AFC CL Elite and Two draws to be held today
AFC/TNN Doha Asia's finest clubs will learn their paths to continental glory today when the league stage draw for the AFC Champions League Elite (ACL Elite) 2025-26 takes place at the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur. Following the resounding success of the rebranded 2024/25 season, the prestigious competition is set to deliver another edition of thrilling matchups. The draw will feature 24 elite clubs, with the League Stage scheduled to kick off on September 15. Representing Qatar are Qatar Stars League champions Al Sadd, Amir Cup winners Al Gharafa, and Al Duhail, who sealed their place with a decisive victory over Iran's Sepahan SC on Tuesday. Defending champions Al Ahli Saudi FC, who lifted their maiden ACL Elite trophy in May, will return with sights firmly set on back-to-back titles. The Saudi giants are among five former champions in the draw, alongside three debutants: Korea Republic's Gangwon FC, Japan's FC Machida Zelvia, and China PR's Chengdu Rongcheng FC. As Asia's top-tier club tournament returns for its 23rd edition, all eyes are on the draw - the first step on the road to continental supremacy. Meanwhile, the draw for the AFC Champions League Two(ACL Two) 2025-26 will also take place today in Kuala Lumpur, with 32 teams set to discover their Group Stage opponents. The competition, which kicks off on September 16 in a home-and-away round-robin format, will spotlight some of Asia's emerging clubs from 22 Member Associations. PFC Andijon (Uzbekistan) and Cong An Ha Noi FC (Vietnam) are set to make their debut appearances in the Group Stage of an AFC competition, while Al Muharraq SC (Bahrain) stand out as the only former champions in the field. Qatar will be represented by Al Ahli, who secured qualification after finishing fourth in the QSL last season. FC Goa's maiden qualification Captain Sandesh Jhingan sees FC Goa's success in reaching the AFC Champions League Two as the perfect reward for the Indian club's desire to climb to greater heights. Qualification into the group stage was achieved on Wednesday thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 win against Al Seeb Club where the Oman side threatened to stage a comeback and scupper FC Goa's hopes of continental football for the first time since 2021. 'We are very happy with the win,' said Jhingan. Dejan Drazic put FC Goa ahead in the 24th minute before Javier Siverio doubled their advantage eight minutes into the restart, with Nasser Al Rawahi's goal for Al Seeb on the hour mark. FC Goa will now go into Friday's draw as the second representative from India with Mohun Bagan Super Giant also in the mix and Jhingan believes that the entire club deserve their place in Asia.

Guedes, Omar steal show as Al Rayyan and Al Shamal make winning starts
Tribune News Network Doha Al Rayyan and Al Shamal made a winning starts to their campaign in 2025-2026 season of Qatar Stars League on Thursday. While Al Rayyan scored a 3-1 comeback victory against promoted side and last season's Second Division champions Al Sailiya, Al Shamal prevailed 2-0 over Al Ahli. It was the Brazilian Roger Guedes struck two goals for Al Rayyan at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, scoring one from the spot in the 82nd minute before putting the icing on the cake in the 90th minute following a defensive error in a highly-entertaining encounter. Earlier, Hadi Ali registered the first goal of the season for Al Sailiya in the 20th minute to set the tone before an unmarked Julien de Sart rifled home a belter, inches from the edge of the 25-yard box in the 68th minute to restore parity for Al Rayyan, who were earlier denied a penalty call via VAR decision in the 25th minute. The win will doubtlessly serve as a morale booster for Portuguese coach Artur Jorge's men, who had finished the last season in fifth place, while Al Sailiya, who are experiencing a new lease of life in the top division, will be now aiming to bounce back in their next match. Omar stars for Al Shamal In the late evening clash, Al Shamal's 21-year-old Mohammed Rafiq Omar starred with a goal and an assist as the side beat Al Ahli 2-0 at the Khalifa International Stadium. Omar scored in the 88th minute while Mohamed Manai struck earlier in the 40th minute with a fine side flick. It was a delightful first win of the new season for Al Shamal, who had finished sixth in the previous season while Al Ahli were fourth. Al Shamal broke past Al Ahli's defence first in the opening half as Omar worked his way past defenders before providing Manai, also 21, with a perfect ball. Stationed near the left post, Manai caught the cross making a right-foot flick into the net past a hapless Al Ahli goalkeeper Yazan Naim. Al Shamal had earlier scored in the 17th minute but unsuccessfully when Omar had made a breakaway to move in and strike but the goal was ruled out by VAR for off-side. Omar however hit back late in the second session as he latched on to a defensive lapse to dash in, and with a cool head dribbled past the goalkeeper and a chasing defender to make it 2-0. Al Ahli had their moments but weren't forceful enough. An in dipping free kick from Julian Draxler was cut off by Al Shamal goalkeeper Babacar Seck in the 68th minute, who had a good evening under the bar. On Friday, Al Arabi will meet Al Wakrah while Al Gharafa will play Umm Salal. Al Arabi and Al Wakrah will face-off at the Al Thumama Stadium at 6.30pm and the match is expected to generate a lot of Arabi are under Spanish coach Pablo Amowhile Al Wakrah are under the leadership of their new Spanish coach Vicente Moreno. Dazzling players to be on show as Doha Bank Stars League set for exciting start
