For the third time in a row, an inspector found that food items were not being held at the proper temperature. Diced tomatoes, Pico de Gallo, sour cream, shredded cheese and guacamole were held in a cooler, but all were above the required 41°F.
The cooler was condemned, and all of the out of temperature items were thrown out. A yellow food safety alert placard was posted, and the cooler will need to be repaired by March 4.
Other issues the inspector noted included an employee picked something up from the floor and then started putting on a new pair of gloves without washing her hands, the chicken nuggets were found between 124°F and 128°F inside the food warmer and the door seals of both the milk coolers in the front service area were soiled.
A follow-up inspection will be done in 5-7 businesses days to ensure the violation was corrected.
Also in Champaign, an inspector found seven risk factor/intervention violations and 3 repeat risk factor/intervention violations at Ten Seconds Rice Noodle.

For the third time in a row, several food items were held more than 24 hours and were not dated. The unmarked containers of beef, chicken, pork, noodles, crab and sausage led to an inspector posting a yellow food safety alert on the business.
The inspector found two other repeated violations which had occurred during the last two inspections. Cooked and cooled fish were being held at 54°F, rather than the required 41°F or less. And, at the beginning of the inspection, the inspector found a pot in the sink and a pair of tongs hanging on the hand sink splash guard.
New issues that the inspector found included an employee entering the kitchen, putting on gloves, and beginning food service without washing their hands, a rice scoop stored in a cup of 64°F stagnant water, and the handwashing sink did not provide hot water (once a knob underneath the sink was turned, it eventually reached a maximum of 91°F).
A follow-up inspection will be done in 5-7 businesses days to verify the long-term corrections have been made.
The Wendy's located at 505 N Cunningham Ave. in Urbana received a yellow food safety alert after an inspection on Wednesday.
The inspector found two risk factor/intervention violations and one repeated risk factor/intervention violation.
Pritzker's proposed budget to eliminate health care program for non citizen adults
For the third time in a row, the inspector found an issue with the restaurant's cold holding. In this inspection, cut tomatoes, shredded cheese, ghost pepper sauce and mayonnaise were all found to be above 41°F. The inspector also found that the cooler the eggs were in wasn't keeping them at the correct temperature. So, the egg cooler was condemned, and the eggs were moved to a walk-in cooler.
Other issues the inspector found included the hand sink being used as a dump sink for soda and clean containers were stacked wet on the wire rack above the prep sink. The inspector also labeled the physical facilities in 'poor repair' because the caulk was in bad condition at the front hand sink and a floor tile was cracked near the fryers.
A follow-up inspection will be done in 5-7 business days to make sure the violations were corrected.

JB Pritzker's school-screening law mandates more mental illness — and your state could be next, parents
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker recently signed a bill to compel all Illinois schools to offer students mental-health screenings. Pritzker proclaimed the new law 'is a national first worth celebrating.' But his Children's Behavioral Health Transformation Initiative is far likelier to produce more jobs for therapists than better health for pupils. Academic achievement levels in Illinois schools have sharply declined in recent years, but that's not stopping politicians from further intruding into students' lives and minds. Therapy can help individuals deal with their struggles and crises. But permitting schools to pirouette as saviors is perilous considering today's unhinged notions of mental health. The American Psychological Association designated traditional masculinity a de facto mental illness in 2019, stating its 'stoicism' and similar traits are 'on the whole, harmful.' So only snowflakes are mentally healthy nowadays? Psychiatrists have concocted labels that leave millions of Americans at their mercy. The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) lists more than 300 mental illnesses, five times as many as it specified in the 1960s. Even caffeine withdrawal is certified as a mental disorder. Dr. Allen Frances, writing in Psychiatric Times, warned that the latest DSM contains 'many changes that seem clearly unsafe and scientifically unsound' and is 'likely to lead to massive over-diagnosis and harmful over-medication.' 