Detroit Red Wings legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Alex Delvecchio dies at 93
Delvecchio died at his home in Rochester, Michigan, according to a Red Wings spokesperson. A cause of death was not immediately available, though his family said in a statement released by the team that Delvecchio died peacefully Tuesday surrounded by loved ones.
'Alex was more than a hockey icon. He was a devoted husband, loving father, great grandfather, cherished friend and respected teammate to so many,' the family said. 'While the world knew him as an incredible hockey player with numerous accomplishments on the ice, we knew him as someone whose humility, strength, competitiveness, kindness and heart were even greater than his knew achievements.'
Delvecchio spent his entire NHL career with the Red Wings from 1951-73, recording 1,325 points in 1,671 regular-season and playoff games. Playing alongside 'Mr. Hockey' Gordie Howe, he was part of championship teams in 1952, '54 and '55, won the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct three times and was a two-time All-Star.
Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977, Delvecchio decades later was named one of the 100 greatest players in league history. During the '70s he had multiple stints as Detroit's general manager, head coach or both.
Delvecchio remains third in franchise history in games played behind Howe and Nicklas Lidstrom. His No. 10 hangs from the rafters as one of the storied organization's retired numbers.

Pivetta wins 9th game in career year for Padres, Machado has 3 RBIs in 6-4 win over Phillies
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Manny Machado hit a three-run double and Nick Pivetta allowed one run and struck out six in seven innings to lead the San Diego Padres past the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday. Pivetta (9-2) is off to the best start in his nine-year career, the first 3 1/2 spent with the Phillies. The 32-year-old entered nine games under .500 in his career and has never won more than 10 games. He went 6-12 in Boston last season but found success in San Diego and has kept the Padres in the thick of the NL wild-card race. Perhaps the lone dose of bad news came Tuesday, when the game was rained out which forced the day-night doubleheader. Pivetta, whose 195 career starts are seventh-most by a Canadian, had his scheduled start on Canada Day postponed. Kyle Schwarber took Pivetta deep in the sixth for his 26th homer, which made it 6-1. Machado had already done the bulk of the damage in a five-run second inning against Phillies rookie starter Mick Abel (2-2). Abel had loaded the bases when he issued consecutive walks to Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill to make it 2-0. Machado followed with his 21st double of the season. Abel, who struck out nine over six innings in his May big-league debut, walked five (four scored) and allowed five runs in 1 2/3 innings. Seeds keep tumbling at Wimbledon as No. 4 Paolini loses to Rakhimova in second round
LONDON (AP) — Last year's runner-up Jasmine Paolini became the fourth top-five seed to exit the women's bracket at Wimbledon, losing 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday to unseeded Kamilla Rakhimova in the second round. The fourth-seeded Paolini joins No. 2 Coco Gauff, No. 3 Jessica Pegula and No. 5 Zheng Qinwen in making a quick departure from the All England Club, with the other three having all lost in the first round. A total of 23 seeds — 13 men, 10 women — failed to get to the second round, equaling the highest total at any Grand Slam tournament since they began assigning 32 seeds in each singles bracket in 2001.
