Archaeologists uncover identity of 1700s Orkney shipwreck

Expert say the vessel discovered on the island of Sanday last year is most likely the Earl of Chatham, a former Royal Navy vessel called HMS Hind that was later renamed once it became a whaling ship.
Historic Environment Scotland (HSE), which funded the research, said the sixth-rate 24-gun frigate saw many years of active service, including sieges of Louisbourg and Quebec in the 1750s and the American Revolutionary War in the late 1770s.

Once it was decommissioned, it was sold and renamed the Earl of Chatham, becoming a 500-tonne whaling ship.
HSE said this was common for Royal Navy ships because their build quality allowed them to withstand the icy conditions of British whaling routes.
As the Earl of Chatham, it completed four seasons in the Arctic before ultimately meeting its end in the Bay of Lopness in March 1788.
It carried 56 sailors on board at the time, all of whom survived.

Wessex Archaeology, along with with Dendrochronicle and volunteer community researchers, began working on its origins following its discovery in February 2024.
Analysis of the wood determined the ship was built with timber from south and south-west England.
Archaeologists from Wessex Archaeology, local community researchers, and the Sanday Heritage Centre then spent several months working with archives and community records to find the most likely candidate for the ship.

This research was also supported by Sanday Heritage Group and Orkney Archaeology Society.
The Sanday Wreck was revealed last year thanks to changes in the climate. Increased storminess and unusual wind patterns led to removal of the covering sands which had hidden and protected the wreck for centuries.
Changes to coastlines, which are predicted to accelerate in coming decades, could make similar finds more common.

Ben Saunders, senior marine archaeologist at Wessex Archaeology, said: 'It is thanks to our dedicated team of community researchers and the evidence they have gathered that means we have been able to identify the Sanday Wreck with a reasonable degree of confidence.
'Throughout this project, we have learned so much about the wreck, but also about the community in Sanday in the 1780s.
'Sanday was infamous for shipwrecks at the time, called 'the cradle of shipwrecks in Scotland', but the community was equally well-known for its hospitability as it looked after sailors who fell afoul of the area's stormy seas.
'We are grateful to the support from our partners, and we're delighted to be able to share our work on this intriguing wreck.'

Alison Turnbull, director of external relations and partnerships at HES, said: 'The discovery of the Sanday Wreck is a rare and fascinating story.
'Wessex Archaeology worked closely with the community of Sanday to discover the ship's identity, which shows that communities hold the keys to their own heritage.
'It is our job to empower communities to make these discoveries and be able to tell the story of their historic environment.
'We are proud to have grant-funded this work, which supports both Scotland's archaeology strategy of making archaeology matter, and Scotland's national strategy for the historic environment – Our Past, Our Future.'

The timbers are currently housed in a freshwater tank at the Sanday Heritage Centre to conserve them. There visitors can find out more about the wreck's story and Sanday's history.

Fire crews on scene of church fire as 'landmark' listed building destroyed

Emergency services remain on the scene of a fire at a church in Cumbernauld that has burned overnight. Seven fire engines and specialist resource were called to St Mungo's Church on St Mungo's Road around 7.50pm on Saturday. The building was described as 'well-ablaze' forcing the evacuation of a number of properties nearby. Due to the volume of smoke, residents of Cumbernauld town centre and Seafar were urged to stay indoors and keep their windows closed. Three fire engines remain on the scene as of Sunday morning with the blaze described as 'under control' There are no reports of any casualties. St Mungo's Road has been closed to businesses, residents and pedestrians. A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: 'With regard to the fire at St Mungo's church in Cumbernauld, emergency services remain at scene. 'The fire is under control, and there no reports of any injuries. 'No further requirement to remain indoors or to keep windows and doors closed. 'St Mungo's Road is still closed to businesses, residents and pedestrians. 'Enquiries into the cause of the blaze ongoing.' St Mungo's Church is a B-listed building dating back to the 1960s. Historic Environment Scotland describes it as a 'striking landmark in the centre of Cumbernauld'. It adds: 'Prominently sited on the top of a small hill, the bold copper pyramidal roof is an important landmark. Alan Reiach designed two churches in Cumbernauld, both of which can accommodate 800, Kildrum Church – the earlier of the two. Alan Reiach (1910-1992), who was apprenticed to Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929), was primarily involved in the design of public buildings, including churches, schools, universities and hospitals. 'Noteworthy features of St Mungo's Parish Church include the bold pyramidal roof, with apex of which forms a roof light lighting the nave of the church, and above this is a pyramidal belfry. 'The impressive Baltic redwood-lined interior gains natural light from the large central rooflight and clerestory windows.' Councillor Alan Masterton for Cumbernauld North described the incident as 'very sad'. He added: 'Very sad to see another listed building in Cumbernauld on fire tonight with St Mungo's Church well ablaze, following the fire at Cumbernauld Theatre a few weeks ago.' 'Deeply loved' siblings Ameiya, 13, and Ricardo Junior Parris, 11, died on a 'dream' holiday in Spain after being caught in strong currents while swimming on the beach Two siblings who tragically drowned on a 'dream' holiday were 'water babies' who went swimming every day, a close relative has said. ‌ Ameiya, 13, and Ricardo Junior Parris, 11, were pulled from the water at Llarga Beach in Salou, Spain on Tuesday evening after getting into difficulty in strong currents. The brother and sister were pronounced dead a short time later. Their father, 31-year-old Ricardo Parris, 31, was also rushed to hospital after swimming out to try and save his children. He was rescued from the water unconscious, and has since been discharged from hospital after suffering a concussion. ‌ ‌ The two children from Birmingham - known to family and friends as 'Maya' and 'Jubs' - had been on holiday with their parents and four other siblings. Now, their auntie Kayla Delbrocco has told of how the kids had spent "every day" of the holiday in the sea, and had always been good at swimming. She said to The Sun: "It was supposed to be a special day - the kids love the beach, they go every day. ‌ "They've always been water babies - they'd been in every day. We had gone on holiday together there six years ago, so they were excited to go back and knew what to expect." Dad Ricardo had taken the siblings for one final swim while Shanice, a full-time mother and former teaching assistant, took the rest of the children back to Hotel Best Negresco, where they were staying. ‌ A hotel worker spotted the children struggling in the water from reception and had called for help. When Shanice returned to the beach, the ambulances and police cars were already there, and Junior was taken away in a helicopter. Family members flew out on Wednesday to comfort Ricardo and Shanice. The younger siblings - Cassius, six, Cleopatra, five, Asher, three, and Exodus, almost one - have been told. ‌ A GoFundMe page set up to support the family and help repatriate Ameiya and Ricardo's bodies has now raised over £43,000. In a tribute to the "beautiful, bright, and deeply loved" children, cousin Holly Marquis-Johnson wrote: "Maya was intelligent, thoughtful, and growing into a strong young woman. Ricardo Junior was playful, kind, and always smiling. "They brought so much love, laughter, and energy into the lives of everyone around them. Their absence has left an unbearable silence not just for their parents, but for their whole family, who were incredibly close and shared an unbreakable bond." A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of two British children who have died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."