'Mental-health interventions' are probably derailing more lives than ever before. The New York Times last year showcased psychiatric 'prevalence inflation' — a vast increase in reported mental illness among teenagers who are encouraged to view normal feelings as grave maladies. Oxford University psychologist Lucy Foulkes observed school programs are 'creating this message that teenagers are vulnerable, they're likely to have problems, and the solution is to outsource them to a professional.' Foulkes explained in a paper she coauthored that 'awareness efforts' spur young people 'to interpret and report milder forms of distress as mental health problems.' Filing such complaints 'leads some individuals to experience a genuine increase in symptoms, because labeling distress as a mental health problem can affect an individual's self-concept and behavior in a way that is ultimately self-fulfilling.' Psychiatric labels can become a ball and chain that people drag behind them. Endless classroom presentations on mental health spur 'co-rumination' — excessively talking about one's problems — which evokes memories of first dates from hell. University of Southern California clinical psychologist Darby Saxbe warns that mental-illness labels have 'become an identity marker that makes people feel special and unique . . . telling them this is who they are and will be in the future.' It is especially ironic to see schools coming to the mental-health rescue after millions of young kids were traumatized by the forced isolation that accompanied pointless COVID school lockdowns. Depression and anxiety skyrocketed among youth, and emergency rooms reported a 51% increase in suicide attempts by teenage girls in early 2021 over early 2019. After schools reopened, students were endlessly hectored to comply with idiotic mask mandates that did nothing except multiply anxiety. The Illinois program is certain to boost the number of young people given drugs after receiving their mental-illness designations. Antidepressant prescriptions for Americans aged 12 to 25 soared by 66% between 2016 and 2022. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently lamented antidepressants are more addictive than heroin. Federal law compounds the peril of overdiagnosis of mental illnesses. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, individuals can demand 'reasonable accommodations' after they're certified anxious or depressed. The ADA has turned mental illness into entitlements for slacker students to get extra times for tests, no deadlines and other special treatment. Public schools are heading towards the same diagnosis deluge occurring on college campuses. A 2022 Boston University analysis of students on almost 400 campuses found '60% of students met criteria for one or more mental health problems, a nearly 50% increase from 2013.' Mental-health labels and interventions can be a Pandora's box. College 'students with both a mental health condition diagnosis and current moderate/severe symptoms of depression and/or anxiety' were 10 times more likely to contemplate suicide and 47 times more likely to attempt suicide than 'students with none/minimal depression and/or anxiety symptoms and no mental health condition diagnosis,' per a 2022 Journal of Affective Disorders study (emphasis added). But at least not everyone who received a mental-illness diagnosis attempted suicide. Rather than being a model for the nation, the Illinois Children's Behavioral Health Transformation Initiative is a warning to parents of the perils that may be coming to their state. Hooking kids on bogus labels and antidepressants has already ruined too many young lives. Passing out millions more psychiatric Purple Hearts will undermine the happiness and health of young Americans. Illinois becomes 1st state to require student mental health screenings
For students in Illinois, mental health screenings will soon be required alongside annual vision and hearing exams. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill into law Thursday that will require public school students in grades 3 through 12 in the state to undergo a mental health screening each year. The change will go into effect in the 2027-2028 school year with at least one screening per student required annually, according to a press release from Pritzker's office. Pritzker also said the new legislation makes Illinois the first state to mandate universal mental health assessments for public school students. "At a time when our kids are struggling with anxiety and depression more than ever before, it's our responsibility to ensure that young people have all the support that they need to get the help that they deserve," Pritzker said in remarks at the signing ceremony. "Our goal is an integrated, comprehensive approach to quality mental and behavioral health services for young people across the state," Pritzker added, saying the legislation will pave the way for schools to receive resources and support to implement the new push for screenings. The bill, SB1560, encourages schools to connect student caregivers and parents with the Behavioral Health Care and Ongoing Navigation or BEACON Portal, a tool launched in January that can provide information about available mental health resources and services. Illinois' move comes two months after the Trump administration pulled funding for about $1 billion in mental health grants. The Department of Education said in May that the grants would be discontinued because the money was going to "race-based actions" instead of mental health services in schools. Students' mental health has been top of mind ahead of the back-to-school season. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, anxiety and depression are some of the most common mental health conditions diagnosed in children between the ages of 3 and 17, with mental health being a significant concern among teens. The Illinois State Board of Education has until Sept. 1, 2026, to provide schools with guidance and policies to implement the mandated mental health screenings. The state is also promising schools free screening tools and access to technology to fulfill the mandate.

