'Unprecedented' spate of violent crime and police shortages hit Northland

An "unprecedented" spate of violent crimes coupled with a significant police shortage in Northland means dozens of officers are being sent to the region on rotations to help out. The special staff operation has been running for three months, with about 30 police from other districts being re-deployed to Northland for five weeks at a time to plug the gaps, with no end date in sight. District Commander for Northland, Superintendent Matt Srjoj spoke to Lisa Owen.

Emergency services were called to the assault on Joy Street in the suburb of Shirley at 3.25pm after reports of an assault. A police spokesperson said a person reportedly received serious injuries and has been transported to hospital. "The alleged offenders fled the scene and police are currently responding," the spokesperson said. Gloriavale leader Howard Temple resigns as Overseeing Shepherd

Howard Temple Photo: The Press/Kai Schwoerer Gloriavale leader Howard Temple has resigned as Overseeing Shepherd after being convicted of sexual offending against girls and women at the West Coast Christian community. The 85-year-old has been replaced by Stephen Standfast. Temple pleaded guilty to 12 charges, including five of indecent assault, just days into a judge-alone trial in Greymouth last month. He is on bail ahead of his sentencing. Temple became Overseeing Shepherd in 2018 after the death of the community's founder Hopeful Christian.
