— which demolished a Maoist 'bastion' in Karregutalu Hills (KGH) on Chhattisgarh-Telangana border — saw the force try out cave interventions for the first time, for the hills housed a network of 250 cave formations used by the Maoists as convenient hideouts, arms manufacturing units and to dump explosives and rations.
'CRPF has generally been doing house or vehicle interventions. For the first time, we tried cave interventions. We had use a technique and make sure that we do not suffer casualties but neutralise the Maoists who may be there,' he told a press conference here.
Singh said the forces also learnt that Naxals are now using beer bottles to make IEDs, which involve the minimum use of metal. 'This now requires ingenuity in detecting IEDs and we will be revising our SOPs accordingly,' he said.
Around 450 IEDs were detected and deactivated, though 15 IEDs that went off caused some injuries to force personnel. Singh said the force has been upgrading its IED detection equipment and technology to whatever is the latest available in the world.
The CRPF chief said the recovery of a whopping 818 barrel grande launcher shells (BGLs) and 450 IEDs during the operation is significant as most of the Maoist attacks on security camps so far were done using BGLs. 'Also, most of our personnel out on operations are killed or injured by IEDs,' said Singh.

Another Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Naxalites at the incident site was also recovered on Tuesday, he said. Security forces have launched an operation in the area to trace Naxalites involved in Monday's incident. He paid tribute to the deceased officer and said his sacrifice will not go in vain. He urged all security personnel across the Bastar Range to stay strong, determined and resilient. "We will not stop until Bastar is completely free from the grip of Naxalism. The sacrifice of Akash Rao and other martyrs will not go in vain. Their legacy will continue to inspire our mission for peace, prosperity and progress," he added. After the incident on Monday, a Bomb Detection and Disposal Team searched the entire site and recovered another pressure IED planted there and defused it, he said. The team also recovered the pressure IED components used in the incident and debris. An FIR has been lodged in connection with the incident at Konta Police Station and further investigation has been initiated, the official said. Security personnel have launched a search in the nearby areas to trace the Maoist cadres responsible for the incident. Stringent action will be taken against the perpetrators of this cowardly act, he said. Girepunje (42), who hailed from Raipur district, was recruited as deputy superintendent of police in 2013. He had been serving as ASP, Konta since March last year.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) said the end of Maoism is certain, as he laid wreath at the mortal remains of Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Rao Girepunje killed in an IED blast in Sukma district. The CM said Girepunje's sacrifice will not go in vain. Girepunje was killed and two officers were injured after the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Maoists exploded on Monday (June 9) in Sukma. Amid emotional chants of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' and 'Akash Rao Amar Rahe', wreaths were laid on Tuesday (June 10) at the police officer's mortal remains at the headquarters of the 4th battalion of Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) in Mana area in Raipur. Apart from CM Sai, Deputy CMs Vijay Sharma and Arun Sao, State Assembly Speaker Raman Singh, ministers, public representatives and senior administration and police officials were present at the wreath laying ceremony. Girepunje's family members, including his parents, his wife and two minor children, were also present. His 7-year-old son bowed at the mortal remains with folded hands, while a relative carried his 6-year-old daughter in his arms. 'We have lost a brave and committed officer. Maoists have committed the cowardly act out of frustration. Maoism is breathing its last and its end is certain,' CM Sai told reporters after being homage to Girepunje. The Chief Minister, deputy CMs, Raman Singh and other officials lent their shoulders to Girepunje's mortal remains while they were being put in a flower-decked mini-truck at the CAF premises. Earlier, the body, kept in a coffin, was taken from the police officer's residence in Kushalpur area to the CAF premises in the mini-truck. A huge crowd of people gathered on the road and chanted patriotic slogans. The mortal remains were later carried for last rites to Mahadev Ghat, with a large number of people joining the funeral procession.
