Île-Bizard woman convicted in 2021 death of cyclist in Montreal's West Island
Christine Pryde was found guilty of dangerous driving, impaired driving and criminal negligence causing the death of Irène Dehem.
On May 18, 2021, 50 year-old Dehem was riding her bike on l'Anse-à-l'Orme Road around 12:15 p.m. when she was hit by a car, according to Montreal police spokesperson Const. Jean-Pierre Brabant.
At the time, a witness told police that the driver was heading south when she failed to navigate a curve in the road, Brabant said.
The cyclist was northbound when she was struck, and the car ended up in a ditch.
Following the collision, Pryde told several people she'd fallen asleep at the wheel. She had taken prescription drugs and the judge said she ignored the potential side effects.
The victim's husband, Dominic Lemelin, says he hopes this case sends a message.
"Under circumstances where you feel you should not be driving, that people really take it seriously," said Lemelin of what he hopes others can take from the verdict. "But apart from that, it doesn't change anything from the fact that my kids don't have their mother anymore."
Pryde was so shaken by the ruling that the hearing had to be suspended several times.
She will be back in court for sentencing arguments in February.

A man suspected in an assault on Île Ste-Hélène jumped in the St. Lawrence River to escape police early Saturday morning, Montreal police say. The man leaped in the water around 4 a.m., police say, with security officers locating the man on the nearby Île Notre-Dame around 7:40 a.m. Police brought the 26-year-old man to 'an investigation centre,' and questioned him to 'determine his involvement in the assault,' police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant said. Man arrested after vehicle crashes through front door of RCMP office in Montreal
MONTREAL — A man is under arrest after a vehicle went through the front door of the RCMP headquarters Saturday morning in the Montreal suburb of Westmount, just west of downtown. No one was injured inside the building and Montreal police said the suspect has mental-health issues and was possibly in crisis. Terrorism is not considered a factor in the case, police said. Const. 'We're not talking about a high-speed collision, but he went slowly into the entrance and broke two windows of the entrance,' Brabant said. Only the front of the vehicle was inside the building. The suspect was transported to hospital with minor injuries and investigators will meet with him when they are able. Police said according to preliminary information, the man had approached the building first on foot and allegedly later returned with his vehicle at some point. Two RCMP officers were inside the building at the time the vehicle entered but were unharmed. The building is the Quebec divisional headquarters for the federal police force and has been at the location on Dorchester Boulevard since 1920. The RCMP's Quebec division referred all questions about the incident to Montreal police. It is the second incident at an RCMP office this week. On Monday, officers shot a person in the parking lot of the Strathcona detatchment in Sherwood Park, Alta., outside Edmonton after allegedly noting what appeared to be a firearm. The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital. Police report no other injuries. Montreal police say they received a call around 8:20 a.m. alerting them to the incident. The man allegedly entered the detachment on foot before returning to his vehicle and driving it through the door 'slowly into the entrance' and broke two windows, Brabant said. Two RCMP officers were onsite at the time, Montreal police say, but Montreal police responded to the incident. 'We have reason to believe that he drove under the influence,' Brabant said, for which he will likely be charged. The man suffers from mental health issues, he said.
