Dunamu, MB Bank to launch Vietnam's first crypto exchange
Dunamu, operator of South Korea's largest cryptocurrency platform Upbit, will join forces with Vietnam's state-controlled Military Bank to launch the Southeast Asian nation's first domestic digital asset exchange. The companies signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday at a business forum in Seoul attended by corporate leaders from both countries. 'The partnership is especially significant as Dunamu is exporting Korea's exchange model and technology as part of an overseas state-led initiative,' a company official said. Military Bank, or MB Bank, is a joint-stock commercial lender founded in 1994 as a subsidiary of the Ministry of National Defence. It ranks among Vietnam's five largest banks, serving 33 million customers with total assets nearing $50 billion. Under the deal, Dunamu will serve as MB Bank's key strategic partner, sharing its technology and infrastructure while advising on regulatory compliance, investor protection and talent development. The agreement comes as Vietnam moves to bring digital assets under formal oversight. In July, the Law on Digital Technology Industry was passed to legalize them and establish a regulated market. Dunamu has not only transformed Upbit into Korea's top exchange, but has helped shape Korea's broader crypto ecosystem and regulatory landscape, likely a key reason why the Vietnamese government tapped it as a partner. In July, Dunamu Vice Chair and co-founder Kim Hyoung-nyon met Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, pledging the company's commitment to cooperation in Vietnam's digital economy. Upbit is the world's third-largest crypto exchange, handling more than $1.1 trillion in trades and managing assets of over 15.3 trillion won ($11 billion). 'Vietnam has potential with more than 20 million virtual asset holders, over $800 billion in trading volume and the world's fifth-largest inflow of blockchain-based assets,' Dunamu CEO Oh Kyoung-suk said. 'When this growth potential meets the Upbit model, it will be a chance to build not just an exchange but Vietnam's entire digital financial infrastructure on a foundation of trust.' MB Bank Chair Luu Trung Thai added, 'MB and Upbit will work together as trusted partners to advance Vietnam's digital finance market.'

Webtoon to bring Disney titles to mobile platform
Platform to host 100 Marvel, 'Star Wars' titles as shares jump 28 percent on news Webtoon Entertainment, the US-based parent company of Naver Webtoon, struck a multiyear partnership with Walt Disney Co. to bring around 100 titles from Marvel, "Star Wars" and other Disney properties to its vertical-scrolling platform, the companies announced Wednesday. The partnership will release adaptations of existing comics for smartphone viewing as well as original content developed for the mobile format. The content will appear in a dedicated section of Webtoon's English-language app, Webtoon said. "Amazing Spider-Man" debuts this month, followed by "Avengers," "Star Wars" and other titles. Users can read initial episodes for free before purchasing additional chapters with in-app coins. The deal helps fill a major content gap for the Naver Corp.-backed company as it expands beyond Asian markets. The platform boasts 155 million monthly active users globally, but has lacked superhero titles — which Disney's Marvel catalog will now deliver in earnest. The platform's demographics skew younger and more female than traditional comics readers, and its popular titles lean toward fantasy, romance and slice-of-life genres. For Disney, the partnership marks a shift from Marvel Comics' traditional distribution through comic shops and download services that cater to older fans. The entertainment giant could tap into Webtoon's younger, mobile-first user base while opening new revenue streams for its extensive back catalog. "The Disney, Marvel, 20th Century and Star Wars brands are among the most legendary, creative and successful in the industry," said Yongsoo Kim, Webtoon's chief strategy officer. "We're bringing this legendary storytelling to a new generation of mobile-native comic fans." The announcement sent Webtoon shares up 28 percent in after-hours trading Tuesday, coinciding with second-quarter earnings announced the same day. Webtoon reported revenue rose 8.5 percent to $348.3 million, while net losses narrowed to $3.9 million from $76.6 million a year earlier. The company projects third-quarter revenue between $380 million and $390 million. Webtoon Entertainment went public on Nasdaq in June 2024. The US-listed company serves as the parent of Korea's Naver Webtoon following a May 2020 restructuring, with Naver Corp. maintaining majority control. The company reported 2024 revenue of $1.35 billion with a net loss of $152.9 million. Financial details of the partnership were not disclosed, but Disney's Daniel Fink, head of digital innovation, called it "one of the biggest" publishing partnerships his company has undertaken.

KEPCO signs MOU with Vietnam's PVN to foster workforce for nuclear power industry
The state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. said Wednesday it has signed an initial agreement with Vietnamese energy firm Petrovietnam to foster a workforce for Vietnam's nuclear power industry, as Seoul and Hanoi seek to expand industrial ties. Under a memorandum of understanding signed earlier this week, KEPCO will work to expand its foothold in Vietnam, which aims to operate four nuclear reactors by 2035, according to company officials. KEPCO noted this marks the first time PVN, the operator of Vietnam's Ninh Thuan 2 nuclear power plant, has signed an MOU with a foreign entity for cooperation in the nuclear energy sector. The MOU was signed following a summit between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Vietnam's top leader To Lam in Seoul. At the summit, the two leaders agreed to expand the countries' Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in trade, security, technology and other areas while pledging efforts to boost their bilateral trade volume to $150 billion by 2030. "With its world-class nuclear power project capabilities, KEPCO is the ideal partner for Vietnam to swiftly move forward with its nuclear power projects," KEPCO's President Kim Dong-cheol said, adding that his company will place top priority on nuclear cooperation with Vietnam.
