KUALA LUMPUR: MGB Berhad, the construction and property development arm of LBS Bina Group Bhd, has entered into a strategic Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) with Doka Formwork Malaysia Sdn Bhd to jointly develop innovative engineering solutions for projects using Industrialised Building System (IBS) precast concrete elements. Doka Formwork Malaysia, a subsidiary of global formwork and scaffolding leader Doka GmbH, brings expertise in optimised formwork systems, scaffolding solutions, engineering design, and technical support for cast-in-situ concrete—complementing MGB's strengths in IBS precast concrete, particularly for large-scale residential developments. Through the collaboration, both parties aim to enhance and integrate their respective technologies, combining formwork and scaffolding systems with on-site precast concrete components such as panels to streamline construction processes and improve efficiency. They will also explore new opportunities, align technical strategies, and implement forward-thinking construction solutions that deliver tangible performance improvements and long-term value. The MoC was formalised in the presence of key representatives from both companies, including MGB group executive chairman Tan Sri Ir. (Dr.) Lim Hock San, executive director and chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Lim Lit Chek, Doka GmbH CEO Robert Hauser, and Doka Malaysia country manager Teh Aun Kua. "By partnering with a global formwork leader like Doka, we are not only enhancing the quality and efficiency of our projects in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia but also reinforcing our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and international excellence. We believe this will lead to stronger project outcomes and long-term value for all stakeholders," Lim said in a statement. MGB noted that the partnership supports its ongoing efforts to digitise and optimise construction processes, which is in line with Malaysia's transition to a more modern and sustainable industry. The company's IBS technology has already helped reduce material wastage and improve resource control. In line with its ESG goals, MGB is also focused on upskilling its workforce—particularly in automation, design, and manufacturing—while continuing to lower its carbon footprint through sustainable practices.

Gobind lauds how AI transforms KL into smart city with traffic control, ‘digital twin', and urban safety tools

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 – Kuala Lumpur is rapidly transforming into an AI-powered metropolis, thanks to sweeping digitalisation efforts led by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), supported by the Ministry of Digital. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, during his visit to the Kuala Lumpur Command and Control Centre (KLCCC) today, praised the capital's strides in adopting artificial intelligence to enhance public services, improve safety, and raise overall quality of life. 'AI is helping modernise the city's infrastructure and services. It's not just about efficiency, it's about making KL a safer, more pleasant, and sustainable place to live,' Gobind said. The visit to KLCCC was part of the ministry's nationwide initiative to promote emerging technologies such as AI and 5G. Gobind was briefed on several AI-powered use cases already integrated into DBKL's operations, including traffic monitoring, city planning, and public safety. One of the key initiatives was DBKL's development of a comprehensive 'digital twin' of the city. This virtual replica enables real-time simulation and analysis of urban dynamics, supporting more effective planning, emergency response and resource management. Another key application is the city's AI-powered traffic management system, which leverages live camera feeds and intelligent analytics to monitor road conditions, detect accidents or illegal parking, and optimise traffic signal timing at congested intersections. 'AI and digital solutions should always serve people. Our goal is to build a city that is not only smarter, but also inclusive and responsive to everyone's needs,' she said. Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif also emphasised that while digital tools are crucial, the human element must remain central. Maimunah noted that the city's AI applications are already showing results easing traffic congestion, strengthening emergency response, and creating a more liveable urban experience. 'What is important for us is to see how we can bring together the existing powers in each state and with the desire to build a national smart nation centre. As I mentioned earlier, we are looking at a strategy for a smart nation in 2030. 'This means that we can bring together all the existing data and also see what technology is needed in the future and ensure that we are ready, not only in each state as it is now, but also in the whole of Malaysia,' said Maimunah.

Smart parking system adoption by Johor councils records positive results

JOHOR BARU: The adoption of a smart parking system by several local councils in Johor has led not only to better parking payment compliance by the public but also improved revenue collection by local authorities. State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Jafni Shukor said preliminary feedback from the councils showed that the digital shift has also given local authorities better monitoring over parking payments while easing the workload on enforcement teams. "Based on initial feedback, parking payment compliance has improved significantly. With real-time tracking, the council's respective enforcement teams - whose resources are often stretched thin — can now act faster and more efficiently," he told the New Straits Times. He said while several districts are still in the probation phase of using the digital parking system, the overall response has been positive, with measurable gains reported since the rollout began in stages last year. To date, the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP), Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu), Mersing District Council (MDM) and Tangkak District Council (MDT), Pontian District Council (MPPn) and Mersing District Council (MDMG) have digitalised their parking systems through the Parkmax@Johor platform, a mobile application that allows users to pay, reload, extend time, and settle compounds without physical coupons. The digital parking system also features a video-surveillance system, enhanced with AI capabilities to boost the efficiency of parking operations. The system, operated by Southmax Sdn Bhd, also provides councils with a steady revenue stream, under a 70:30 revenue-sharing model. Southmax Sdn Bhd is a subsidiary of ITMAX System Bhd, a leading integrated digital infrastructure service provider. MBIP began fully digitalising its parking system from Jan this year; MDM from May 1 this year, while MDT and MPKu began in Sept and Aug last year, respectively. Jafni said all 16 local authorities in Johor, including two city councils, eight municipal councils and six district councils, are expected to eventually transition fully to a digital parking system. "The delays are mainly due to ongoing contracts with existing operators, while some councils are still testing the system," he said. The Johor government is systematically implementing its SmartCity integration agenda by adopting technology-driven solutions to improve urban living, governance, and sustainability. Other components of Johor's SmartCity framework include smart LED streetlights, digital licensing, integrated traffic systems, real-time flood monitoring, and broadband infrastructure, particularly across Iskandar Malaysia.
