What to know about the next James Bond movie now that Denis Villeneuve will direct it

Yahoo4 hours ago

In the 50-plus years of James Bond, the wait between films has never gone longer than six years. The next entry, and first since Daniel Craig's dramatic exit, may test that — but things are speeding up.
On Wednesday, Amazon MGM Studio announced that Denis Villeneuve will direct the 26th Bond movie, putting the franchise in the hands of one of the most respected big-budget filmmakers. Here's what to know about that decision, and where things stand for 007.
From 'Dune' to Bond
Villeneuve, the 57-year-old French Canadian director, edged out other filmmakers who were reportedly eyed for the gig, including Edward Berger ('Conclave') and Paul King ('Paddington 2'). Since emerging with 2010's 'Incendies," Villeneuve has established himself as a steward of cinematic IP ("Blade Runner 2049," 'Dune') and a specialist in dark, doom-laden spectacle ("Sicaro," 'Arrival').
'James Bond is in the hands of one of today's greatest filmmakers,' said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.
The culmination for Villeneuve has been the 'Dune' films. His first two entries have surpassed $1 billion in box office and gathered a combined 15 Academy Award nominations, winning seven. Villeneuve is expected to begin shooting the third 'Dune' film this summer, with a cast including Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh, Zendaya and Javier Bardem.
"I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory,' said Villeneuve. 'I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.'
What's the timetable?
Amazon, which bought MGM Studios in 2022 for $8.5 billion, hasn't set a release date yet or announced a screenwriter. Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are shepherding the movie for the first time. In February, Amazon MGM Studios secured creative control of the franchise from Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, whose family has presided over Bond since the first film, 1962's 'Dr. No.'
The most likely timing would be production starting in 2026 and the film being released sometime in 2027.
Who's in the mix?
No new 007 has been named, but that hasn't stopped rumors and conjecture from running rampant.
It's pure speculation buts oddsmakers have a few expected contenders for the martini-sipping role. Those include Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Aaron Pierre, Henry Cavill, James Norton and Jack Lowden. Expectations are that the new Bond will remain male and British, but producers have said nothing publicly to tip their hand.
Whoever it is will have big shoes to fill. In his five-film, 15-year stretch in the tuxedo, Daniel Craig was widely seen as one of the best Bonds, including the high point of 'Skyfall' (2012) and the swan song of 'No Time to Die' (2021).
New corporate overloads with something to prove
Since Albert 'Cubby' Broccoli obtained the movie rights to Ian Fleming's books, James Bond has been a family business. That didn't change after Amazon bought MGM, but it did earlier this year when Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli agreed to let the studio take creative control.
That handoff stoked concern from many Bond fans that 007 would be picked apart for spinoffs, series and the kind of intellectual property strip mining Hollywood has been known for in other franchises like 'Star Wars.' So far, though, Amazon MGM has made no announcement about any spinoffs, and is prioritizing the 26th Bond movie.

James Wan Knows You're Dying for Details About That R-Rated ‘M3GAN' Sexbot Spin-Off

Everyone's favorite kill-crazy toy not named Chucky is back in theaters June 27, and if M3GAN 2.0 captures audiences like the 2023 original did, a third film seems all but guaranteed. But before a trilogy might happen, another film in M3GAN's universe will arrive: SOULM8TE, the previously announced R-rated spin-off that will examine the dangers of AI from a more grown-up perspective. In new interviews, producer James Wan and M3GAN star Allison Williams (an executive producer on SOULM8TE) spilled a few beans on what to expect. Both Wan and Williams told Entertainment Weekly that SOULM8TE came from the inevitable questions raised by a world with the means to create an eerily lifelike AI doll. 'We will give you a different person and a different story and an R-rated world to do this in. Let M3GAN be M3GAN, and leave her out of this completely,' Williams said. 'It felt irresistible to then say, if a M3GAN existed in our world, someone would take that tech and put it in the form of a female-bodied person whose sole purpose on the planet is to pleasure a person. We extrapolate from there.' Wan said SOULM8TE is 'basically set in the same AI world but seen through a more grown-up perspective, one that embraces all the great erotic thrillers from the '90s. It's like Fatal Attraction but with robots.' There will be humor baked in, but not on the level of 'sassiness' as what the M3GAN films bring to the table. Look for SOULM8TE—directed by Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother) and starring Evil Dead Rise's Lily Sullivan as the terrifying AI companion—to spice up theaters January 2, 2026. Want more io9 news? ‘F1 the Movie' Review: Brad Pitt's Unlikely Underdog

