Nigeria: Sokoto unveils $14mln 500-housing estate to tackle urban shelter deficit
In a landmark move to reduce the housing shortfall in Sokoto State, Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto on Tuesday laid the foundation for a ₦22 billion state-of-the-art housing estate comprising 500 modern residential units. The groundbreaking event, held at Wajake Village in Wamakko Local Government Area, signals a major step in the state government's commitment to expanding access to decent and affordable housing—particularly for civil servants and low-income earners. Governor Aliyu, who described the initiative as part of his administration's bold urban renewal agenda, revealed that the estate would consist of 300 units of three-bedroom flats and 200 units of four-bedroom flats, to be sold on an owner-occupier basis to ensure affordability. 'When we assumed office, Sokoto State did not have a single government-owned house. This project is a direct response to that reality. It reflects our dedication to improving the living conditions of our people,' the governor stated. The housing estate, strategically located near the Sokoto New City, is being developed in partnership with Teamwork Construction Company Nigeria Limited, with a targeted completion period of 12 months. Governor Aliyu also disclosed that the state government had completed 500 housing units at Gidan Salanke, a project originally started by former Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko. Additionally, the state acquired 130 housing units at Kwannawa from the Federal Ministry of Housing. 'This foundation is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents our administration's commitment to raising living standards through lasting, people-first development,' he added. The governor charged the contractors to uphold high construction standards and ensure timely delivery, stressing that the project must stand as a legacy of quality and efficiency. Gracing the event as special guest, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo praised Governor Aliyu's leadership and focus on human-centred development, describing the initiative as 'historic' and transformative. He also lauded the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, for his continued wisdom and guidance, which he said has been instrumental to the stability and progress of the region. The project forms a critical pillar in Sokoto's broader push for infrastructure and urban renewal, aimed at reshaping the state's socio-economic landscape for long-term prosperity. Fed's Powell heads to Senate panel for second day of testimony
U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell resumes two days of Congressional testimony on Wednesday when he appears before the Senate Banking committee after scrutiny before a House panel the day before that focused on the Fed's concerns the Trump administration's tariff plans will raise inflation. The Senate session begins at 10 a.m. with Powell expected to deliver the same message he presented to the House Financial Services Committee that even with recent inflation more moderate than expected, the central bank expects rising import taxes will lead to higher inflation beginning this summer. He is also expected to reiterate that the Fed won't be comfortable cutting interest rates until it sees if prices do begin to rise and whether that process shows signs of becoming more persistent. "We should start to see this over the summer, in the June number and the July we don't we are perfectly open to the idea that the pass-through (to consumers) will be less than we think, and if we do that will matter for policy," Powell said on Tuesday. 'I think if it turns out that inflation pressures remain contained we will get to a place where we cut rates sooner than later...I do not want to point to a particular meeting. I don't think we need to be in any rush," particularly given a still-strong labor market and so much uncertainty about the impact of the still-unresolved tariff debate. Tariffs have already risen on some goods, but there is a coming July 9 deadline for higher levies on a broad set of countries - with no certainty about whether the Trump administration will back down to a 10% baseline tariff that analysts are using as a minimum, or impose something more aggressive. The Fed has held its benchmark interest rate steady in the 4.25% to 4.5% range since December, despite demands by President Donald Trump for immediate, and deep, rate cuts. Economic projections released by the Fed last week showed policymakers at the median do anticipate reducing the benchmark overnight rate half a percentage point by the end of the year. But within those projections is a clear divide between officials who take the inflation risk more seriously -- 7 of 19 policy makers see no rate cuts at all this year -- and those who feel any tariff price shock will be less severe or quickly fade. Ten of the 19 see 2 or more rate reductions. Investors currently expect the Fed to cut rates at its September and December meetings, but hold rates steady at its next meeting on July 29-30. Nigeria: Gombe gov reiterates commitment to sustainable economic reforms
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has reiterated the commitment of his administration to sustainable economic reforms and infrastructure development. The Governor made the assertion when the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) held a sub-national stakeholders' engagement session and a statewide Town Hall Meeting in Gombe State, aimed at assessing the state's performance on business-enabling reforms and strengthening alignment with national economic initiatives. The session, which brought together key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, was designed to deepen the implementation of the State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER) and promote inclusive growth through improved regulatory environments at the state level. Inuwa Yahaya, represented by the Commissioner for Finance, Muhammad Gambo Magaji, described the engagement as both timely and strategic. He emphasized that the recognition of Gombe as the top-ranking state in Nigeria for Ease of Doing Business is the result of intentional policies, strong political will, and robust administrative reforms. According to him, 'Our administration has streamlined business registration processes, reduced bureaucratic bottlenecks, digitized land administration systems, and introduced investor-friendly tax policies.' The Governor added that, 'We have also maintained a stable macroeconomic environment with consistent policies that inspire investor confidence, reinforced by the rule of law, low crime rates, and a pro-business regulatory framework.' Inuwa Yahaya further highlighted key infrastructure projects including the Special Agro-Processing and Export Free Zone, the Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park, and the ultra-modern livestock development zone, as milestones of his administration's drive to create an enabling environment for investment and economic diversification. Delivering her remarks, the Director General of PEBEC, Princess Zahra Mustapha Audu, commended Gombe State for its outstanding performance in business reforms. 'Gombe has consistently set the pace as a shining example of sub-national reform success,' she noted. According to her, 'Being ranked number one in PEBEC's Ease of Doing Business survey for two consecutive years underscores the state's commitment to reform-driven governance.' In his welcome address, the State Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Tourism, Nasiru Mohammed Aliyu, praised PEBEC for its efforts in strengthening Nigeria's economic competitiveness, especially at the sub-national level. He reaffirmed the state's alignment with the national agenda for a business-friendly environment that promotes innovation, productivity, and inclusive growth. Gombe State Government, under the leadership of Governor Inuwa Yahaya, believes it has done more than enough to earn the position of best state in Ease of Doing Business again. And the numbers tell a convincing story. Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has jumped from below N1 billion in 2019 to over N28 billion today. The state attracts more than $100 million in foreign direct investment annually. More than 1.5 million residents are engaged in skilled and unskilled labour, thanks to a growing private sector. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) estimates the state's GDP at $55.5 billion, with investment returns of over 20 percent, particularly in agriculture, renewable energy, and light industry. Much of this progress, state officials say, is the result of deliberate reforms and focused leadership. Processes for registering businesses have been simplified. Land administration has been digitised. The state has also introduced tax policies that are friendly to investors, especially small and medium enterprises. The Gombe administration has also placed a premium on infrastructure development. The Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park has become a magnet for investment. A seed company recently commissioned there by former President Olusegun Obasanjo stands as evidence that Gombe is now firmly on the map for serious business ventures. Other major projects such as the Special Agro-Processing and Export Free Zone and the International Grains Market have further boosted investor confidence.
