Researchers make alarming discovery while studying world's largest wild goat: 'Serious concerns'
As livestock grazing spreads deeper into the alpine zones of the Kashmir region, the already-threatened Kashmir markhor is running out of space and options, according to recent reporting. Scientists say the species may be getting pushed into lower, less nutritious habitats at a critical time in their life cycle.
As detailed by Mongabay, markhor usually migrate to higher elevations in May and June to give birth and graze on nutritious alpine plants. But this timing now overlaps with a major influx of livestock — mostly sheep and goats — brought in by local herders.
Researchers found that livestock outnumber markhor by more than 30 to 1 during this critical period, pushing them into lower, less suitable areas.
That shift may be hurting young markhors. In one heavily grazed valley, researchers found far fewer yearlings compared with adult females — a sign that fewer kids are surviving their first year.
"This research raises serious concerns for markhor conservation in the region," said Tawqir Bashir, an assistant professor at Sher-e-Kashmir University, per Mongabay. "The severe competition with livestock for space and resources in summer, combined with the disturbance by herders and herding dogs, will affect their migration patterns as well."
According to Mongabay, there are only two viable markhor populations in India, in the Pir Panjal and Kazinag ranges. The subspecies is legally protected and classified as "near threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Forced into less than optimal habitats — especially after giving birth — females may struggle to recover body weight and provide for their young, increasing their vulnerability heading into harsh winters.
Markhor aren't the only hooved wildlife impacted, either, according to Mongabay. This may indicate a collapse of biodiversity, which could create ripple effects that impact the livelihoods of locals by resulting in habitat degradation and lost tourism income.
While the study raises red flags, it also points toward solutions. The researchers recommend protecting fawning sites and regulating livestock access in key areas during summer months.

"The study provides a sustainable and ecologically sound solution to address this issue by recommending regulation of livestock," Mongabay wrote when paraphrasing Bashir.
Programs like the Kashmir Markhor Recovery Project, launched in 2004, have helped stabilize populations before. Rotational grazing — adopted in parts of India and Kenya — shows how people and wildlife can share the land more sustainably.

It's the height of summer, and for many Americans, that means scorching cars and forgotten plastic water bottles rolling around under the seats. But before you take a sip out of one of those, you might want to think twice, experts say. High temperatures and prolonged sun exposure can create conditions that lead to both chemical leaching from plastic bottles and bacterial growth, especially if the bottle has already been opened. Experts warn this dual threat could pose a risk to your health. "The combination of microbial growth and chemical leaching from the plastic makes it a double-edged sword," said Dr. Paul Savage, a toxin expert and chief medical officer at MDLifespan in Chicago. Many single-use plastic water bottles are made from a type of plastic called polyethylene terephthalate (PET). When PET-containing bottles sit in the heat, the polymer chains in the plastic can start to break down and cause the release of various chemicals, including trace amounts of phenol, like bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, into the water. "Phenols and phthalates are endocrine disruptors, meaning they interfere with the natural hormones in our body," said Nicole Deziel, an environmental epidemiologist at the Yale School of Public Health. Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated that the current levels of BPA and phthalates used in food packaging are safe, many of these substances have already been banned or voluntarily phased out. "While many of these bacteria are harmless in small amounts, heat can amplify their growth, potentially leading to harmful levels …" Plastics can start leaching chemicals when temperatures reach 85 degrees. And the process accelerates significantly at higher temperatures, especially above 100 degrees, Savage said. Even BPA-free bottles may not be a safer alternative. Many of these products use chemical substitutes that, according to Savage, are structurally similar to BPA and may have similar endocrine-disrupting effects. These alternatives haven't been studied extensively, leaving scientists cautious. Another growing concern is the presence of microplastics – tiny plastic particles that can shed from the bottle over time, especially under heat. Studies in animals have linked microplastic exposure to inflammation, cellular stress and hormonal disruption, though the full impact on human health remains unclear. Plastic bottles reused after opening – especially those left in warm environments – can also become a breeding ground for bacteria, including E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus (staph infection), introduced from the mouth, hands or air. "While many of these bacteria are harmless in small amounts, heat can amplify their growth, potentially leading to harmful levels that cause gastrointestinal issues or infections," Savage told Fox News Digital. Bacteria can thrive in microscopic grooves and scratches in plastic bottles, Savage said. Studies have found that bacteria can grow in open bottles within 48 hours, even at room temperature. Some concerns about heated plastic bottles have been exaggerated or misunderstood. For example, claims that dioxins – known carcinogens – are released when plastic bottles are left in hot cars have been debunked by scientists. These rumors trace back in part to a viral 2006 email attributed to musician Sheryl Crow, a breast cancer survivor, who warned about cancer-causing chemicals from heated bottles. However, experts affirm that PET does not contain or produce dioxins. To reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals and microbes, experts recommend avoiding the reuse of single-use plastic water bottles – especially in hot environments. "Glass and stainless steel can withstand repeated heat and sun exposure," said Bryan Quoc Le, a California food scientist and author of the book "150 Food Science Questions Answered." While bacteria can also grow in reusable containers, glass and stainless steel bottles are easier to clean thoroughly and can withstand high-temperature washing — "which can reduce microbial growth," Le added.

Rare Barbary lion cubs born at Czech zoo are part of a plan to return the breed to the wild. See photos of their public debut.
Four Barbary lion cubs recently made their public debut at a Czech zoo that's working to eventually reintroduce the breed to its native habitat decades after it went extinct in the wild. The three females and one male were seen playing in their outdoor enclosure at Dvůr Králové Safari Park on Wednesday, enjoying themselves under the watchful eyes of their parents, Khalila and Bart. The cubs were born in early January and were first spotted out in the lion pavilion in April. But their home will change soon. As part of an international endangered species program that coordinates efforts for their survival in captivity, the cubs will be sent to other participating parks, including the Beersheba zoo in Israel. Chances are that might not be the end of the story for the animal. Dvůr Králové Deputy Director Jaroslav Hyjánek said that while preliminary steps have been taken for a possible reintroduction of the Barbary lion into its natural habitat, it's still a "far distant future." The majestic member of the Northern lion subspecies, the Barbary lion once roamed freely its native northern Africa, including the Atlas Mountains. A symbol of strength, they were almost completely wiped out due to human activities. Many were killed by gladiators in Roman times, while overhunting and a loss of habitat contributed to their extinction later. The last known photo of a wild lion was taken in 1925, while the last individual was killed in 1942. It's believed the last small populations went extinct in the wild in the middle of the 1960s. Fewer than 200 Barbary lions are currently estimated to live in captivity. These aren't the first Barbary cubs to be born at the Dvůr Králové Safari Park. Two cubs were born in July 2021, three in July 2020 and two in May 2019, all to mom Khalila who made her debut at the zoo in 2018. The licensed breeding of the lions is "guided by the recommendations of the coordinator of the European Conservation Programme" on suitable mates and where to place cubs for the highest possible genetic diversity, the park said. "These steps are crucial for the survival of the species in the future," the zoo said. Hyjánek said that after initial talks with Moroccan authorities, who have not rejected the idea of their reintroduction, a conference of experts has been planned to take place in Morocco late this year or early 2026 to decide whether it would make sense to go ahead with such a plan in one of the national parks in the Atlas Mountains. Any reintroduction would face numerous bureaucratic and other obstacles. Since the lion has not been present in the environment for such a long time, the plans would have to ensure their protection, a sufficient prey population and cooperation and approval from local communities. Hyjánek said such a move is still worth trying if it turns out to be sustainable. "It's important to have such a vision for any animal," he said. "Without it, the existence of zoos wouldn't make sense."
