Boeing Starts Flying New Planes Into China During Lull In Trade War

Yahoo12 hours ago

On June 9, 2025, a plane landed in China. That's actually a pretty big deal. Specifically, a brand new Boeing 737 MAX 8 landed in Zhoushan, the site of the American planemaker's completion center for the country. According to Reuters, it's the first new plane to do so since April, when U.S. President Donald Trump raised tariffs on China to a whopping 145%, and China then retaliated with 125% tariffs of its own.
That would make new planes, which aren't exactly cheap in the first place, prohibitively expensive. And even if Chinese airlines wanted to eat the costs, they were apparently legally prohibited, too, after Beijing put out a directive to stop buying American-made planes altogether. Call it air-to-air combat in the trade war.
However, after negotiations in May, tariffs were dropped to (a still historically high) 30% by the U.S. and 10% by China. This lull in the trade war seems to have assuaged Chinese authorities enough to allow plane deliveries to resume.

This particular 737 MAX, N230BE, might be feeling a bit of déjà vu, because it actually flew to Zhoushan back in April, just before tariffs started hitting triple digits. Painted in the livery of Xiamen Airlines, it was probably getting finished for delivery at Boeing's completion center at the airport when the legal problems started. Unable to actually give the plane to the client, Boeing flew it and several other planes all the way the way back to Seattle with no clear path ahead.
However, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg had already indicated in May that China looked like it was getting ready to accept American planes again. This 737 MAX is the first indication that hand-offs to clients are set to begin again. That's good news for Boeing, which has been beset by problems over the last few years, including issues with the 737 MAX aircrafts themselves.
How long this lull in the trade war lasts remains to be seen. The current tariff rates, set during the negotiations in May, are only meant to last for 90 days. A new round of negotiations are underway in London right now, but if they're not successful, 145% tariffs could rear their ugly heads again soon. If they do, expect whichever planes haven't been delivered to have to make the flight of shame back to Seattle again.

Israel Fights Also for Us

When a society can no longer distinguish between good and evil, between victim and perpetrator, it gives up. This dynamic is one of the great constants of human history. It is a lesson people in free societies — and people in totalitarian societies who yearn to be free — should keep in mind during the climactic showdown underway in the Middle East. Israel has struck a blow to prevent Iran from developing nuclear bombs — weapons that it might credibly use toward its stated goal of removing Israel from the planet. Make no mistake: This is not simply a matter of regional security. Nor should it be a proxy for whether one supports or opposes the current Israeli government's policy on Gaza or other subjects. This conflict is a central front in a global contest in which the forces of tyranny and violence in recent years have been gaining ground against the forces of freedom, which too often are demoralized and divided. In a world full of bad actors, Iran is the most aggressive and dangerous totalitarian force of our time. Its leaders seek to weaken and destroy free society, democracy and human rights with Russian and Chinese support. In Iran, women are systematically oppressed and abused. Homosexuals are murdered. Those who think differently are imprisoned and tortured. In Tehran, the cynical abuse of the civilian population in Gaza as human shields is also cold-bloodedly conceived and financed. According to official state doctrine, the primary goal of the mullahs in Tehran is the annihilation of the State of Israel. Ayatollah Khamenei has described Israel as a 'cancerous tumor.' And clocks in the streets of Tehran celebrate countdowns to the 'destruction of Israel.' But Israel is only the first target. Once Israel falls, Europe and America will be the focus. Radical Sunni and Shiite Islamism has been preparing for this for decades. The fatwa against Salman Rushdie, 9/11, the attacks in Paris, the caliphate of ISIS — each event was a warning sign. Only those who did not want to see the signs are surprised today. The attacks are directed against our values, our way of life. It is therefore surprising that Israel is not being celebrated worldwide for its historic, extremely precise and necessary strike against Iranian nuclear weapons facilities and for the targeted killing of leading terrorists, but that the public response is dominated by anti-Israel propaganda. The intelligence and precision of Israel's actions are not admired but are instead used here and there to perpetuate blatantly antisemitic stereotypes. This attitude is characterized not only by racist undertones, but also by a strange self-forgetfulness. If the perpetrator-victim reversal that has been repeatedly observed since Oct. 7 applies even in the most obvious case — Iran — then this can only be interpreted to mean that we are in the process of losing the culture war, which in reality has long since become a war of civilizations. And we seem to have no problem with that. It is what Michel Houellebecq called 'submission' in his visionary novel 10 years ago. As someone who has 40 years' experience as a journalist and publishing executive, I believe every government should be questioned critically about all the details of its policies — above all on matters of war and its consequences. But those details should not be allowed to obscure larger historical truths. Perhaps a German of my generation has a useful vantage point. Born in 1963, I grew up in a country and continent still shadowed by World War II and its crimes, including an effort by Germany to eradicate Jews across Europe. The first half of my journalism career saw freedom on the march. The Soviet Union collapsed, authoritarian governments across Eastern Europe were routed, Germany was reunited under democracy. The second half of my career, however, with authoritarianism on the rise in all directions — with governments hostile to the very idea of journalism, as well as democracy, pluralism, rule of law and basic standards of decency. These unwelcome developments highlighted how fragile the triumphs of the late 20th century may be in the 21st. The contest between free societies and murderous tyrants is enduring. That's why warnings of dangerous escalation that can be heard from politicians in the West are particularly misplaced. The argument is as stale as it is false. Those warning of escalation are to blame for Vladimir Putin being on the verge of winning his terrible war of conquest in Ukraine. And those warning of escalation are to blame for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. This could have been prevented with decisive resistance from the West in the first days of the attack. Dictators decide for themselves when to escalate. Usually when they do not encounter enough strength and resistance. This also applies to Iran. If Israel does not achieve its goals — destruction of the nuclear facilities, maximum weakening of the terrorist regime and, ideally, the removal of the mullahs — the world will quickly look very different. China will seize this historic opportunity to annex Taiwan sooner than expected. Largely without resistance. The moment is favorable. Because America and Europe cannot win a three-front war and therefore cannot fight it. But if the anti-democratic triangle — China, Russia, Iran — succeeds in this coup, a different, non-democratic world order will prevail. That is why America and Europe, in their own interests alone, must stand united with Israel and do everything in their power to ensure that this historic liberation is achieved. This morning, my son asked me a question: 'In the near future, will Israel become more like us, living in peace, or will we become more like Israel?' It depends. It depends on us.

