Third test between Wallabies and British and Irish Lions delayed by lightning

Washington Post02-08-2025
SYDNEY — The third rugby test between Australia and the British and Irish Lions has been delayed by a severe lightning storm over Sydney on Saturday.
Shortly after halftime with the Wallabies leading 8-0, and while play had been stopped for a serious head injury to Lions lock James Ryan, a match official entered the field and advised referee Nika Amashukeli to escort the players from the field.

'It comes with risk': Dockers weigh up Fyfe, Young call

Playing Nat Fyfe and Hayden Young in the same team will come with risks, but it's a roll of the dice Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir appears willing to take as the race for the AFL flag heats up. The Dockers' bid for premiership success was given an extra dose of motivation on Monday when Fyfe announced he will be retiring at the end of the season. The two-time Brownlow medallist is yet to win a flag during his decorated 245-game career, and Fremantle are desperate to send him out a winner. Fyfe has been beset by injuries this season - the most recent coming when he strained his calf while warming up as the sub in the round-16 win over St Kilda. The 33-year-old made a successful AFL return as the sub in last week's six-point win over Port Adelaide, and he's set to play the same role in Friday night's blockbuster against the fifth-placed Brisbane Lions at Optus Stadium. two Brownlow Medals, three Doig Medals, three All-Australian jackets, Club Captain and life end is near, but it's not over yet.#foreverfyfe — Fremantle Dockers (@freodockers) August 11, 2025 Young has also been plagued by injuries this year. Two hamstring tears - the second of which required surgery - was followed by a first-quarter adductor strain a fortnight ago. Young is on track to return for next week's final-round encounter with the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium. But the question remains - can the Dockers afford to carry two injury-plagued players into the finals? "It comes with risk," Longmuir said on Wednesday. "Those two players, if they get through, they really help us. "If they get injured - that's a risk you have to balance at this time of the year. "Hopefully Fyfey gets through another game this week. "If Youngy comes back next week after only missing a couple of weeks and has a good week, they're good discussions to be had at match committee. "We're at the pointy end of the season, and no selection is without risk at this time of the year." Young was listed as a test to make a surprise early return this week, but Longmuir all but ruled it out on Wednesday. "We want to get some work into him. We want to make sure when he's back, he's resilient," Longmuir said. Fremantle (15-6) have won 11 of their past 12 games to surge into fourth spot. But such is the closeness of the top nine teams, they could miss out on a finals berth altogether if they lose to the Lions and Bulldogs. Conversely, two wins would be enough to lock away a top-four berth if either Geelong, Collingwood or Gold Coast drop a game. Longmuir left the door open for Fyfe to play a full game in the coming weeks. "I think he's able to hold up to a full game - maybe not this week, but going forward," Longmuir said. "But having said that, I think he's one of the best subs in the comp."

Swans champion flags full-time switch in NRL after leaving AFL club after 15 years

Sydney Swans champion Nick Davis has hinted at making a full-time switch to NRL coaching after announcing his departure from the AFL club after 15 years. Davis is a Swans cult hero after winning the AFL flag with Sydney in 2005. He famously kicked four-straight goals in the final quarter as the Swans beat Geelong in an iconic semi-final that year, before their win over West Coast in the decider. Since retiring in 2008 he's held numerous coaching roles at the Swans (starting in 2010), and was previously a runner for the AFL club. He's been a specialist skills coach for the men's team, and also helped the women's team as an assistant. But with Dean Cox entrenched as the men's head coach and Scott Gowans leading the women's team, Davis feels his time at the club has run it's course. "After 15 years coaching at the Sydney Swans, I've made the call to move on," he wrote on social media this week. "I've coached across every level and am proud to have helped build culture, set the standard, and bring success to the club. I'm excited and looking forward to what's next……..Thanks for the memories." Nick Davis could make full-time switch to NRL coaching Elaborating on SEN radio on Wednesday, the 45-year-old flagged a potential full-time switch to the NRL. Davis has worked as a kicking and catching coach at the Sydney Roosters for a number of years, and also played for the club at the defunct NRL Nines event in 2020. He also works with the NSW Waratahs women's team in the SuperW. "It's been something that's been building up since the start of this year," he said. "I've had a variety of roles at the Swans and I've probably just hit my head on the ceiling a little bit. There was probably only two spots to go into, but obviously Coxy is the coach of the men's and Scotty Gowans is the coach of the women's. "The club have always been really good to me in terms of some of the other roles I have with other codes. At the start of the year I took some time off to sort of work out what I wanted to do with the next part of life and coaching. It's an opportunity to expand some of my other roles that I do across some of the other codes." RELATED: Ross Lyon's eye-opening claim about Harley Reid amid Saints bombshell AFL world rocked after Ben Cousins goes public with awful revelation Davis didn't go into detail about what the future might hold, but hinted at taking on a larger role with the Roosters in the NRL. He's had a part-time role with the TriColours for a number of years, but could be set for a more permanent code switch. "Having some time off from the Swans has allowed me to up my time at the Roosters and have a bit of success there in a few areas over the last month," he said. "My biggest job today is putting up some bombs for Ted (James Tedesco). There's a few conversations going on and I'm definitely excited to expand some of the roles I've been doing at the Roosters." Davis revealed he worked with Hugo Savala in the Sydney Swans' academy before the youngster switched codes and signed with the Roosters. Savala has been a revelation in 2026, with many calling for the Roosters to backflip on their plans to sign Daly Cherry-Evans so Savala can remain in the halves.