Students to get mental health screenings under bill Gov. Pritzker signed at Evanston school
For 17-year-old Abhinav Anne, offering Illinois students a chance to get a free mental health screening feels like a milestone in his work in mental health advocacy. Governor JB Pritzker cemented that milestone with a flick of his wrist Thursday afternoon at Chute Middle School in Evanston by signing a new Illinois law, the first of its kind in the nation, he said, to grant students mental health screenings at least once a year. The bill, SB 1560, requires all Illinois public schools to offer third through 12th grade students a free, optional mental health screening. The bill passed the Illinois House of Representatives on May 21, and the Senate a month earlier in April. The state is anticipated to pick up the cost of the health screenings and the Illinois State Board of Education is expected to provide local school districts guidance and policy on how to use the screening tools by Sept. 1, 2026, according to the governor's office. The screenings are slated to begin in the 2027-2028 school year. 'Just as we have been screening for vision or hearing challenges that students have had for many years, we will now provide assessments for mental health,' Pritzker said, prior to signing the bill into law. 'This is a national first that's worth celebrating about the state of Illinois.' 'We know how transformational these screenings can be for kids at this age — they provide early identification and intervention so that those who are struggling get the help that they need as soon as possible,' he said. The governor chose to sign the bill at an Evanston/Skokie School District 65 school because of the district's leading mental health initiatives that outpace other school districts in the state, Pritzker said. 'Chute's been an example of a place that actually pays attention to the mental health of its students and does its best to refer people wherever they can,' he said. 'And I used to live here,' Pritzker said, of Evanston. 'I know how important this community is and its leadership for some in the rest of the state that may not already have gotten there,' he said. Hannah Dillow, District 65's communications manager, said the district launched its counseling program four years ago to provide middle school students additional mental health, social and academic support. District 65 also launched its Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) screener five years ago, allowing schools in the district to proactively identify student needs and offer ongoing support, she said. The district also uses a structured intervention system for academic and social-emotional needs, conducts student surveys to gauge students' sense of belonging, and offers a holistic approach to student well-being, Dillow said. Anne, a rising senior at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, part of Indian Prairie School District 204, said the bill signing signaled to him a promise of compassion from the state and public schools to prioritize mental health, something he has learned a lot about after having a crisis of his own. 'Earlier this year, I found myself sinking under the weight of expectations. I couldn't seem to escape. I wrote around me, spoke about potential, about a bright future, but to me, those hopes felt like chains, like pressure on something already starting to happen,' he said. 'This is our journey forward, to believe in its brightness,' Anne said. 'To every young person who feels unseen or unheard, this moment is for you.' Anne said he helped advocate for the bill when he met Dana Weiner, Illinois' Chief Officer for Children's Behavioral Health Transformation. 'Over the last three years in partnership with ISBE (the Illinois State Board of Education) we have learned a lot about what (school) districts need in order to better identify and respond to youth who confront mental health challenges,' Weiner said Thursday. State Superintendent of Education Tony Sanders also commented, saying, 'Too often, we only recognize a student's distress when it becomes a crisis. With universal screening, we shift from reaction to prevention.' Along with the mental health screenings, the bill aims to raise awareness of the state's online Behavioral Health Care and Ongoing Navigation, or BEACON, portal. According to the governor's office, the portal provides Illinois families with information about available behavioral health services for children and adolescents, including: the Illinois Department of Human Services, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services and the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice. The portal officially launched in early 2025.
