Lancashire's James Anderson back in the wickets as he returns to action
England great James Anderson took his first wicket of the summer on his county return for Lancashire as they assumed control over Derbyshire on day two of their Second Division clash.
The 42-year-old is making his first competitive outing since his farewell international appearance against the West Indies last June and dismissed Caleb Jewell with his 18th delivery to get back amongst the wickets.
Anderson signed a new one-year deal with the Red Rose earlier this year but was absent from the first five games of their campaign after he suffered a calf injury – though it did not take long for Anderson to get back into his groove.

After Lancashire posted 408 all out before tea, a cheer rang around from those inside Old Trafford after the break when his name was announced to open the bowling at the James Anderson End.
The country's record wicket-taker endured a tough return to the crease initially after he was driven for three boundaries in his third over, but he came around the wicket and clipped the top of off stump for his opening scalp of 2025.

Anderson stars but Northants stay unbeaten in Blast
James Anderson delivered a second three-wicket haul of his T20 Blast return for Lancashire but it was not enough to stop Northants Steelbacks making it five wins from five to tighten their grip on the top of North Group. The veteran seamer's 3-31 at a blustery Old Trafford backed up his 3-17 against Durham at Chester-le-Street. Advertisement But the 42-year-old's sterling efforts could not prevent the Steelbacks totalling 180-6 before restricting Lancashire to 156-9 in reply. Liam Livingstone's return to Lightning colours following his IPL victory with Royal Challengers Bangalore saw him take 2-35 and add 18 with the bat as Northants always had the game under their control. George Scrimshaw was the pick of their bowlers with an impressive 4-19. Match scorecards North Group – Malan fireworks & Ali hat-trick Yorkshire climbed off the bottom of the North Group table after posting a first victory of their T20 Blast campaign, beating Leicestershire Foxes by a thumping margin of 106 runs. Advertisement Dawid Malan (88 from 48 balls) and Will Luxton (62 from 34) put on 132 for the second wicket and, despite a mini-collapse which saw five wickets go for 31 runs, Yorkshire posted a towering total of 213-7 in their 20 overs. Former England batter Malan passed 10,000 T20 runs in the process. The Foxes were never really in the hunt with spin doing the damage, Jafer Chohan taking 4-27 and Dom Bess 2-25. Victory moved Yorkshire into seventh place in the table with their first win at the fourth attempt. Advertisement A half-century from New Zealand opener Tom Latham (58 from 42 balls) helped put Bears in a commanding position at the halfway mark after posting 199-6. Fynn Hudson-Prentice marked his Derbyshire return with a wicket after signing a four-match loan deal from Sussex and Pat Brown was the pick with the ball for the visitors with 3-40. But both ended on the losing side as a chase of 200 proved beyond them after a disastrous start which saw them 1-2 after the first seven deliveries and they were bowled out for 141. Pakistan seamer Ali dismissed Ross Whiteley, Alex Thomson and Ben Aitchison in the 16th over for his hat-trick to claim Bears' best-ever bowling figures in the T20 Blast. South Group – Spitfires overpower Hampshire Hawks England opener Zak Crawley starred as Hampshire Hawks had their winning streak brought to an abrupt halt at the hands of Kent Spitfires who chased down a target of 178 to win by eight wickets. Advertisement Tom Rogers (3-33) gave Kent a lightning start with the ball helping to reduce Hampshire to 29-3 but Joe Weatherley's 63 from 46 balls and contributions lower down the order from Dewald Brevis (24), James Fuller (27) and Benny Howell (23) helped the visitors to 177-7. But after Daniel Bell-Drummond (61) and Kent skipper Crawley (75 not out from 43 balls) shared a superb 110 run partnership for the second wicket, those defences were never enough. Defeat for Hampshire was not enough to dislodge them from the top of the south group table after four rounds of action with James Vince's side on 12 points. Tom Helm continued his remarkably consistent Blast campaign as Middlesex finally got their South Group campaign off the ground with a six wicket win over Essex at Chelmsford. Advertisement The Middlesex seamer posted 4-32 from his four overs as the home side were restricted to 156-9, Simon Harmer's 28-ball 41 lifting them after a disappointing batting display. Helm's contribution followed up his 3-29 and 3-29 in his previous two games against Kent and Glamorgan. The result was never in much doubt after Middlesex skipper Stephen Eskinazi (72) and Kane Williamson (31) put on 97 for the first