Ross Lyon makes stunning claim about Harley Reid amid $25m St Kilda bombshell

St Kilda coach Ross Lyon has shut down links with West Coast player Harley Reid after claims the club were considering a $25 million deal for the 20-year-old superstar. Eagles fans were left stunned after Essendon legend Tim Watson claimed St Kilda were launching an extraordinary offer for their young star who is tossing up his options. Reid is contracted to the Eagles for next year, but reports suggest a number of Victorian clubs are set to throw money at the 20-year-old to convince him to return to his home state. Although eyebrows were raised when Watson spoke about a rumour that Reid had been offered $25 million across 12 years at St Kilda. Although the rumour hasn't lasted long with Lyon emphatically shutting down suggestions the club is throwing that sort of money at Reid. Lyon told Channel Nine's Footy Classified he had never spoken with Reid as the Eagles attempt to keep their promising talent away from rival clubs. 'I've never spoken to Harley Reid in my life... I love Tim, but he got this one wrong,' Lyon said on the show. 'The (Eagles) CEO, Don Pyke, who we all love and respect, is frustrated at their end for whatever reason for Harley and negotiations. Clearly they think there's something out in the ether that's getting in their way. Well, it certainly isn't me.' Reid has been ruled out for the remainder of the current season with a foot injury, but speculation is ramping up as to where his future lies. The 20-year-old and his management have reportedly asked the Eagles for a two-year deal until the end of 2027, which would then trigger a lucrative nine-year extension. The ball is now in West Coast's court as to whether they're comfortable paying an enamours figure. A number of Victorian clubs are speculated to be willing to pay Reid close to $2 million a season, but it appears Lyon and his side are not one of the pursuers. Ross Lyon shuts down player unrest at St Kilda Lyon also used the platform to shut down speculation a number of players were seeking an exit from the club. SEN Radio SA's Michelangelo Rucci stunned St Kilda having claimed a number of stars could be seeking an exit as the club seeks a number of signings. 'St Kilda have been actively looking to spend money — the fallout is Callum Wilkie will seek his options elsewhere. Jack Steele will explore greener pastures, as will Marcus Windhager. As for Rowan Marshall, he's going somewhere!' Rucci said. But Lyon wasn't impressed with the reports and even claimed he had just spoken to Wilkie who had suggested he wanted to remain with St Kilda. '6.30 tonight, in my car, in my driveway, (Wilkie said): 'Ross I've never entertained going anywhere else, I love St Kilda, I love what we're doing',' Lyon added. While Rucci's report raised eyebrows, Ross hit back and dismissed any mass exodus from the club. 'There's a lot of half-baked stories, that's what I see," Lyon added. 'I heard the (Michaelangelo) Rucci stuff. I thought it was two old blokes having a beer and a barbecue in the backyard ... there was no substance, no rigour. I was like: 'Ruc, you send me postcards from Italy herding the sheep and counting the sheep.' 'To be honest, you're a Port Adelaide nuffy, let's move on. Without being denigrating. Does he write content for the Port Adelaide SANFL club, is he a mad Port Adelaide, are they trying to get us into a bit of turmoil? Is that what's happened to Collingwood? Everyone is trying to unsettle Collingwood. Next minute (Darcy) Cameron has signed. It's all part of the theatre, it's all part of feeding the chooks.' St Kilda sit on 32 points and have missed out on finals footy in 2025. Lyon admitted one of his biggest tasks is locking down superstar Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera's future at the club. Wanganeen-Milera is reportedly tossing up a return to South Australia, but Lyon admitted it's the club's job to do their best to keep him at St Kilda.