Tribune News Network Doha The Doha Stars League is all set for grand kick-off on Thursday, unveiling the arrival of many new stars in the squads of the twelve teams. Al Rayyan will meet Al Sailiya in the first match of the opening day at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium at 6.30pm. Among the marquee signings during the transfer window have been the arrivals of Brazilian Roberto Firmino from Saudi Arabia's Al Ahli, Spanish midfielder Pau Prim from Barcelona, and Uruguayan midfielder Agustín Soria – all for Al Sadd. Al Duhail have already welcomed Brazilian Lucas Silva Melo 'Tuta', Polish striker Krzysztof Piatek and Algerian star Adel Boulbina. Al Arabi have acquired Spanish defender Javier Hernandez from Spanish club Leganes, and Jordan Veretout from Olympique Lyonnais; Al Wakrah have signed Moroccan defender Amin Zahzouh and Spanish striker Raúl de Tomas from Rayo Vallecano; Al Rayyan have signed Brazilian midfielder Gregory da Silva from Brazil's Botafogo; Umm Salal have included Moroccan defender Adil Tahif from RS Berkane; Al Ahli have brought in Moroccan defender Ayoub Amraoui from OGC Nice; while Al Gharafa have bagged Mason Holgate from Everton. These are among the many more new players in the QSL teams to add to the previously playing overseas stars. There are also many new coaches with the much experienced Djamel Belmadi now guiding Al Duhail. Al Rayyan will kick off their 2025-2026 season against Al Sailiya in the first match of the competition. Al Rayyan, under Portuguese coach Artur Jorge, aim for a robust start. This is particularly relevant following the recent enhancements to their roster, including Brazilian midfielder Gregory da Silva, goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada and defender Bahaa Ellethy. The team features several prominent players, especially last season's league top-scorer Roger Guedes, who is expected to play a crucial role for the Lions this time as well. Al Sailiya, the newly-promoted Second Division champions, approach the match under coach Mirghani Al Zain and are eager to establish their presence. They have bolstered their line-up with notable talents, including Norwegian Mathias Normann, Dutchman Kylian van der Vaart, Tunisian Youssef Snana and Argentinian defender Matias Nani, and they are looking to catch their hosts off guard right from the start. Speaking on eve of the clash, Al Zain said, 'Our preparations are good and we aspire to present an image that reflects the team's ability to compete this season. We realize that the match will not be easy, but we will strive to deliver a performance worthy of Al Sailiya club.' Al Rayyan coach Artur Jorge, said, 'The start is always tough, but I'm very pleased with the team's performance during the training camp. Everyone is ready for the league opener, and our goal is clear — securing the three points for a strong start.' He added: 'Everyone is ready except for Amid Mahajna and Rodrigo Moreno. The training camp was wonderful, as we worked for 21 days. It was an important period for us to develop the team and integrate the new players. We only missed the international players during this training camp, as they joined in the last three days, especially the new players.' In the other match of Thursday, Al Shamal play Al Ahli at the Khalifa International Stadium at 8.30pm. On Friday, Al Arabi take on Al Wakrah at the Al Thumama Stadium at 6.30pm while Al Gharafa and Umm Salal will match up at Al Bayt Stadium at 8.30pm. On Saturday, defending champions Al Sadd will open against Qatar SC at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium at 8.30pm, while last season's runners-up Al Duhail will meet Al Shahania at 6.30pm at Khalifa International Stadium. Al Sadd, guided by Spaniard Felix Sanchez, aim to initiate the season robustly. The Wolves triumphed in the Al Ahrar Cup by beating Morocco's Wydad Casablanca in a penalty shoot-out 5-4 following a 1-1 stalemate in regulation time. Qatar SC are expected to be a formidable adversary considering the preparedness of the majority of their players. They are eager to deliver a commendable performance against Al Sadd under new coach Marquez Lopez, the former Al Wakrah coach, who has enjoyed significant success with the Qatar national team, steering Al Annabi to triumph in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. Recently, The Kings bolstered their line-up with several new additions, most notably Senegalese Serigne Diouf, Comoros player Faiz Selemani, Argentinian defender Francesco Russo, Czech midfielder Lukas Kalvach, Brazilian striker Joao Pedro and Qatar our national team striker Ahmed Al Rawi. Al Duhail, who on Tuesday made it to the AFC Champions League Elite beating Iran's Sepahan FC 3-2 will look to start the league strongly against Al Shahania, who will approach the match with Spanish coach Santi Denia at the helm, who previously managed the Spanish U-21 national team and has officially signed a two-year contract. His objective is to secure a favourable outcome against the formidable title contenders. Al Shahania recognize the challenges posed by a strong and talented opponent, yet they are relying on new signings such as Spaniard Alvaro Sanz Catalan and defender Jawad El Jemili to achieve a positive result that will bolster their confidence in the weeks ahead.
