Nepal to host ICC Women's T20 WC 2026 Qualifier
The tournament will feature 10 teams competing for four prized spots at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, which will be held in England and Wales.

The remaining five places in the Qualifier will be filled once regional competitions in Africa, Europe, and East Asia-Pacific conclude. Two teams each from Africa and Europe, and one from East Asia-Pacific will complete the 10-team lineup.
The format of the Qualifier will see the teams divided into two groups of five, followed by a Super Six stage and a Final. The top four teams at the end of the tournament will progress to the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 in England and Wales.
Nepal hosting a global women's cricket event marks a significant milestone for the development of the game in the region and is expected to generate fresh interest and support for women's cricket across South Asia.
Meanwhile, the 10th edition of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup will take place from June 12 to July 5, 2026, featuring 33 matches across 24 days. The tournament will be played at seven iconic venues in England and Wales, including Old Trafford, Headingley, Hampshire Bowl and Bristol County Ground.
The final will be staged at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground, offering a fitting climax to the biggest event in women's T20 cricket.

For now, the schedule for the sport is confirmed as well as venue, but the qualification pathways are yet to be announced. Speaking to BBC Test Match Special, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chair Richard Thompson gave a hint of how things are likely to pan out, and it is likely to leave a few of the top cricket-playing nations unhappy – potentially, Pakistan and New Zealand, according to a report in The Guardian. The idea is centered around having continental representation across the six teams – five teams from five continents. From Europe, the decision would be straightforward. As seen in hockey, a Team GB is all but a certainty. 'We are there by invitation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and you abide by their rules,' Thompson told BBC Test Match Special. 'It is still being finalised but the IOC's preference is to work to the five-ring principle, with teams from each of the continents – so Europe would be between Ireland and Great Britain. We would unite with Scotland and create Team GB. It would throw up the opportunity, if you took the principle that USA would play as the host country, and that would free up one additional slot for every other full country to have a play-off match to enable one of them to qualify.' According to an ESPNCricinfo report, the ICC will soon approve the continental qualification system. 'While the ICC's initial thinking was that it would shortlist the top six-ranked teams at a pre-determined cut-off date, several Full Member countries believed such an approach wouldn't allow for a wider representation of countries from across the globe,' the report stated. If USA does get their spot in the men's competition, that would mean a Caribbean nation, Asian powerhouses like Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and New Zealand (as part of Oceania from where Australia would make the cut) would all be competing for just one more spot. In April this year, the ICC had made an official press communication welcoming cricket's return to the Summer Games, which had only confirmed the venue and number of teams. 'ICC has welcomed the announcement of Fairgrounds in Pomona, Southern California, as the venue for cricket at the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (LA28). The cricket competition at LA28 will feature six teams each in the men's and women's competition as the sport makes a return to the Games after 128 years.' Cricket, which made its only appearance in the Olympics at the Paris Games in 1900, was included in the Los Angeles Olympics after an IOC meeting in Mumbai in October 2023. It joined five new sports at LA28 – baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash. One compound archery event was also added later on. The T20 format has also featured in other multi-sport events in recent years. The Asian Games in 2010, 2014 and 2023 featured both men's and women's T20 competitions while the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games staged a women's competition.

UAE to host Afghanistan and Pakistan in T20I tri-series ahead of Asia Cup
Dubai: UAE will host Pakistan and Afghanistan in a seven-match T20I Tri-Series at the historic Sharjah Cricket Stadium from August 29. The three teams will play each other twice in the six-match group stage. The top two teams will then compete in the final on September 7. Afghanistan will take on Pakistan in the tournament opener on August 29. Host UAE will open their campaign against Pakistan on August 30 followed by Afghanistan's clash against UAE on September 1 and their second group-stage match against Pakistan on September 2. Pakistan and UAE's second group-stage match will be played on September 4 followed by the Afghanistan-UAE match on September 5. The tournament will provide the ideal preparation opportunity to the three teams ahead of the eight-team ACC Asia Cup 2025 which will be played in the UAE from September 9. According to the ICC's Future Tours Programme, Pakistan were initially scheduled to host Afghanistan for a three-match T20I series during the window now taken up by the upcoming tri-series. Among the three participating teams, Pakistan are the highest-ranked in the ICC T20I rankings at No. 8, followed by Afghanistan at No. 9 and UAE at No. 14. Pakistan are currently playing a bilateral white-ball series against the West Indies, having won the opening game. Their Asia Cup campaign begins on September 12 against Oman. Afghanistan, who last played a T20I series in Zimbabwe at the end of the previous year, will open their Asia Cup campaign on September 9 against Hong Kong. Both Pakistan and Afghanistan have already secured direct qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan qualified by finishing among the top seven teams (excluding the hosts) in the last T20 World Cup, while Pakistan earned their spot based on their ICC ranking as of June 30, 2024 cut-off. UAE, however, are yet to confirm their place in the tournament and will need to go through the Asia-East Asia Pacific Qualifiers, scheduled in Oman from October 8 to 17.

LPL 2025 to be held in Colombo, Pallekele and Dambulla from November 27
Colombo: The 2025 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will run from November 27 to December 23, marking the tournament's sixth season. Matches will be held across three venues - Colombo, Pallekele and Dambulla. This will be the fourth time in six years that the LPL is being staged in the November-December window instead of its usual July-August slot. While the last two seasons were held during the mid-year period, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) opted for a later schedule this year, considering the 2026 T20 World Cup is set to begin in February, making the revised window more strategic. "The idea to conduct the LPL during this time frame is aimed at aligning the tournament with the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026," said Samantha Dodanwela, Tournament Director, LPL. The LPL, Sri Lanka's flagship domestic T20 tournament with an international appeal, serves as a dynamic platform for the country's top first-class cricketers to compete alongside and against international stars. Since the inaugural edition in 2020, the Lanka Premier League has been held annually and has become a vital fixture in Sri Lanka's cricketing calendar. Earlier this year, Sri Lanka Cricket terminated the contracts of Jaffna Kings - previously the longest-standing franchise since joining in the tournament's second edition - and Colombo Strikers, citing 'failure to uphold contractual obligations.' As a result, none of the current LPL franchises have ownership histories dating back beyond 2024. New owners for the Jaffna and Colombo teams are yet to be announced. Dodanwela also shared the board's intent to develop more batting-friendly pitches to help players adapt to conditions expected during the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Sri Lanka along with India. "We were quite happy with the wickets during the last edition, particularly in Dambulla and Kandy. We saw lots of high scores and even some centuries during that portion of the tournament. It was only in Colombo where batting was a little harder," Dodanwela noted. Supporting his comments, relaying work is currently underway on the pitches at the R. Premadasa Stadium. Several national players, including Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva, have also recently highlighted the need for surfaces that offer more support to batters.
