Delta flight forced to hit brakes when another jet lands on same runway

Yahoo4 days ago
Passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight from Mexico City to Atlanta experienced a jolt this week when the pilots were forced to hit the brakes before takeoff as another jet landed on the same runway, airline officials confirmed.
Delta flight 590 departed the gate at 7 a.m. local time on Monday, July 21, and was accelerating to takeoff at Benito Juárez Mexico City International Airport when the incident took place, according to Delta and information from theonline site Flight Aware, which tracks flight paths.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft had 144 passengers on board, including two pilots and four flight attendants, Delta spokesperson Morgan Durrant told USA TODAY.
The plane had just started to roll for takeoff when a regional Aeromexico jet flew over the Delta flight and landed in front of it on the same runway, forcing the Delta pilots to hit the brakes.
Aeromexico Flight 1691 arrived from the city of Aguascalientes, online tracking shows.
"As the flight crew was initiating the takeoff, they observed another aircraft landing in front of their aircraft on the same runway," Durrant said.
No injuries were reported.

Delta near-collision reported to FAA, NTSB
After taking on additional fuel and conferring with Delta safety and flight operations officials, the plane eventually departed for Atlanta at 9:42 a.m. local time and arrived at 3:20 p.m. ET, Durrant said.
'Because nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, Delta will fully cooperate with authorities as the circumstances around this flight are investigated," Delta released in a statement on Wednesday, July 23. "We appreciate the flight crew's actions to maintain situational awareness and act quickly."
According to Delta, the airline reported the incident to the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.
USA TODAY has reached out to both federal agencies.

Shreveport launches its fifth Block by Block sweep. What neighborhood is next?

The City of Shreveport announced Friday that the fifth Block by Block neighborhood swap will take place Saturday in Cedar Grove. The meet-up location will be A.B. Palmer Community Center, 547 East 79th St., at 8 a.m. Volunteers are encouraged to arrive before 8 a.m. to get set up with Shreveport Green. What are the scheduled sweeps? Aug. 2 − Cedar Grove Aug. 9 − Allendale Aug. 16 − Pines Road Aug. 23 − Stoner Road Sept. 6 − Southern Hills Sept. 13 − Mooretown Sept. 20 − Broadmoar What is the Block by Block Initiative? Block by Block is a neighborhood-based strategy to combat blight and revitalize distressed areas across Shreveport. The initiative is a result of an intensive planning and leadership effort led by a team of city and community leaders picked by Mayor Tom Arceneaux to participate in the Bloomberg Harvard City Leader Initiative — a global program that helps cities implement more effective public policy. According to a news release from the city, Shreveport was one of a limited number of U.S. cities chosen for the initiative. The Block by Block initiative focuses on targeting resources in high-need areas — one block at a time — rather than spreading efforts too thin, according to the news release. Each neighborhood will have a tailored improvement plan, with a full lifecycle tracking system for violations, abatements, legal actions, demolitions and redevelopment status. The news release said residents will play an essential role in helping to identify priorities, report issues and support neighborhood transformation. Residents are encouraged to take a moment and fill out the Block by Block Survey. Chicago woman billed more than $233,000 for water she never used in vacant home with no plumbing

A senior citizen's vacant home in the Back of the Yards neighborhood racked up a staggering $233,000 water bill, despite not having any plumbing for years. Diane Carli, 82, said the city of Chicago is threatening to garnish her pension, and she's looking for help because the Water Department isn't backing down on an outrageous bill she says is clearly an error. You don't need 20/20 vision to see this house in the Back of Yards neighborhood is abandoned. "It's gutted. … There's nothing in there," Carli said. It has sat vacant for years, with no plumbing. Diane inherited the childhood property of her late husband in 2017. In December 2024, the city contacted her, telling her a new water meter needed to be installed. "Why would you need to come in when there's no water there, and I'm not asking for water," she said. She allowed the city to install a meter, and within six months she got a water bill that was out of this world. "I said, 'A bill for what?' And they said for water," she said. Despite the vacant home having no plumbing, she's been billed for $233,439.90 since the city installed the meter. "This is unbelievable. This is totally wrong," she said. After the meter was installed, the Water Department said she used more than 500,000 gallons. They have placed her account in collections, and threatened to garnish her pension. "I'm slow, I'm dumb, whatever you want to call me, but it's going to take an Einstein to figure this s*** out. I don't care what you say," she said. Her daughter, Lisa, went to City Hall to fight the bill, with no luck. "As soon as you touched our property and made entry into our property, now we have water bill of $233,000," Lisa said. The family turned to Ald. Raymond Lopez (15th) for help, but he couldn't get the Water Department to back down. "The most we got was yesterday, they said, 'Well, we'll take off $25,000 in penalties for late charges,'" he said. "I've never in my lifetime seen a bill like that," Diane said. For years, CBS News Chicago has uncovered countless Chicagoans who all got hosed by outrageous bills for water they never used, and it continues. "One would think that, after six years of seeing your stories on Getting Hosed, people within the Water Department, people within the Law Department, and people within Finance would understands mistakes happen," Lopez said. "They're going to put me in the grave with this, because what do I do?" Diane said. The city recently came back and replaced Diane's water meter, which is registering zero water usage. Lopez and the family are fighting the city to eliminate the entire bill. Diane is far from alone with her wate bill woes. For years, CBS News Chicago has reported on this issue with our Getting Hosed series, leading to the Chicago City Council approving a water bill relief program last year.
