Kent motor racing circuit given green light to expand

BBC News6 days ago
A motor racing circuit in Kent has been granted planning permission to expand its operation.Buckmore Park in Chatham has been given the go-ahead to create The Paddock, a new motorsport-themed centre, on a disused section of its karting circuit. The owners can now progress their plans to invest in a new 20,000 sq ft (1,850 sq m) building with state-of-the-art simulator room, a restaurant and bar, and a viewing terrace overlooking the circuit.Managing director Phil Ling said: "We've got a lot of potential as a venue here. We host many karting championships and in the area the people who enjoy motorsport want somewhere to go and socialise to be even more involved in the sport."
With Formula One celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, Buckmore Park can lay claim to launching the careers of many motor racing drivers.Sir Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Lando Norris have all competed at the Kent karting circuit.Buckmore Park began its Driver Development programme last August with the aim of taking young driving talent to the next level, covering one-on-one coaching, mechanics and finance."We're in the early stages but one of the participants has gone on to do further work experience with us which shows the many facets of the industry," Mr Ling added. The Paddock is scheduled to open in 2027 with extra team briefing areas built within the hospitality and driver development venue.

Wimbledon 2025 LIVE RESULTS: Iga Swiatek THRASHES Amanda Anisimova to claim women's singles title

WIMBLEDON 2025 is heading for a thrilling final day after a stunning fortnight at SW19. On Saturday, a new women's singles champion was crowned as Iga Swiatek thrashed Amanda Anisimova in straight sets. The Polish superstar didn't drop one game during the final as she claimed the title for the first time in SW19 with a 6-0 6-0 victory - the first whitewash win in the women's singles at Wimbledon for 114 years. The men's doubles saw two Brits triumph after Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool secured a straight sets win over Rinky Hijikata and David Pel. Tomorrow will see Carlos Alcaraz defend his crown, and look for a third successive title, as he takes on World No1 Jannik Sinner in the men's singles final, just five weeks after their French Open classic. 7th Jul 2025, 08:58 By Connor Greaves Norrie the final Brit left standing Cameron Norrie struggled into the Wimbledon quarter finals after a four-hour, five-set slogfest that saw his opponent Nicolas Jarry go on a TOPLESS rant to the umpire then square up to Norrie at the end. Norrie, 29, beat towering Chilean qualifier Jarry 6-3 7-6 6-7 6-7 6-3 on Court One in four hours and 27 minutes to remain the only male Brit still in the competition. It was the longest match of Norrie's professional career, and just the fifth time he had played in a contest that lasted over four hours, celebrating by lying on the floor with his tongue out. The South African-born player also became just the fourth British man in the Open Era to reach the last eight at Wimbledon on multiple occasions, joining the likes of Andy Murray, Tim Henman and Roger Taylor. Winning his ninth match in ten No1 Court outings, Norrie now has the chance to match his best run at SW19 after reaching the semis in 2022. Norrie will face an incredibly difficult task to reach the last 4 with his quarter-final opponent none other than reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz. 7th Jul 2025, 08:48 By Connor Greaves Order of Play on Courts 1 & 2 No. 1 Court - From 1pm Ekaterina Alexandrova [18] vs Belinda Bencic (SUI) Benjamin Shelton (USA) [10] vs Lorenzo Sonego (ITA) Iga Swiatek (POL) [8] vs Clara Tauson (DEN) [23] No. 2 Court - From 11am Marin Cilic (CRO) vs Flavio Cobolli (ITA) [22] Liudmila Samsonova [19] vs Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (ESP) 7th Jul 2025, 08:42 By Connor Greaves Order of Play on Centre Court Centre Court - From 1.30pm Alex de Minaur (AUS) [11] vs Novak Djokovic (SRB) [6] Mirra Andreeva [7] vs Emma Navarro (USA) [10] Jannik Sinner (ITA) [1] vs Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) [19] By Connor Greaves Good morning and welcome to SunSport's live blog of Wimbledon! SHAKUR STEVENSON is in action against William Zependa NOW ahead of a huge fight between Edgar Berlanga and Hamzah Sheeraz! WBC lightweight champ Shakur Stevenson is defending his belt against Zepeda in what is a massive clash in a stacked division. Brit Sheeraz, 26, is yet to taste defeat - but his most recent fight ended in disappointment after a controversial draw with WBC middleweight champion Carlos Adames cost him the belt. Meanwhile, battling Berlanga recently bounced back from his 2024 Canelo Alvarez loss in emphatic fashion by knocking out Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in the first round. 12th Jul 2025, 23:52 By Tom Sheen Up next - David Morrell vs Iman Khataev We've got a very decent light-heavyweight clash coming up next. This is expected to be a cracker with both men ranked inside the top 10 by The Ring Magazine. Cuban Morrell (11-1, 9KOs) is the slight favourite over the undefeated Chechnyan, who now fights out of Australia (10-0, 9KOs). With those KO numbers we are expecting an absolute cracker. Both men are in the ring now and we should be underway very shortly. 12th Jul 2025, 23:45 By Connor Greaves Berlanga's last five Berlanga bounced back from his defeat to Canelo Alvarez with a win over Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz last time out. That was a beautiful display of boxing by hard-hitting Japanese starlet Reito Tsutsumi! In just his second pro fight, the lightweight got rid of Ruiz out of there in the second round. He fired in a series of absolutely brutal body shots. Ruiz was down twice in the first round but managed to survive the bell, but didn't last much longer as the fight went into the second round. Robots are taking grad jobs. Do we give up or use our brains?

W hat do you get when you cross an overeducated population with an absence of high-quality jobs? This is, perhaps, the setup to history's least funny joke. But the punchline is important, perhaps world-changingly so. We are about to find out what it is. This year the number of graduate jobs advertised by employers has gone down 33 per cent. AI is to blame, naturally. Robots are doing the grunt work that previously fell to capitalism's least pitied whipping boys: recent history graduates who dream of accountancy qualifications and an annual holiday in Santorini. As a result we can expect to see a bunch of smart, overeducated youngsters wandering about with nothing to do. In a way, this is an acceleration of something that was already happening. According to the most recent figures from the Office for National Statistics I can find, in 2017, 31 per cent of graduates were in jobs for which they were overeducated. We will now look back on them as the lucky ones. AI is about to make the problem so much worse.
