US regulators probe over 137,000 Kia vehicles after complaints of ineffective recall remedy

New York Post4 days ago
US regulators on Friday opened an investigation into more than 137,000 Kia vehicles to evaluate how effective a recall remedy was for defective oil piston rings.
Kia in February launched a recall of 137,256 vehicles, including 2021-2023 Seltos and Soul models, over concerns the piston oil rings might have been incorrectly manufactured.
Defective piston oil rings could damage the engine over time and increase the risk of a fire.
US regulators opened an investigation into more than 130,000 Kia vehicles and the carmaker's recall remedy.

In April, the carmaker made available a recall remedy that included inspecting the vehicle to see whether an engine replacement was necessary.
But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it reviewed 47 complaints that alleged the recall remedy was ineffective or unavailable.
The audit will investigate Kia's remedy measures as flagged in the complaints, which were received between April to June of this year.

Ford recalls more than 103,000 vehicles over axle bolt issue

Ford Motor is recalling more than 103,000 F-150 pickup trucks over an issue with the vehicles' axle hub bolts that can cause the vehicle to roll away when the parking brake is not applied or cause a loss of driver power. "Both of these conditions can increase the risk of a crash," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in its recall notice on Tuesday. Ford did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Axle hub bolts keep wheel hubs attached to the vehicle's axle, which is the rod or shaft that connects a vehicle's wheels to the drivetrain and supports its weight. The regulatory agency, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, said that the rear axle hub bolt may "fatigue and break," which could damage the axle hub splines and ultimately compromise the safety of the vehicle. One indication of a faulty axle hub bolt is a clicking noise, according to NHTSA's report. "If the bolt breaks, customers may report a rattle noise," the agency said. The recall affects certain F-150 trucks produced between Jan. 2, 2023, and May 21, 2025. The highway administration said owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail between Aug. 18 and May 22, 2026 and that they can take their F-150 to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the rear axle shaft assemblies replaced free of charge. The recall number is 25S82. More than two years ago, Ford recalled over 100,000 F-150 pickup trucks over a similar issue with vehicles' rear axle hub bolt. Tuesday's recall notice came a day after Ford announced it would launch a new electric pickup truck in 2027 that will start at $30,000.

Ford recalls over 103,000 US vehicles over damaged axle bolts, NHTSA says

(Reuters) -Ford is recalling more than 103,000 F-150 pickup trucks in the U.S. over axle bolts that may break and result in vehicle rollaways or a loss of drive power, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Tuesday. A broken axle bolt can damage axle hub splines - components that transfer power from the axle to the wheels and help them rotate. Damaged splines can cause vehicles to roll away when in park without the parking brake engaged or result in a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash, the U.S. auto safety authority said. The report said that if the rear axle bolt becomes loose, customers may report a clicking noise. If the bolt breaks, they may hear a rattling noise. As a remedy, dealers will replace the rear axle shaft assemblies, free of charge. The recall affects Ford's F-150 models between 2023 and 2025. NHTSA estimates about 1% of the vehicles have the defect.
