Johor announces 14 special initiatives for Felda settlers
KOTA TINGGI: The Johor government has introduced 14 special initiatives aimed at supporting Felda settlers, recognising their contributions to the state.
Among the key measures are 10 haj pilgrimage quotas, food baskets worth RM100 each for settlers, and educational assistance for their children.
Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced the initiatives during the Johor MADANI Felda Settlers' Day celebration in Felda Tunggal.
The total allocation for food baskets alone amounts to RM2.76 million.
Additional support will be provided to 71 Scheme Development and Security Committees, the Felda Youth Council of Malaysia, the Women's Association Movement, as well as mosques and surau.
Onn Hafiz also addressed long-standing housing issues, pledging to resolve abandoned second-generation housing projects in Felda Bukit Aping Timur and Felda Pasak.
'With the Felda Muafakat Secretariat and strong cooperation from management, we aim to settle this seven-year-old issue within this year,' he said.
The event was attended by Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and Felda chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu MP Datuk Chan Foong Hing allocated over RM100,000, this year, to reward 367 high-achieving students who excelled in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. This marks the second consecutive year the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Office has hosted the 'Anugerah Kecemerlangan SPM Madani' awards ceremony, which celebrates academic excellence and encourages students to continue striving for success. Chan, who is also Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, reaffirmed that quality education is a right for every student, regardless of race, religion or socioeconomic status. He underscored the Madani Government's commitment to ensuring equal access to education that can truly change lives and uplift communities. 'As Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised, quality education is the foundation of a Madani society. We must cultivate a generation that is not only knowledgeable but also morally grounded, in order to build an inclusive and competitive nation,' he said. 'As a member of the Madani administration, I fully support the Prime Minister's vision. We are committed to ensuring that no student is left behind – whether they come from B40 families, rural areas, or face physical and mental challenges.' The event was held at SJKC Chung Hwa Likas, last Saturday. Students who achieved between 6As and 11As received cash awards of RM250 to RM300 each. Among the recipients, 113 students scored 9As or above. Special awards were also presented for Best Male Student, Best Female Student, and Best Performing School. Notably, both the top male and female students were from Tshung Tsin Secondary School: Soh Yim Qin scored 10A+, while Mohammad Arif Mohammad Adam achieved 9A+ and 1A. Chan also welcomed the Madani Government's policy guaranteeing placement in the matriculation programme for all students who scored 10As and above in the 2024 SPM examination and applied for admission – regardless of race or background. He noted that this policy, introduced last year, reflects the government's commitment to fairness and equal opportunity in education. He added that the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Office will continue to work closely with the Sabah Education Department (PPD) and local schools to improve education infrastructure, provide support for at-risk students, and encourage greater involvement from the community and private sector in shaping the future of education. Last year, Chan allocated RM55,000 to reward 205 students in Kota Kinabalu who achieved excellent results in the 2023 SPM examination.

SARA aid helps Malaysians cope with rising living costs
ISKANDAR PUTERI: The expansion of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) or basic Rahmah contribution initiative, to benefit 5.4 million recipients, starting April 1, has been described as a blessing, particularly for low-income individuals, those who have lost their regular income, and others struggling with the rising cost of living. For 76-year-old Shaari Yahaya, a retired private sector employee, the SARA aid has been a significant help, especially with the rising cost of basic necessities, after being out of the workforce for decades. 'As a senior citizen who has been retired for a long time, I have no income and rely entirely on my children. 'This SARA aid is very meaningful to me because it allows me to buy essential items like milk, soy sauce, and more. Today, I'll first take a look at the items in the supermarket, then decide what to buy,' he said when met by Bernama. He added that the people hope such initiatives will continue and be further improved to assist more groups in need. Similarly, 38-year-old mother of three, including a set of twins, Izlaily Nurul Ain Hussein, said that although the SARA assistance of RM100 a month for a year may seem small, it still provides meaningful relief to recipients. She said she has not yet spent the assistance received since April, and has now accumulated RM300, which she plans to use for household items at the end of this month. 'SARA is not just financial assistance - it's a reflection of the government's concern for people in need. At first, I didn't know I was eligible for this aid, but after my husband checked and told me, I am very grateful,' she said. 'With twins and another five-year-old child, our family expenses have gone up. So the SARA aid has helped ease our monthly burden to some extent,' said the part-time private sector employee. Another recipient, 35-year-old Hafi, who preferred not to disclose his full name, said this was the first time he had received such assistance and described it as extremely helpful. 'I'm more comfortable accumulating the assistance over two or three months before spending it all at once. That way, I can buy essential items in larger quantities,' said Hafi, who works in the customer service sector and lives in Gelang Patah. Hafi added that the rising cost of living has forced him to be more frugal, and the SARA assistance has provided some relief in managing his monthly expenses. Previously, the MADANI Government announced the expansion of the SARA initiative to 5.4 million recipients starting April 1, an almost eightfold increase from the 700,000 beneficiaries previously.

Onn Hafiz: RTS Link achieves 50 per cent physical progress
JOHOR BARU: The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project has achieved 56 per cent physical progress as of June. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said it involves track construction, station development as well as system and train testing. "I am confident that all of this is a good start in elevating Johor as a major economic power in the region. "It also reflects the commitment of the state government together with the federal government and Singapore in building modern, efficient and safe infrastructure for the convenience of the people," he said in a Facebook post yesterday. Onn Hafiz said the RTS Link, which connects Bukit Chagar, here to Woodlands North, Singapore in just five minutes, will solve the problem of border congestion as well as strengthen Malaysia-Singapore relations and stimulate the regional economy. He said the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, was designed with high efficiency and is capable of carrying 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction and a frequency of 3.6 minutes during peak hours, thus being able to accommodate up to 180,000 passengers per day. Onn Hafiz together with Transport Minister Anthony Loke today witnessed the launch of the first RTS Link train in Singapore, which was also attended by Singapore's Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow and Singapore's Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. – BERNAMA
