fairly,' said Brian Perfitt, a locked-out Teamster at ICS and member of Local 117. 'Now they're trying the same thing in Chicago — but they're not just fighting one group of Teamsters. They're up against the entire Teamsters Union.' 'Mauser is about to find out what it means to take on the Teamsters,' said Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division. 'We are bringing the full strength of this union to the fight. Our members will not be disrespected, and we will not back down.' Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.3 million hardworking people in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Visit for more information.