The problem with making an underdog sports movie that stars Brad Pitt is . . . Brad Pitt. Though taunted as 'elderly' by a younger Formula One driver in 'F1 the Movie,' his character still looks like Brad Pitt. 'That's a handsome man right there!' exclaims the mother of the junior competitor, who seethes as the audience laughs. You'd probably have to remove a limb or two from Brad Pitt's Sonny Hayes to make it look like anyone but Brad Pitt has a chance to be the conquering hero here. Which is fine. 'F1' is a fun, exciting, predictable popcorn picture so formulaic it even contains a reference to formula in its title. One of its producers is Mr. Pitt; another is Jerry Bruckheimer, who had one of his first huge hits with 'Top Gun.' Following the even bigger success three years ago of 'Top Gun: Maverick,' the assignment this time is pretty clear: Give Mr. Pitt his own 'Top Gun.' Cocky guy, cute girl, devil-may-care attitude, awesome machines, authority figures yelling, more or less, 'You can't do that, you rule-breaking rascal!'—it's all here, ably directed by 'Maverick' helmer Joseph Kosinski, who also serves as producer and gets story credit alongside the film's screenwriter, Ehren Kruger.

TRON: ARES Is Gearing Up to Redefine the Grid with "The Holy Grail of Computer Graphics" — GeekTyrant

From Tron , the original 1982 film's groundbreaking VFX to Tron: Legacy 's digital dazzle a full generation later, the franchise has always been a step ahead of reality. Now, after over a decade later, Tron: Ares is ready to boot up and deliver the next major system upgrade, one that might just blur the lines between the virtual and real worlds entirely. Director Joachim Rønning is going all in on redefining what digital filmmaking can look like. In a new interview with Empire, he reveals that ILM is treating this project with a level of reverence usually reserved for cinema's most ambitious undertakings: 'The Holy Grail of computer graphics.' This time, The Grid is getting a full-scale evolution. Rønning explains: 'The concept was that a program is filming a program. So it's shot by a robot.' Even the camera work has been reimagined, with motion-controlled movements mimicking the cold precision of a digital entity. It's not just stylized, it's part of the story. The return of Tron also brings back one of the minds who started it all, Steven Lisberger. And for him, the franchise's legacy has always been about staying just a few steps ahead of society, saying: 'Something comes out, and it's too avant-garde at the time. And then the real world catches up with it.' But this time, the world has caught up fast, maybe too fast. Tron: Ares will drop its digital world into our own, bringing iconic elements like Light Cycles into real-world environments. He continues: 'It has become a symbol of our riding this technology that is going faster than we ever imagined. We've integrated into it, and the speed of it is mind-boggling. And in Ares, it's a metaphor for the fact that this technology is moving through every part of our reality.' That idea of tech bleeding into every aspect of our lives sits at the core of Ares , and it's not lost on the cast. Greta Lee ( Past Lives ), who plays programmer Eve Kim, says the themes hit close to home. 'The movie touches all of these things. So many days on set, we would get the chills, because the ideas that [Lisberger] put in place years ago are not just still relevant, but in our faces. Inescapable.' Whether or not you've been waiting for another trip to The Grid, Tron: Ares might be arriving at exactly the right moment, where sci-fi isn't so fictional anymore. It's not just about escaping into a digital world this time. It's about what happens when that world escapes into ours. The film stars Jared Leto, Cameron Monaghan ( Star Wars Jedi ), Evan Peters ( WandaVision ), Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith ( Without Remorse ), Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, and Gillian Anderson. Jeff Bridges is also returning to the world of Tron. Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne wrote the script. The film arrives in theaters on October 10, 2025.
