He said that the role of the journalistic community is of vital importance in promoting a positive image of the country and fostering an informed society. He also added that the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees freedom of expression. He expressed these views on the eve of World Press Freedom Day, observed every year on 3rd under the auspices of the United Nations.
Sadiq also appreciated the important role played by journalists in the Press Gallery of the Parliament, who serve as a bridge between legislative proceedings and the general public. He highlighted the irreplaceable sacrifices offered by journalists in their quest to bring truth and facts to light. He further added that the media plays a fundamental role in shaping an educated, aware, and responsible society.
He commended the dedication of journalists who perform their duties in conflict zones, often at great personal risk. He paid rich tribute to journalists serving in Palestine, Indian-occupied Kashmir, and other war-torn regions, recognising their courage and professionalism. He expressed sadness over the alarming number of journalists who lose their lives each year while fulfilling their professional responsibilities, calling it a matter of grave concern.
He stressed the need for a collective and coordinated strategy to ensure the safety and protection of journalists in the line of duty. He reiterated that the Parliament of Pakistan is fully committed to upholding press freedom and is determined to enact effective legislation to safeguard the rights of the journalistic community. He said that the passage of the Right of Access to Information Act, 2017, as a significant step toward ensuring public access to information.
Highlighting the role of Pakistani media during recent Indian aggressive policies in the region, the speaker praised the journalistic community for demonstrating exceptional professionalism and patriotism. Through fact-based reporting, the media played a key role in revealing the true face of India to the international community, he said.
On this occasion, Deputy Speaker National Assembly Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah has affirmed Parliament's unwavering belief in freedom of expression and its commitment to ensuring that journalists have timely and accurate access to information.
He added that the National Assembly has consistently pursued legislation aimed at the protection and welfare of journalists.

NEW DELHI: Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Monday discussed border peace, trade issues and bilateral exchanges, aiming to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. 'We had productive conversations on our economic and trade issues, pilgrimages, people-to-people contacts, river data sharing, border trade, connectivity and bilateral exchanges,' Jaishankar said. He added that the discussions would contribute to building a stable, cooperative and forward-looking relationship between India and China. The Chinese foreign minister said exchanges and dialogue at all levels between both countries had been gradually restored and bilateral relations were returning to cooperation, a Chinese readout showed. Wang also urged both sides, as major countries, to set an example for other developing countries to unite and strengthen themselves, according to the statement. China and India should establish 'correct strategic understanding, regard each other as partners and opportunities, not as rivals or threats,' the statement cited Wang as saying. Wang arrived in the Indian capital on Monday for a two-day visit during which he will hold the 24th round of border talks with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier in the day, Jaishankar had said that discussing border issues was very important because the basis for any positive momentum in India-China ties was the ability to jointly maintain peace in border areas. 'Having seen a difficult period in our relationship, our two nations now seek to move ahead. This requires a candid and constructive approach from both sides,' Jaishankar told Wang in his opening remarks. It is also important for the two countries to pull back their troops amassed along their disputed border in the western Himalayas since a deadly border clash in 2020, Jaishankar said. China's top diplomat Wang arrives in India Wang's visit comes days before Modi travels to China - his first visit in seven years - to attend the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a regional political and security group that also includes Russia. Relations between the Asian giants began to thaw in October after New Delhi and Beijing reached a milestone pact to lower military tensions on their Himalayan border following talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Modi in Russia. Ties between the two countries deteriorated sharply following a military clash on that border in the summer of 2020 in which 20 soldiers from India and four from China were killed.

Wall Street equities were muted overnight ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole summit later this week, while Asian markets traded lower. 'Indian market is drawing strength from multiple positives such as the potential GST reforms, S&P upgrade and easing geopolitical nerves after the U.S.-Russia presidential meeting,' said Trivesh D, chief operating officer at Tradejini. Analysts warned that uncertainty surrounding India-U.S. trade talks, which could be delayed, may cap near-term gains.
