News18a day ago
23 athletes backed by Reliance Foundation will compete at the World University Games in Germany until July 27th.
A contingent of 23 athletes supported by the Reliance Foundation is set to compete at the World University Games across six cities in Germany, with events running until July 27th. Representing athletics, archery, and judo, these young talents aim to improve international rankings, achieve personal bests, and bring home laurels.
The athletics team forms the backbone of the foundation's campaign, with 18 athletes competing in sprints, jumps, throws, hurdles, relay, long jump, decathlon, and other events, beginning July 21st.
James Hillier, Director of Athletics at Reliance Foundation, emphasised the importance of the World University Games, stating, 'The World University Games is a very important competition for us. It is one of the few opportunities that athletes get to compete in a multi-sport environment. Athletes from different disciplines get to interact with each other and get the best out of their counterparts, which is a big benefit for them."
Discussing the expectations for RF athletes, Hillier noted, 'The starting point is for all our athletes to finish ahead of their current ranking. We expect that because we pride ourselves on preparing our athletes better than anybody else – so it is not about who is the best athlete but who is the best-prepared athlete."
Animesh Kujur will aim to elevate his performance in the 200m after his recent outings, including his participation in the Meeting Herculis EBS (Monaco Diamond League) in the U23 200m event, as part of his European tour. Similarly, the all-Reliance Foundation relay team comprising Animesh Kujur, Manikanta Hoblidhar, Gurindervir Singh, DM Jayaram, and Lalu Prasad Bhoi will blend camaraderie and capability to reaffirm Reliance Foundation's mission of preparing a world-class relay team.
Moumita Mondal achieved a new personal best of 13.24s in the 100m hurdles earlier this month, making her the fourth best in India ever. She will also compete against her RF training partner Ancy Sojan in the long jump, who boasts a personal best of 6.71m. They will look to bring the best out of each other at the World University Games.
Quiet Firepower in Archery & Judo: As part of the Reliance Foundation Scholarship Program, the Foundation supports promising athletes in archery and judo who will compete in these tournaments.
In Judo?
Himanshi Tokas (Below 63kg) – A gold medallist at the Jr. Asian Cup 2025 in Taipei, Himanshi aims to continue her winning streak on the university stage.

This is how the World no.1 Chess player, Magnus Carlsen prepares for his games in Freestyle Chess Las Vegas!Magnus will face Hikaru Nakamura today in the battle for 3rd place. — ChessBase India (@ChessbaseIndia) July 20, 2025 On Sunday, Carlsen got the better of Arjun Erigaisi and Praggnanandha to secure his place in the game to determine the third-place. Hans Moke Niemann will face his American counterpart Levon Aronian in the finals, while Carlsen is set to compete against the world number two, American Hikaru Nakamura, for third place in the USD 750,000 prize money event. Carlsen's journey was marked by two eventful matches after being denied a chance to win the event by Praggnanadhaa. The Indian player began with another victory against the world's best in the first game of their mini-match. Carlsen struck back in the return game and won the subsequent set of games to stay in the event. In his next match, Arjun initially enjoyed some opening advantage in the first game but couldn't maintain it, while Carlsen proved superior in the second game once again. On the final day, Arjun will face Fabiano Caruana of the United States for the fifth-place play-off, while Praggnanandhaa will compete for the seventh place against another American, Wesley So. Nakamura admitted he was fortunate, winning 1.5-0.5 against Wesley So, and then defeating Fabiano Caruana 3-1 in a match with fluctuating fortunes. All eyes will be on Niemann, the lowest-ranked player in the last-8 stage, as he fights for the USD 200,000 prize against comeback king Aronian. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Shahid Afridi Breaks Silence After India Withdraw From Pakistan Match In WCL

Last Updated: Shahid Afridi has requested politics-free cricket as Pakistan plays in England in the World Championship of Legends. Former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi has said that all teams have come to England to play cricket, and he would reiterate that politics should be kept away from sport, with a player being a good ambassador for cricket and not an embarrassment for the country. The Pakistan team boasts a roster that includes skipper Afridi, Younis Khan, Sohail Tanvir, Wahab Riaz and Kamran Akmal, among a host of yesteryear cricketers. The organisers of the World Championship of Legends apologised for causing discomfort to Indian legends. India and Pakistan were supposed to play a game in the tournament on Sunday, July 20. Still, after a massive social media backlash targeting Indian players for playing against Pakistan, two months after the Pahalgam attack, the organisers called off the match. 'We are here to play cricket and I've always said that cricket should be kept away from politics; it should move forward. A player should be a good ambassador, not a source of embarrassment for their country," Afridi said while speaking to the media. 'We've come here to play cricket. If India didn't want to play against Pakistan, they should've refused before coming here. But now you've arrived, even held practice sessions and then suddenly changed everything in a single day," Afridi added. 'All the remaining matches are taking place. The tournament is proceeding as scheduled, with no changes. As for the semifinals and final, we're currently saying that if we make it to the semifinals, there will be four teams and we will avoid matches between the two teams," Kamil said. 'If we reach the final, then the decisions regarding that will be made then. And as for this match, the two points will be awarded to us and we deserve those points as per the rules," Kamil added. Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan shared a statement on X as well, announcing his stand not to participate in the game against Pakistan. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Liverpool Hit Five Past Stoke Behind Closed-Doors As Darwin Nunez NetsTreble

Last Updated: Nunez struck three times inside the opening 20 minutes of the contest, while Rio Ngumoha and Federico Chiesa added a goal each on either side of half-time to pick up a 5-0 triumph. Premier League champions Liverpool registered a 5-0 victory over Stoke City in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Sunday at the AXA Training Centre. Darwin Nunez turned out to be the star on the day as the Uruguayan netted three times inside the opening 20 minutes of the contest with the Championship outfit, while Rio Ngumoha and Federico Chiesa added their names to the scoresheet on either side of half-time. The victory was the Reds' second in as many games before jetting off to Asia for their pre-season tour. Nunez initiated the scoring in the sixth minute with an instinctive follow-up strike after Florian Wirtz's attempted through-ball for Dominik Szoboszlai was only partially cleared. He found the net again six minutes later, finishing off Szoboszlai's low cross from the right at the end of a well-orchestrated move. Nunez completed his hat-trick within 14 minutes of the first half by nudging home Curtis Jones' delivery inside the box. The hosts extended their lead to four midway through the first half when Ngumoha received the ball in the area, cut inside, and watched his deflected shot loop into the net. Closer to the break, Jones, who had surged forward to meet Andy Robertson's pass from the left flank, was unable to add a fifth, side-footing straight at goalkeeper Viktor Johansson. Liverpool fielded an entirely different outfield team for the second half. Early on, Ben Doak was frustrated by the post, having pounced on the rebound from a Chiesa shot that had been parried. Cody Gakpo, Chiesa, and Doak tested goalkeeper Jack Bonham in quick succession, before Armin Pecsi was called into action at the other end to keep out Tatsuki Seko's header. Wataru Endo narrowly missed the target with his headed effort from a Gakpo corner, and Luca Stephenson fired over from Jeremie Frimpong's cut-back. The Reds finally scored their fifth goal two minutes before the end of the 90 minutes. Gakpo was found at the back post by Frimpong and unselfishly squared the ball to Chiesa for a simple finish. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
