
Global airlines to address trade war, net-zero uncertainties at annual summit
An unpredictable trade war and daunting environmental targets are on the agenda for global airline bosses at an annual summit in India, as the industry addresses concerns that geopolitical uncertainty will dent strong travel demand and raise costs.
More people are flying than ever before after a full post-pandemic passenger market recovery, but airlines globally are facing rising cost pressures, extended plane delivery delays, supply chain bottlenecks and a setback in recently strong fares.
On top of this, U.S. President Donald Trump's evolving trade war has upended the aerospace industry's decades-old tariff-free status and added a new layer of volatility, analysts say.
While carriers in Europe and Asia report strong demand for flying, the U.S. sector has been hit by a recent slump in travel demand, with carriers struggling to forecast passenger behavior and operational costs.
"You can't say that a fall-off in consumer confidence and higher inflation are not going to mean less money in the wallet for people to spend," Aengus Kelly, CEO of AerCap, the world's largest aircraft leasing company, told Reuters.
For now, airlines are filling planes but there are questions over the widely watched yield — or average fare per seat sold — they are able to charge as they tweak fares to fill cabins.
Many, however, are also being cushioned from the worst effects of demand by a fall in fuel prices and a decline in the U.S. dollar's value.
"Those tailwinds have insulated airlines, to date, from the worst effects" of demand, Kelly said.
The influential International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents more than 300 airlines and over 80% of global air traffic, will hold its annual three-day meeting from Sunday in New Delhi.
The summit, hosted by India's largest carrier IndiGo, comes as the world's third-largest air passenger market rapidly expands its aviation industry, and as air travel growth in Asia is expected to outstrip Europe and North America for the next few decades.
India's recent hostilities with neighbor Pakistan, which is causing Indian airlines to take large, expensive detours around Pakistani airspace, highlight how conflict zones are an increasing burden on airline operations and profitability.
IATA said in February that accidents and incidents related to conflict zones are a top concern for aviation safety requiring urgent global coordination.
Aviation safety will also be in focus after a spate of air accidents in Kazakhstan, South Korea and North America over the past six months, and rising concerns about air traffic control systems in the United States.
IATA has increasingly been warning that airlines will struggle to meet their sustainability goals, and that it is not clear how the transition to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and new technologies will be financed.
The broader aviation sector agreed in 2021 to target net-zero emissions in 2050 based mainly on a gradual switch to SAF, which is made from waste oil and biomass and costs more than conventional jet fuel.
IATA Director General Willie Walsh has in recent weeks said the industry will need to re-evaluate the commitment, though no change to industry goals is expected at the New Delhi event.
Airlines are at odds with energy companies over scarce supplies of SAF, while also pointing the finger at Airbus and Boeing over delays in delivering more fuel-efficient jets.
Governments are also likely to get some flak when Walsh delivers an often punchy address to airline bosses on Monday.
"Demand for SAF continues to outstrip supply and costs remain prohibitively high. Regulatory frameworks to encourage SAF production are still underdeveloped, inconsistent, or insufficient," said Subhas Menon, director general of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines.

The Trump administration is fighting to pause a second court ruling that blocked President Donald Trump's sweeping and so-called reciprocal tariffs, the signature economic policy of his second term. Economists also seemed to share this view that the steep tariffs were more a negotiating tactic than an espousal of actual policy, which they noted in a series of interviews last week with Fox News Digital. Trump Tariff Plan Faces Uncertain Future As Court Battles Intensify The bottom line for the Trump administration "is that they need to get back to a place [where] they are using these huge reciprocal tariffs and all of that as a negotiating tactic," William Cline, an economist and senior fellow emeritus at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, said in an interview. Cline noted that this was the framework previously laid out by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who had embraced the tariffs as more of an opening salvo for future trade talks, including between the U.S. and China. "I think the thing to keep in mind there is that Trump and Vance have this view that tariffs are beautiful because they will restore America's Rust Belt jobs and that they'll collect money while they're doing it, which will contribute to fiscal growth," said Cline, the former deputy managing director and chief economist of the Institute of International Finance. (Reuters) -Paramount Global nominated three new directors on Monday, seeking to boost its board strength to seven as it awaits regulatory approval for its $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media. Canada must fend off Donald Trump with ‘nation-building projects,' Mark Carney says
SASKATOON — Prime Minister Mark Carney says the threat posed by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs means Canadians must rally behind 'nation-building projects' to boost the economy. Speaking at a first ministers' meeting Monday , Carney praised the premiers for working together to eliminate interprovincial trade barriers and said he was 'confident' they can find consensus on what to build and where to build it. 'I can't keep up with the flurry of announcements of free trade agreements between provinces and across the country,' the prime minister told them, referring to Ontario's deals with Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. 'The federal government will do its part tabling legislation very shortly to eliminate federal barriers to prevent the movement of goods and people (by July 1), and also to put in place an ability to advance projects of national interest,' he said. 'The coming weeks and months will be critical … to turn the momentum that's been created by you around this table that the federal government is looking to add to, to translate that momentum, those ideas, into action.' In a letter to Carney released Monday, the Assembly of First Nations warned that there has not been enough time or consultation with Indigenous communities that will be impacted by any proposed legislation to fast-track approvals for projects. AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak said regional chiefs and her office received a letter from Ottawa outlining the intent to change the law, along a three-page background document and an invitation to comment by the end of last week — an 'unacceptably tight deadline.' She wrote that the actual legislation was not shared and demanded to see a copy, while signalling the government must engage with each First Nation 'as rights holders and not to advocacy organizations like the AFN.' The AFN warned that parliamentary committees — where proposed laws are studied in depth — cannot accommodate 'the numbers of First Nations likely wishing to engage on a matter of this magnitude and significance,' nor do committee hearings provide the in-depth legal analysis and consultation she said the federal government is obliged to carry out. Woodhouse Nepinak said the AFN supports 'efforts to protect' Canada and First Nations from 'geopolitical and economic uncertainty,' but she emphasized the government must respect its duty under the constitution and international law to consult and accommodate First Nations' rights. Repeatedly citing the United Nations' Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and what the AFN says is a comprehensive duty to ensure Indigenous engagement and consent at all stages in the legislative and approval process for projects, Woodhouse Nepinak predicted protests and lawsuits to come. 'If free, prior and informed consent is not obtained from First Nations, this legislation will be marred and mired in conflict and protracted litigation.' She said Carney's plan to concentrate authority in 'one federal minister risks marginalizing First Nations' oversight and voices,' and 'one window approval means the constitutional and international rights of First Nations may be dealt with unevenly across the country.' When it comes to 'nation-building projects,' the national chief urged 'Canada to start with fast-tracking the basics like clean water, quality housing, modern schools, all-season roads and community infrastructure.' She said she raised the need to close the infrastructure gap when she met Carney in Ottawa last week.
