‘Heroic': Fall River first responders prevented ‘unimaginable loss of life,' Gov. Healey says
Fall River fire chief gives emotional update on deadly blaze at assisted living facility
'Were it not for the heroic work, brave work, of these men and women who showed up last night, particularly our fire and police and EMS, we would have seen a much greater loss of life,' Healey said during a late Monday morning news conference.
Healey said everyone who was living at the Gabriel House on Oliver Street was unable to escape the building on their own.
'Thankfully, the vast majority of them were able to be taken out. Most of them were people who needed help,' Healey said. 'These are people who are not able to move themselves. They were non-mobile. Therefore, the work that the fire, police, and EMS did to get people out was truly amazing.'
Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon said the nine victims either perished in the building or while in transit to the hospital. Their names haven't been released.
Bacon said first responders rescued many other residents using ladders after people were found hanging out of windows as the fire burned around them.
'It's horrifying to think about what happened in the middle of the night, in the dark. People were just scrambling as best they could to get out through windows, firefighters coming up ladders, hauling people down in any way possible to get them out of the building, the panic, it's so heartbreaking,' Healey said. 'I'm heartbroken for the individuals who perished. I'm heartbroken for their families and their friends and loved ones.'
The fire at Gabriel House prompted a massive response, with every firefighter on duty in the city attending, along with 30 off-duty firefighters who were recalled.
Healey said she's grateful that the teams of first responders acted so quickly, noting that their swift action prevented an 'unimaginable loss of life.'
Healey pledged to Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan that her administration 'will do everything we can' to offer support and assistance to the community.
Fire investigators from the Fall River Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal's Office are working to determine the cause of the fire.

Landlord imprisoned for decades in hate-crime attack on Palestinian American family has died
A landlord sentenced to decades in prison after he killed a Palestinian American boy and wounded his mother has died. Three months ago, Joseph Czuba was sentenced to 53 years behind bars for the attack. He was found guilty in February of murder, attempted murder and hate-crime charges in the death of 6-year-old Wadee Alfayoumi and the wounding of the boy's mother, Hanan Shaheen. The 73-year-old Czuba targeted them in October 2023 because of their Islamic faith and as a response to the war between Israel and Hamas, which started days earlier. Czuba died Thursday in the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to a statement from the Will County Sheriff's Office. Ahmed Rehab, the executive director of Council on American-Islamic Relations' Chicago office, said in a statement on Saturday that 'this depraved killer has died, but the hate is still alive and well.' Evidence at trial included harrowing testimony from Shaheen and her frantic 911 call, along with bloody crime scene photos and police video. Jurors deliberated less than 90 minutes before handing in a verdict. The family had been renting rooms in Czuba's home in Plainfield, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) from Chicago when the attack happened. Central to prosecutors' case was harrowing testimony from the boy's mother, who said Czuba attacked her before moving on to her son, insisting they had to leave because they were Muslim. Prosecutors also played the 911 call and showed police footage. Czuba's wife, Mary, whom he has since divorced, also testified for the prosecution, saying he had become agitated about the Israel-Hamas war, which had erupted days earlier. Police said Czuba pulled a knife from a holder on a belt and stabbed the boy 26 times, leaving the knife in the child's body. Some of the bloody crime scene photos were so explicit that the judge agreed to turn television screens showing them away from the audience, which included Wadee's relatives. The attack renewed fears of anti-Muslim discrimination and hit particularly hard in Plainfield and surrounding suburbs, which have a large and established Palestinian community. Wadee's funeral drew large crowds, and Plainfield officials have dedicated a park playground in his honor.

Violence breaks out after Bronx Dominican Day Parade in NYC
Violence broke out Sunday after the Bronx Dominican Day Parade in New York City. Police say one person was stabbed and three others were shot. Thousands of people attended the parade, and some were still in the area when police responded to the scene. The first shooting was reported just after 6 p.m. Police said a 24-year-old man was shot in the buttocks near Elliott Place and Grand Concourse in the Mt. Eden section of the borough. Less than an hour later and just a block away, police responded to another shooting involving a 19-year-old woman and 19-year-old man on East 170th Street and Grand Concourse. Investigators said the woman was shot in the ankle and the man was shot in the neck. Police also responded to a stabbing just before 9:30 p.m. They said a 19-year-old was stabbed in the buttocks on Grand Concourse and Marcy Place. Officials say all three shooting victims are in stable condition. At this point, it's unclear if the shootings were connected. So far, no arrests have been made. New York City Mayor Eric Adams posted on social media just minutes before the first shooting, writing that more than 3,000 guns have been seized this year. The latest NYPD crime report shows the number of shooting victims and incidents are down in the Bronx, compared to last year. While the numbers are down, some who attended the parade said shootings like these threaten their safety. Anyone with information about the violence is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or 1-888-57-PISTA (74782) for Spanish. You can also submit a tip via their website.
