New Texas tax relief bills could mean savings if voters approve in November

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Property tax relief could be on the way for some homeowners. Senate Bill 4 and Senate Bill 32, passed by Texas lawmakers, are designed to cut costs for homeowners across the state. Tyler Johnson is the Tom Green County Chief Appraiser. 'Senate Bill 4 is to increase the homestead exemption that a person qualifies for a property they own and occupy. It increases the school exemption of their tax bill…from $100,000 to $140,000. On top of that, if you have a disabled person or someone over 65 exemption in prior years has been $10,000 and it will be increased to $60,000,' Johnson said. The Texas Homestead Exemption is a tax break that reduces how much of your home's value is taxed. For many, that could mean several hundred dollars in savings a year. Recently, San Angelo voters approved a $397 million bond for San Angelo ISD, which increases the school district's tax rate for those with homes in the district. 'The entities that had bonds passed…those bonds could effect the amount of tax savings you see from the homestead exemption…so we won't know specifically how much the bon effects whatever tax savings come from the new legislation…but the legislation will help the overall increase a person would feel from the bonds that were passed,' Johnson said. Before any of this can happen, voters in Tom Green County and across the state would need to approve a constitutional amendment in November. The amendment would officially change the Texas Constitution to allow these exemptions to take effect. If passed, the changes would apply to this tax year, which means you could see it reflected in your 2025 property tax bill. 'Once it becomes law, the district will implement the new district amount. If you already qualify for a resident homestead, we will update our system to reflect the new exemption starting in September with the idea that if it passes, it will already be associated with the tax bill you receive for your property after Oct. 1st,' Johnson said. Small-business owners sue Trump administration over tariffs

(NewsNation) — A federal appeals court has reversed one of two rulings that block President Donald Trump's tariffs. A group of small-business owners sued the Trump administration over the tariffs, arguing that the president had overstepped his authority. The block was imposed by a New York-based court that handles trade cases before the block was lifted. Victor Schwartz, the owner of wine importer VOS Selections and one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, appeared on 'NewsNation Now' on Thursday to discuss the lawsuit and its impact on his business. Schwartz said the uncertainty surrounding tariffs has made managing his business 'very challenging.' Harvard-Trump court battle — and polarizing debate — continue Jeffrey Schwab, the attorney in the lawsuit, said the law Trump relied on to issue tariffs, the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (IEEPA), does not allow the president to impose his 'Liberation Day' tariffs. He added that the stay on the tariffs is only temporary while the appeal is reviewed. 'I knew even though I was so elated over the win, I knew it was not over,' Schwartz said. Many of Trump's other tariffs remain blocked under a separate ruling made by a federal judge in Washington, D.C. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Trump Pardons Tom Sandoval

WASHINGTON—As part of a flurry of legal actions in recent days that granted clemency to more than 25 people, President Donald Trump reportedly pardoned disgraced Bravo TV star Tom Sandoval this week. 'Thanks to President Trump, Tom Sandoval will finally be indemnified against all the toxic Vanderpump Rules drama,' said publicist Ashley Partington, adding that the 42-year-old musician and restaurateur was unfairly targeted for cheating on longtime girlfriend Ariana Madix with his co-star Raquel Leviss. 'The president understands that following your heart is not a crime, and he was willing to fight for Tom's right to cheat with 'Miami Girl' or to hook up with a bottle service waitress after absconding to Las Vegas. If anything, it's Team Ariana that should be punished. She was a total bitch and is clearly just using all the free publicity to push her merch.' At press time, Trump had announced plans to make the former site of Sandoval's failed bar Schwartz & Sandy's a national monument.
