Proteas coach Shukri Conrad's contagious smile will be just a bit broader this week after David Bedingham returned from injury for his English County Championship side Durham.
The middle-order batter had fractured his toe at the start of the County season and was in a race against time to be fit for the Proteas' all-important World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's next month.
He was in the Durham squad for last week's match against Nottinghamshire, but had not yet been given the clearance from Cricket SA. However, after a six-week layoff, Bedingham played a full part in this past weekend's seven-wicket defeat to Somerset.

Versatile Proteas squad named for tough New Zealand and Australia tour

The 2025 Proteas squad that will travel to New Zealand and Australia, minus Sanmarie Visser, who is currently in Australia. Image: Netball South Africa National netball team coach Jenny van Dyk feels that the versatile players chosen to travel to New Zealand and Australia, to take on the two top-ranked sides in the world in September and October, will compensate for a lack of depth in some key positions. Van Dyk named the Spar Proteas squad for the daunting clashes on Monday. With the likes of Boitumelo Mahloko out injured and Syntiche Kabuya unavailable for selection, defenders Entle Futshane, Nozipho Ntshangase, and Juanita van Tonder join the squad for the first time after impressing in this season's Telkom Netball League. 📢 𝐒𝐐𝐔𝐀𝐃 𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 Meet your new SPAR Proteas squad — ready to fight, inspire, and wear the green & gold with pride. 🇿🇦 Now it's our turn to stand behind them. One team. One nation. One heartbeat. 💚💛 👉 #WeAreAllIn — Netball South Africa (@Netball_SA) August 11, 2025 Video Player is loading. Midcourt dynamo Khanyisa Chawane will continue to captain the side, which also includes the always-entertaining Kamogelo Maseko, the TNL Player of the Tournament Tarle Mathe, and top scorer in the Netball Super League this season, Rolene Streutker. 'For this tour we are well aware of the fact that we don't have the exact depth we've envisioned in one or two key positions yet, but we have very versatile players within our core group that can get the job done for this tour, and we have a plan in place to create the depth we need afterwards,' Van Dyk said. She explained that trials held in Johannesburg over the weekend were the final step in the selection process, allowing them the opportunity to test combinations between foreign- and local-based players. 'If you are going to take on the best in the world, you need players with experience, grit and a fierce fighting spirit, and we believe within our core group that is exactly what we have.' Assistant coach Zanele Mdodana said the tour is crucial in the build-up to both the Commonwealth Games and the next Netball World Cup. 'We are going to go full force into these Test matches with the objective of really sharpening ourselves, whil also gauging where we are compared to the professional teams in the world,' said Mdodana "We know that the players are fully aware as to what our objectives are and how we're going to go about achieving them. There's the Commonwealth Games next year, there's the World Cup in 2027, and everything that we're doing is aligning to ultimately assist us in achieving our objectives.' While the Proteas went down to the Aussie Diamonds in a series at the start of 2023, their last match against New Zealand's Silver Ferns was their memorable 48-all draw at the Netball World Cup on home soil in Cape Town, also in 2023.

Seema lauds Siwelele's winning start but urges more improvement

Coach Lehlohonolo Seema urges patience and improvement as Siwelele FC prepares for a tough away clash at Dobsonville Stadium after a confident Betway Premiership season opener. Photo; Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Siwelele FC coach Lehlohonolo Seema is pleased with how his side have started life in the Betway Premiership but warned that there is still a lot of work ahead. The team announced themselves in fine style with an impressive 3-1 victory over Golden Arrows at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in their season opener. Their next challenge takes them to Orbit College's temporary home at Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday (7.30 pm kick-off), as the North West-based outfit remains unable to use the Olympia Park Stadium for late matches due to ongoing floodlight repairs. Seema, making his return to the top flight after parting ways with Sekhukhune United midway through last season, was pleased with his team's performance but insisted there is still room for improvement ahead of the away trip. However, he was happy with his players' contributions. 'We are playing away from home on Tuesday, it's not going to be easy, no game will be easy,' Seema said. 'Everybody knows that we are the new kids on the block. We are not saying anything, the only thing is that we have to collect as many points as we can. 'Some of the things here we are still trying to find each other, the players are still trying to understand what I want. We have won, I am happy, but there is still a lot of things that did not go right. "We can keep the ball better and make better decisions. The goal we conceded was a soft goal, we need to defend better and make sure the opponent doesn't sniff any opportunities. 'The goals, the way they came, it was exactly how we wanted. Our transitions were better but there is still room to improve, but credit must go to the players.' A win is a good thing for your first ever game. Welcome to the PSL. — Mr President (@KG_ZA2025) August 10, 2025 Having bought the status of Supersport United, Siwelele took over several players from that squad who flew under the radar last season. With new surroundings and leadership, they have come alive as the team transitions from empty stadiums to potentially packed home venues this campaign. Vincent Pule and Siviwe Magidigidi were the stand-out performers, not only getting on the scoresheet but impressing throughout the contest. Despite still needing time to build a well-oiled team, Seema also called for consistency from his side, especially in home matches where they enjoy some of the strongest support in the country.

Netball SA ‘running smoothly' despite controversy, says Diale

A 15-member national squad was announced on Monday for an upcoming tour of New Zealand and Australia. With the sport facing controversy behind the scenes, Netball South Africa (NSA) acting president Mami Diale insists the players are not being affected as the national team gears up for two big series against the world's top-ranked sides over the next few months. In April, NSA president Cecilia Molokwane was suspended by World Netball, and though she was still indifinitely sidelined, it remained unclear why she was temporarily removed from her post. Diale said on Monday she could not provide any updates or information on Molokwane's situation, but she said NSA was ploughing ahead in her absence without any major hiccups. 'Netball has never stopped. The sport has been running through and through. We had a successful Telkom Netball League and a successful national championships where we had a lot of players who participated, along with our associate members, which is the schools,' Diale said. 'We are planning now for the (national) men's championships that will be happening from 31 August until 6 September, we have coaching workshops running throughout the country, and we have a partnership with Zimbabwe where we have committed as Netball South Africa to do development. 'So everything is running smoothly… and we are moving on, forwards and upwards.' Proteas gear up for tour Down Under Meanwhile, Proteas head coach Jenny van Dyk was eager to use the six Tests against New Zealand and Australia in September and October to prepare for next year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. 'This is a very important series for us to see exactly where we are at, playing against number one and two (Australia and New Zealand),' Van Dyk said after a 15-member national squad was announced for the tour Down Under. 'It's instrumental for us and I think the information we will get out of these six Test matches will definitely help us pinpoint all the work we need to get done with the Commonwealth Games in mind, leading into the (2027) World Cup.' A few players were unavailable for selection for the upcoming tour, including Karla Pretorius (taking a break at international level), Boitumelo Mahloko (injured) and Syntiche Kabuya, while U21 players were not considered as they were preparing for the World Youth Cup to be held in Gibraltar next month. In their absence, three uncapped players – defenders Entle Futshane, Nozipho Ntshangase and Juanita van Tonder – were called up. Proteas squad Khanyisa Chawane (c), Nichole Breedt, Entle Futshane, Kamogelo Maseko, Tarle Mathe, Owethu Ngubane, Refiloe Nketsa, Nozipho Ntshangase, Nicola Smith, Rolene Streutker, Elmeré van der Berg, Shadine van der Merwe, Juanita van Tonder, Jamie van Wyk, Sanmarie Visser