wicket. Middlesex's victory, their first of the season at the fourth attempt, left Essex still looking for a first win after four attempts and rooted to the bottom of the table. At Hove James Coles continued his outstanding form with the bat and Nathan McAndrew dismantled Glamorgan with the ball as Sussex Sharks downed the Welsh side. Advertisement Coles is averaging 98 in the Blast after four innings and his innings of 75 not out was the high point of an excellent display from the hosts with the bat. Tom Alsop also reached a half-century in 27 balls with five sixes as Sussex posted 195-4. McAndrew then set about Glamorgan with the ball taking 5-19 in his four overs as Sussex won by 78 runs. Victory was secured with two wickets in two balls for Tymal Mills as the Sussex captain became the fifth player to reach 300 T20 wickets. It put his side second with three wins from four and level on 12 points with leaders Hampshire and third-placed Somerset. Hasan Ali takes hat-trick and James Anderson also among Vitality Blast wickets
Hasan Ali claimed a hat-trick – and six wickets in just 3.1 overs – as Birmingham Bears wrapped up a 58-run success over bottom side Derbyshire in the North Group of the Vitality Blast. Bears openers Tom Latham and Alex Davies posted 58 and 49 respectively in a total of 199 for six at Edgbaston. Advertisement Pakistan bowler Ali then played a starring role in limiting the winless away side to 141 all out, including removing Ross Whiteley for 50 and Alex Thomson and Ben Aitchison for golden ducks on successive deliveries in the 16th over. James Anderson took three wickets but could not prevent Lancashire slipping to a 24-run defeat to table-topping Northamptonshire. The 42-year-old former England seamer dismissed openers Ricardo Vasconcelos and Matthew Breetzke, plus Ravi Bopara, as the visitors made 180 for six at Old Trafford en route to maintaining their 100 per cent record with a fifth consecutive victory. Advertisement Lancashire, who remain second, were restricted to 156 for nine in response, with George Scrimshaw taking four for 19 for the Steelbacks. Yorkshire captain Dawid Malan became the fifth English batter to reach 10,000 career T20 runs during a superb 88 which helped his side achieve a first win of the campaign at the expense of Leicestershire. Aided by 62 from second-wicket partner Will Luxton, former England left-hander Malan contributed significantly to an imposing target of 214, which was never threatened by the third-placed Foxes, who were bowled out for 107 inside 17 overs, with leg-spinner Jafer Chohan claiming four for 27. Advertisement In the South Group, England batter Zak Crawley hit an unbeaten 75 off 43 balls as Kent inflicted a first defeat of the season on leaders Hampshire. Crawley, who shared a stand of 110 with Daniel Bell-Drummond (61) in Canterbury, helped the Spitfires to an eight-wicket win with six balls remaining after Joe Weatherley registered 63 not out in the Hawks' total of 177 for seven. Sussex eased to a 78-run triumph over Glamorgan thanks to Nathan McAndrew's five-for after James Coles made an unbeaten 78 and fellow batter Tom Alsop hit 50. The visitors were set a target of 196 at Hove but were dismissed for 117 in the 16th over following McAndrew's heroics with the ball. Advertisement Pointless Essex remain rooted to the bottom after 72 from Stephen Eskinazi helped Middlesex to a six-wicket win and first success of the campaign. The hosts lost six wickets in 29 balls at Chelmsford before Middlesex chased down a total of 156 for nine with 15 balls to spare. Surrey continue to set the pace in the women's competition after Danni Wyatt-Hodge's blistering 26-ball half-century paved the way for a nine-wicket win over Durham at the Oval. The England opener struck two sixes and 11 fours in an unbeaten knock of 74 during a first-wicket stand of 94 with captain Bryony Smith (44) as the hosts chased down a target of 142 with 43 balls to spare. In Sunday's other match, Tara Norris made an unbeaten 33 and took three for 25 to help Lancashire defeat Birmingham Bears by five runs.

Derbyshire re-sign Hudson-Prentice for T20 Blast
Derbyshire have re-signed all-rounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice from Sussex on an initial four-match T20 Blast loan deal. The 29-year-old, who was not involved in Sussex's first three games in this season's competition, has taken 33 wickets and scored 548 runs in 51 T20 appearances during his career. Advertisement He was a member of the Derbyshire squad which reached Finals Day in 2019 and spent three years at the County Ground before moving to the south coast. The Falcons needed extra options because Zak Chappell (hip) and Harry Moore (back) are sidelined by injury. The signing of Hudson-Prentice was completed in time for Sunday's North group away game against Bears.