Trump Just Disclosed Earning $57.4 Million From World Liberty Financial—Here's What We Know

President Donald Trump earned $57.4 million from World Liberty Financial, a crypto company he partially owns—as his administration advances policies aimed at boosting the industry—according to a financial disclosure released Friday. President Donald Trump is the 'inspiration' for World Liberty Financial, a decentralized finance ... More platform. Trump is listed as the chief crypto advocate and 'inspiration' for World Liberty Financial, a decentralized finance platform launched in September 2024 with the involvement of his three sons. The company sells a nontransferable token, $WLFI, which allows holders to propose and vote on rule changes. World Liberty Financial earns revenue through token sales and products like USD1, a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar. Trump and his family control about 60% of the company through an LLC that holds 22.5 billion $WLFI tokens and is entitled to 75% of the proceeds from token sales, according to the website's fine print. Spokespeople for the White House, Trump Organization and World Liberty Financial did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Trump can earn income from his businesses while in office through the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, the same structure he used during his first term. He is the trust's sole donor and beneficiary. Donald Trump Jr. serves as the trustee, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. As president, Trump has vowed to make the U.S. the 'crypto capital of the world'—a stance that aligns with his growing personal investments in digital assets. Decentralized finance, or DeFi, refers to blockchain-based platforms like World Liberty Financial that let users lend, borrow and trade assets without relying on traditional banks. These platforms often attract users who lack access to banking, want faster transaction speeds or seek to avoid regulation by financial institutions. A stablecoin—such as World Liberty Financial's USD1—is a cryptocurrency whose value is pegged to a traditional asset, like the U.S. dollar. Stablecoin issuers typically profit by investing users' deposits and keeping any earnings. Like DeFi platforms, they appeal to users looking for alternatives to conventional finance. $2 billion: The amount World Liberty Financial co-founder Zach Witkoff said that MGX, a UAE-backed fund, would invest in the crypto exchange Binance using the USD1 stablecoin (Binance is not affiliated with Trump). Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., accused World Liberty Financial of serving as 'a staggering vehicle for corruption' regarding the MGX deal. 'By using USD1 to finance the MGX-Binance deal, a foreign government backed entity and a foreign corporation that pleaded guilty to criminal violations of U.S. anti-money laundering and sanctions laws are effectively cutting the Trump and Witkoff families into the deal to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.' An ethics white paper the Trump Organization released in January noted the Constitution does not bar a president from owning, operating or managing a private business. But to 'avoid even the appearance of any conflict,' the company said it hired an outside ethics adviser and Trump pledged to continue to keep his assets in a trust and not manage the company directly. (The Trump Organization, however, has since fired that adviser at Trump's instruction.) Trump's support for World Liberty Financial is already being used to bolster the company's global credibility—and possibly help attract business from foreign governments. When Pakistan's government announced a partnership between the firm and its national crypto council, it said in a press release, 'World Liberty Financial is backed by the Trump family, including President Donald Trump and his sons—Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Barron Trump. President Trump has personally endorsed WLF.' A group of nine Senate Democrats pulled their support for a crypto-friendly bill in early May, citing conflict-of-interest concerns over World Liberty Financial's business ties with the Emirati-backed firm, according to The New York Times. They later introduced the End Crypto Corruption Act, which would ban presidents and other officials from 'issuing, endorsing or sponsoring crypto assets.' The courts never ruled during Trump's first term whether a foreign government paying the president through one of his businesses violated the Constitution's emoluments clause, which prohibits government officials from accepting 'any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State' without the consent of Congress. In fact, the courts never even settled who had legal standing to bring such a case—leaving one of the most consequential constitutional questions of Trump's presidency unresolved. Trump's embrace of crypto is a 180 from his position in 2021, when he told Fox Business, 'I don't think we should have all of the bitcoins of the world out there. I think they should regulate them very very high.' Chinese blockchain entrepreneur Justin Sun invested $30 million in World Liberty Financial tokens just weeks after Trump's election. Soon after Trump's inauguration, the SEC asked a judge to pause its fraud case against Sun to 'explore a potential resolution.'
