Umrao Jaan screening: Rekha adorably kisses AR Rahman, dances with Anil Kapoor; Aamir Khan, Hema Malini grace red carpet
Ahead of its re-release, the makers of Umrao Jaan hosted a special screening in Mumbai on Thursday night. Many celebrities, including Anil Kapoor, Aamir Khan, AR Rahman and Hema Malini, graced the red carpet and posed with the star of the night, Rekha. The veteran actor was dressed in an ivory and gold outfit, along with traditional jewellery.
At the Umrao Jaan screening, Rekha performed her signature dance steps while posing solo for the paparazzi. After Anil Kapoor greeted her with folded hands and a warm hug, she twirled and danced with him. 'Dream Girl' Hema Malini was also spotted on the red carpet in a beautiful plum silk saree. Rekha also shared a sweet moment with the paparazzi, gracefully posing with them at the event.

Another highlight of the screening was Rekha dropping a gentle kiss on music composer AR Rahman's cheek. Other celebrities who posed for the paps on the red carpet included Asha Bhosle with her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle, Tabu, Johny Lever, and Mira Rajput Kapoor.

Rekha won a National Award for her performance in the 1981 musical drama Umrao Jaan. Looking back at her performance, director Muzaffar Ali told SCREEN, 'She had to prepare on many levels—language, singing, dancing. Yes, there were people to guide her, but she performed beyond expectations. Working with her was a gift because this film is woven from quiet emotions. And it takes an actor like her to absorb those feelings and translate them onto the screen.'
Umrao Jaan also starred Farooq Shaikh, Naseeruddin Shah, and Raj Babbar in pivotal roles.
