National language must be core to country's development strategy

The Sun22-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has underscored the importance of upholding and advancing the national language as a fundamental pillar of Malaysia's national development agenda.
Speaking at the launch of the Public Bank-Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Language Prize today, Anwar cited global examples to stress that economic, technological and digital progress need not come at the expense of cultural and linguistic identity, but instead can coexist with strong cultural and linguistic roots.
'Take China, for example. Despite its technological and economic prowess, it continues to emphasise classical education in Chinese literature, such as the works of Mengzi, in schools. They want their children to maintain their cultural identity and not be swayed or mesmerised by foreign works that influence young minds and character.
'In Russia, despite its military and economic strength and a rapidly advancing education system, almost everyone I've met there seems familiar with the richness of Russian literature, such as the great works of Anna Akhmatova,' he said.
Also present were Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh, DBP Board of Governors chairman Datuk Dr Anwar Ridhwan, and Public Bank Berhad deputy chief executive officer Datuk Sulaiman Abdul Manap.
Anwar said that Malaysia needs to emulate these nations by making the national language a living part of its progress, not a rhetorical slogan, but a practical commitment backed by unified action across all sectors, including finance and private enterprise.
'In our pursuit of a MADANI nation, one that is progressive and globally competitive, we must ensure our financial institutions are strong and outward-looking. But in doing so, we must never lose sight of a vital component of nation-building, which is linguistic excellence and reverence for our literary heritage.
'It would be a grave mistake to assume that language and culture can be sidelined in the name of reform and progress. No great nation has ever abandoned these foundations,' Anwar asserted.
The Prime Minister also applauded the revival of the Language Prize, which was first introduced in 1984 but discontinued in 1998, as a timely move to reaffirm national values.
He also commended Public Bank's support for the initiative as a model for how the private sector can play a meaningful role in preserving and promoting national language, literature, and culture.
The Public Bank-DBP Language Prize spans five categories and celebrates high-quality works in the Malay language, produced by students from primary school to university level.

Ukrainian drones force suspension of Russian electronics factory

MOSCOW: Work at an electronics factory in Russia's Chuvashia region, some 600 kilometres east of Moscow, was briefly suspended on Monday after a Ukrainian drone attack, local officials said. Moscow said falling debris from intercepted drones fell on the facility, while Ukraine claimed a direct hit on the site. 'This morning, Ukrainian attempts to use drones in Chuvashia were detected,' regional governor Oleg Nikolayev wrote on Telegram. 'Two drones fell on the territory of the VNIIR factory,' said Nikolayev, adding that there were no casualties. The site is one of the main factories producing electronic components in Russia. Ukraine's General Staff said in a statement that it had targeted 'a military-industrial complex facility, where antennas for Shahed (drones) were manufactured'. Russia fires dozens of Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones at Ukrainian cities on a daily basis. Ukraine regularly launches retaliatory drone strikes in response to Moscow's aerial bombardments, which began with its full-scale offensive into Ukrainian territory more than three years ago. 'Strikes on the facilities that support the armed aggression of the Russian Federation will continue until it is completely stopped,' Ukraine's General Staff added. Governor Nikolayev said that the decision had been taken to 'temporarily suspend production to ensure the safety of employees'. Russia's defence ministry said it intercepted 49 Ukrainian drones overnight. Ukraine said it shot down 'dozens' of Russian drones over its western Rivne region. The massive Russian attack saw Ukraine's western neighbour Poland scramble fighter jets to secure its airspace, Warsaw's Operational Command said in a statement on social media.

Why target netizens over comments on PKR polls, says Rafizi

Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli claimed that the actions taken against the social media users were a form of intimidation. PETALING JAYA : Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli has questioned the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and police for taking action against several netizens who had commented on PKR's recently concluded party polls. Rafizi said he received numerous complaints from members of the public, who claimed they were being subject to various actions by the MCMC after posting comments on the PKR elections on social media. He said some of them were told that their content breached the law, while others were approached by MCMC and police officers for a 'meeting'. Some were also formally notified that they were under investigation and had their smartphones as well as SIM cards confiscated. Rafizi, who lost his PKR deputy presidency in last month's elections, claimed that most of the content under probe were simply people's personal views on the party polls, and did not breach any law. 'After going through these complaints, my view is that this is a form of intimidation to pressure the public so they would refrain from posting content on the PKR elections. 'I believe Prime Minister (and PKR president) Anwar Ibrahim and communications minister Fahmi Fadzil did not issue such an order. 'Perhaps there are certain characters, using the names of ministers, who ordered the MCMC or police to pressure the public, just because they had different views on the party elections,' he said in a statement. Rafizi, the Pandan PKR chief, urged the authorities to cease from carrying out any further action against the netizens involved. He said several lawyers have volunteered to represent the social media users pro bono to challenge the actions taken by the authorities. Rafizi had lost the PKR deputy president's post to Nurul Izzah Anwar last month, and later resigned as economy minister. He is currently on leave and will officially vacate his minister's post on June 17.
