Governments around the world are already realising that private AI cannot be built on public cloud monopolies. Digital identity and agent oversight need to be open and transparent, not hidden, ad hoc, or opaque, says Sergio Gago Huerta, CTO at Cloudera.

Google commits $370mln to AI in Africa

Google has announced R670m ($37m) in cumulative funding to support artificial intelligence development across Africa, along with the launch of a new AI Community Centre in Accra, Ghana. The funding spans research, digital skills, infrastructure and support for startups, with projects targeting key sectors including food security, local language technologies, and responsible AI development. Some of the funding announced was previously committed but unreported. Among the major initiatives is a R450m ($25m) investment into the AI Collaborative for Food Security, a new multi-partner effort to co-develop AI tools aimed at improving early hunger forecasting, crop resilience and support for smallholder farmers. In South Africa, two research institutions will receive R18m ($1m) each from The University of Pretoria's African Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence will use the grant to expand applied AI research and training. Wits University's Machine Intelligence and Neural Discovery Institute will use its grant to fund postgraduate students conducting foundational AI research. Google is also backing the development of AI tools in over 40 African languages through R54 million ($3 million) in funding for the Masakhane Research Foundation. Additional funding will support education-focused programmes across Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, as well as a catalytic initiative aimed at helping over 100 AI-driven startups scale. The new AI Community Centre in Accra will provide a physical space for learning and collaboration, with programming focused on AI literacy, community tech, social impact, and the arts. The company says the move builds on its broader efforts to support Africa's growing AI talent base and to ensure technologies are developed with local context and global relevance. KKR partners with Capital Group to launch fund blending public and private equity

KKR and Capital Group will launch a fund that will give investors exposure to both private and public equity, the investment firms said on Wednesday, as appetite rises for diversification beyond traditional assets. The fund will be launched in early 2026 in the U.S., pending approval from regulators. It is structured as an interval fund, which allows investors to exit only during set windows, and will have low minimum investment thresholds. With high-profile companies remaining private for longer, investment firms are seeking new ways to meet rising demand for exposure to private markets. The potential for outsized returns from privately held companies has drawn interest from retail investors. These assets are also less sensitive to the economic swings that impact public markets, making them useful for diversification. "Private market investments can enhance returns and add diversification within a portfolio, yet have historically been out of reach for everyday investors given accreditation requirements and higher investment minimums," said Holly Framsted, head of product group at Capital. The new fund will deepen the partnership between KKR and Capital, which in April launched two funds focused on a mix of public and private credit. These funds have pulled in $100 million in flows in the first three months, the companies said.

Abu Dhabi, UAE: A majority of UAE technology leaders identify cloud (93%) and Generative AI (GenAI) (89%) transformation as top business priorities over the next three years, recognizing both as foundational to future growth. That's according to new research from leading global online learning platform Coursera, Inc. (NYSE: COUR), developed in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Titled From Cloud to AI: How Tech Leaders are Investing in Skills Development to Drive Transformation, the report offers key insights into how organizations and their senior technology leaders are strategically addressing skills gaps to meet their digital transformation goals. Core findings show that UAE tech leaders view keeping pace with technology (61%) and staying ahead of security threats (60%) as the most critically important drivers of skills development. Optimizing cloud spend (59%) and managing complex infrastructures (52%) were also cited as major concerns, underscoring the urgent need for a skilled workforce. Kais Zribi, Coursera's General Manager for the Middle East and Africa, said: 'While automation is vital to transforming teams, workflows, and business operations, the UAE data reveal that strategic investments in human capital through upskilling and reskilling will be crucial to driving innovation. As organizations look to fully harness the potential of cloud and AI, investing equally in technology and people will be foundational to building a future-ready workforce. 'This report delivers a clear mandate for technology leaders: investing in skills development must be a cornerstone of every transformation strategy.' The report also highlights that 95% of tech leaders worldwide view cloud transformation as a key business goal. Globally, foundational skills are prioritized, with 63% ranking cloud skills, such as cloud development and engineering, as the most critical, followed by data (58%) and cybersecurity (54%). AI skills rank fourth, with 47% identifying them as important over the next three years. Globally, tech leaders report clear benefits from investing in skills development, including enhanced performance and productivity (72%), greater workforce agility (67%), and improved talent mobility (58%). More than half (52%) of global tech leaders expect 30-50% of tasks to be automated. Nearly all (99%) anticipate their codebases will be partially AI-generated or developed with AI assistance in the next three years, with 86% expecting 20-50% of their codebase to involve AI in its creation. Yet, 88% believe human contributions remain irreplaceable, emphasizing that AI success depends on greater investment in talent development. In fact, 77% of leaders globally recognize that upskilling existing employees will be essential to achieving transformation goals within the next 12 to 18 months. The global study was conducted across the US, the UK, India, the UAE, France, and Mexico between March and April 2025.
