
Airport staff paid bonuses to catch out passengers with oversized bags
Staff at Swissport, an aviation company which provides services at 296 airports, including running passenger gates, are 'eligible to receive £1.20 (£1 after tax) for every gate bag taken', according to a leaked company email.
Dubbed 'the easyJet gate bag revenue incentive', the scheme was billed as aiming to 'reward agents doing the right thing' and would result in 'payments made directly to employees'.
The email was sent to Swissport employees at airports in Belfast, Birmingham, Glasgow, Jersey, Liverpool and Newcastle in November 2023 by Dean Martin, a company manager based in Glasgow. The policy is understood to still be in force.
EasyJet's baggage policy allows passengers to take a small under-seat cabin bag onto flights for 'free', but charges between £5.99 and £32.99 for larger luggage which requires the use of overhead lockers.
Travellers are often required to place their luggage in a metal frame or box that is fitted to the dimensions of under-seat and overhead locker baggage allowances. Should the bags not fit, passengers can be charged £48.
Policy 'puts staff in danger'
A source, who wished to remain anonymous, previously told the Jersey Evening Post that the policy had been deeply unpopular with Swissport staff because they would get into rows with passengers at boarding gates.
'You get a family going on holiday with a couple of kids, and when they get to the gate, you're taking another £80 off them for two bags. A lot of passengers get stroppy about it, and it's the staff who are getting the flak for that,' the source said.
A Swissport passenger service manager, speaking on condition of anonymity, also told The Sunday Times: 'Confronting people with excess baggage is like taking on fare dodgers.
'You risk abuse or worse – imagine stopping a group of lads on a stag weekend and telling them: 'I'm going to have to charge you more than you paid for your tickets to check those bags into the hold'.'
Ground handlers working for DHL Supply Chain, a third-party firm, at Gatwick, Bristol and Manchester airports also reportedly have a remuneration package for identifying non-compliant easyJet bags.
EasyJet, which recorded an annual revenue of more than £9 billion in 2024, has oversight of incentives available to employees at third-party companies.
Bag rules 'well understood'
A spokesman for the airline said: 'EasyJet is focused on ensuring our ground handling partners apply our policies correctly and consistently in fairness to all our customers.
'Our bag policies and options are well understood, and we remind customers of this when booking, before they travel and on their boarding pass, which means a very small proportion of customers who don't comply will be charged at the airport.'
The EU recently proposed introducing new standardised rules for airlines, which would allow passengers to bring one personal item, such as a handbag or a backpack, and one item of cabin baggage weighing less than 7kg on board 'free' of charge.
The shake-up, which was put forward last month, would apply to any flight taking off or landing in the EU but requires the approval of 55 per cent of member nations before it can come into force.

Airport staff are earning cash bonuses for every easyJet passenger they spot travelling with an oversized bag, according to a leaked email. Staff at Swissport, an aviation company that operates passenger gates at airports, are 'eligible to receive £1.20 (£1 after tax) for every gate bag taken', according to the message sent to staff at seven airports in the UK and the Channel Islands, including Birmingham, Glasgow, Jersey and Newcastle. The payments are to 'reward agents doing the right thing', according to the email explaining the 'easyJet gate bag revenue incentive' scheme. For staff concerned about meeting targets, 'internal tracking will be used to identify opportunities for further support and training for individual agents, but will not be used negatively', it said. The email and its contents was first reported by the Jersey Evening Post. It also emerged that ground handlers employed by another aviation firm, DHL Supply Chain, at Gatwick, Bristol and Manchester airports are also paid extra for identifying non-compliant easyJet bags. The employees receive 'a nominal amount' for each bag, the Sunday Times reported. Swissport ground handlers earn about £12 an hour. One former Swissport passenger service manager, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Sunday Times they had no choice but to police the line on oversized baggage. Under the proposed new rule, travellers could carry on a cabin bag measuring up to 100cm (based on the sum of the dimensions), as well a personal bag, at no additional cost. The law requires approval from 55% of EU member states, and if adopted it would extend to all flights within the EU as well as routes to and from the EU.

Partick Thistle FC asks fans to offer their spare rooms to future stars
It is hard to imagine the wealthy 'galacticos' of Europe's top sides ever slumming it in the spare room of one of their supporters. But community-minded Partick Thistle has urged its fans to throw open the doors of their homes to provide digs for its future stars. The club, which is owned by its supporters, has asked for help in providing any out-of-town signings with a roof over their head. The Scottish Championship side, which missed out on a lucrative promotion to the Scottish Premiership at the end of last season, has insisted the move is not due to financial pressures but to promote better player integration. A spokesman told the Daily Record: 'As a fan-owned club, we're always keen to involve Thistle supporters where we can and this is a great example of that. 'Embedding new players and potential new recruits in the community that surrounds our club helps them to settle more quickly and also provides valuable support in lots of ways when moving to a new city. 'It is common practice at clubs of all sizes across the UK. It's not a reflection of financial constraints, but rather part of our broader approach to community integration.' It comes after the Firhill club made several domestic signings this year including Sean Kelly, 32, who joined the Jags in February on a deal until the end of the season and keeper Lewis Budinauckas, 23, who returned to the club last month on a one-year contract. Irish-born defender Dan O'Reilly, 30, also signed for the Scottish Championship side in January last year on an 18-month contract with a one-year contract extension in October. Thistle have faced financial challenges in previous seasons, particularly since their relegation from the Scottish Premiership at the end of the 2017-2018 season. The latest accounts show the club's turnover was £3,203,875 in the year ending May 31, 2024, compared to £2,817,844 the previous year. Paint brushes, paint as well as other equipment and materials will be supplied.' In May it was confirmed that Mark Wilson would become permanent head coach. The Partick Thistle spokesman added: 'This initiative has been introduced by our recently appointed Sporting Director Ian Baraclough who has worked at both club and international football in recent seasons. He views it as best practice especially with the safeguarding checks that the club would undertake.'
