
Acquiring multidisciplinary skills for expanding career opportunities is important, say experts
Experts on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) emphasised the importance of acquiring multidisciplinary skills for expanding career opportunities and world views, building character, and fostering empathy and intellectual humility.
They were speaking at a webinar on 'Beyond Boundaries: How Multidisciplinary Learning Prepares for a Complex World', organised jointly by the SRM Institute of Science and Technology and The Hindu.
Vinay Kumar, Pro Vice-Chancellor at SRM Institute of Technology, said the National Education Policy has provided the biggest fillip to multidisciplinary education in India. 'While multidisciplinary education is still in the developmental stage and not fully evolved, every institution is coming up with its own method of providing multidisciplinary courses,' he said. Such education also expands employment opportunities, as companies look for interns and workers with different kinds of problem-solving skills and abilities, he added.
Aruna Sankaranarayanan, Visiting Faculty at the School of Education, Azim Premji University, said disciplinary boundaries are artificial. Stating that there are commonalities between disciplines that seem disparate on the surface, she gave the example of mathematics and art. 'Both deal with shapes, sizes, symmetry and proportion,' she said. She spoke of how people with multi-disciplinary skill sets have succeeded in their careers.
'Venki Ramakrishnan did a Ph.D. in physics, moved to biology, and finally won a Nobel Prize in chemistry. Similarly, Steve Jobs pursued a course in calligraphy, which later helped him design the logo of the Macintosh interface,' she said.
On whether online learning and distance education can help students pick up multidisciplinary courses, Ms. Sankaranarayanan said that while online courses are useful, not many institutions may be offering multi-disciplinary courses online. Mr. Kumar agreed that online education has limited programmes. He said that distance programmes exist but may not be guided.

844 teachers promoted in Haryana
Haryana education minister Mahipal Dhanda said on Wednesday that the state government has promoted 844 teachers, including four to the position of principal, in what is a step to further improve the standard of education in government schools. The minister said that the promotions to the rank of block education officers (BEOs) and district education officers (DEOs) will also be done soon and that teacher transfers will be started shortly. Dhanda said that 35 chemistry teachers and 18 trained graduate teachers (TGTs) have been promoted as post graduate teachers (PGTs), while one PGT each of Sanskrit and English, and two of Hindi have been promoted to the post of principal. Similarly, four commerce teachers, 207 English teachers, one of Geography, History (203), Political Science (137), Sociology (13), Sanskrit (150), Home Science (37), Hindi (35) have been promoted from TGT to PGT, said the education minister. Dhanda stated that the government has completed infrastructural development in every government school across the state, and other issues will also be resolved soon. He said that under the National Education Policy, new curricula are being developed to equip students to face challenges effectively. He said that in different phases, a transfer drive for all categories of teachers will be started soon. Dhanda said that a new Model Sanskriti School will be opened within every 10 km radius so that students can have access to improved education. The present state government envisions setting up e-libraries for students in government schools. In line with this vision, e-libraries will be established in 197 Government Model Sanskriti Schools and 250 PM SHRI schools, he said.

IIT-BHU's new UG curriculum offers more flexibility
Varanasi: The IIT-BHU has announced significant changes in its B Tech curriculum to align with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, offering more flexibility and opportunities. The changes will be implemented from academic session 2025-26. Dean (academic affairs) prof Devendra Singh said that from the fourth semester onwards, students will have five academic pathways to choose from, based on merit and their preferences. From the fifth semester, BTech students with a minor can take 4-6 courses in another discipline while BTech students can complete a second major alongside their primary major, extending the program to 10 semesters. BTech students can complete under IDD, extending the program to 10 semesters. A student enrolled in a four-year BTech program can earn a minor degree by completing a minimum of four and a maximum of six courses in another engineering discipline during the fifth, seventh, and eighth semesters. About the BTech second major, he said that a student who initially pursued a Minor and then completes the 10-semester curriculum in the second discipline will earn a Second Major degree, effectively graduating with degrees in two engineering disciplines. Students who initially opt for a Minor can later switch to the Second Major track based on seat availability and merit. Associate dean (academic) Prof Indrajit Sinha highlighted that students can also earn the Integrated Dual Degree program for BTech and MTech degree in a single discipline within 10 semesters. Architecture (B Arch) students in the five-year program are also eligible for the Minor and Second Major options, with the latter extending the program to six years. tnn Prof Singh elaborated that the traditional branch-change system after the first year has been discontinued. Instead, students can diversify by adding a Minor or Second Major without changing their primary branch. He also noted that the sixth semester of every B Tech program has been earmarked for industrial or research internships, giving students hands-on experience and stronger industry connections. IIT (BHU) has also implemented a Multiple Exit Framework, which allows students to exit the programme at different stages based on earned credits. Prof Singh further shared that the institute has launched an MTech programme in Medical Devices to bridge engineering and healthcare. Additionally, AI-based industry-focussed courses are being launched in collaboration with the Saras AI Institute, and a standards-focused course is proposed in partnership with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Director of IIT (BHU) Prof Amit Patra emphasized that the new curriculum promotes holistic education and interdisciplinary dialogue, giving students the freedom to tailor their academic journey while ensuring a strong foundation in their core discipline. He stated, "This curriculum is a major step towards nurturing graduates who are not only academically strong but also socially conscious and industry-ready, keeping pace with modern-day requirements. "

Somanath is Chanakya University chancellor
Bengaluru: Former Indian Space Research Organisation ( ) chairman S Somanath will take over as chancellor of Chanakya University, a private university based in Devanahalli. Somanath will replace founder-chancellor MK Sridhar, who was part of the core committee developing National Education Policy (NEP). Sridhar will continue to be a part of the board of governors. Chanakya University started in 2022 through a state legislature act.
