Why BJP's Goa govt faces corruption storm from its own again

India Today4 days ago

In a political maelstrom, the Pramod Sawant-led BJP government in Goa has come under fire from its own minister Govind Gaude, who has charged it with corruption and malfeasance. In March, former minister and senior BJP leader Pandurang Madkaikar had alleged that ministers in the state were 'busy counting money' and 'looting' Goa. He even claimed he had paid Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh to a minister to get work done.advertisementMadkaikar, who belongs to the Hindu Gauda Scheduled Tribe (ST) community, is a former four-term MLA from Cumbarjua. Gaude too belongs to the Gauda community, which has a significant presence among STs.Speaking at a 'Prerana Din' event organised by the tribal welfare department and the United Tribal Association Alliance on May 25, Gaude, who holds the art and culture portfolio in the government, lashed out at the department, which is under the chief minister himself.
'Prerana Din' is commemorated in the memory of two tribal youngsters killed in mob violence on May 25, 2011 in Balli, around 50 km from state capital Panaji, while they were agitating for demands such as political reservation for STs, notification of scheduled areas and formation of a tribal advisory council. The protests had taken a violent turn and the two youth were burnt alive. The subsequent elections in 2012 saw a backlash from the tribal electorate against the then Congress government, and the BJP was voted to power.advertisementGaude charged that contractors were asked to pay slush money to get their works done. He claimed taxpayer money was not being utilised efficiently. The allegations came as a major embarrassment for Sawant and his government. A visibly upset chief minister promised 'appropriate action' against Gaude. 'Responsible ministers must make responsible statements,' he said.BJP state president Damodar 'Damu' Naik told INDIA TODAY 'the party will take appropriate action' against Gaude. 'We will summon him and ask for an explanation This is a disciplined party, and there are appropriate forums to take up wrongdoings, if any. We will initiate disciplinary action,' Naik said.Incidentally, a reshuffle of the Sawant cabinet has been long pending. It is expected that some ministers will be replaced.Goa legislative assembly speaker Ramesh Tawadkar too came out strongly and asked Gaude to make statements responsibly. Tawadkar and Gaude, both tribal leaders, are said to be at odds. Tawadkar had organised a rally named after tribal icon Birsa Munda, with Gaude questioning the utility of the campaign. While Tawadkar is said to be close to Sawant, Gaude is reported to be close to his challenger Vishwajit Rane, the health minister. The son of former chief minister and Congress veteran Pratapsingh Raoji Rane, Vishwajit quit the Congress and joined the BJP in 2017. He was re-elected from Valpoi constituency in north Goa.advertisementThe Ranes come from a prominent Maratha feudal family with its base in Sattari, and Rane Senior has been the longest-serving chief minister of Goa. He was also the speaker of the Goa assembly. Vishwajit is said to be eager to occupy the chair that his father once sat on.However, Gaude later complained that his statement had been 'misinterpreted' and that he had not said anything against Sawant. Gaude, who went out of station after the controversy broke, also met Sawant later. Gaude has described Sawant as his 'friend' and added that the chief minister had been sensitive to the demands of STs. Gaude also secured support from the United Tribal Associations' Alliance, led by former MLA Prakash Velip. But Gaude's charges have prompted the Opposition to target the government. The Congress's Captain Viriato Fernandes, Lok Sabha MP from South Goa, said Gaude had spoken the truth about corruption. 'This government has become a den of corruption,' he alleged. He said taking action against Gaude was akin to 'shooting the messenger'.Gaude, 53, is an engineer and businessman. He is also an amateur theatre artiste.advertisementIn 2017, Gaude won as an Independent after defeating Pandurang 'Deepak' Dhavalikar of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). He joined the BJP and retained his seat in 2022. Deepak's elder brother Ramakrishna 'Sudin' Dhavalikar is the power minister in the Sawant cabinet, and Gaude has a bristling relationship with the Dhavalikar brothers.Incidentally, Gaude has come under fire for technical glitches and allegations of corruption in the renovation of the Kala Academy Goa. The academy was established by the state government in 1970 as an apex body to develop music, dance, drama and fine arts. Last year, Gaude found himself in the eye of the storm over a purported audio clip of him allegedly abusing and threatening a government officer. Assembly speaker Tawadkar had also charged Gaude with misappropriation of funds. While North Goa is estimated to have a tribal population of 56,606, around 7 per cent of the population, it is 92,669 or 14.5 per cent of the population for South Goa. Put together, the tribal population in Goa is around 10.23 per cent, which includes Christians. In addition, the pastoralist Gouly Dhangar community is also seeking inclusion in the ST category.advertisementAdivasis are regarded as the original settlers and inhabitants of Goa. In 2003, the Gauda, Velip and Kunbi communities were added to the ST category. Though the STs and Scheduled Castes (SCs) have 12 per cent and 2 per cent quotas respectively in jobs and education, the STs have not been given political reservations in the legislative assembly. However, the SCs have one seat reserved for them in the house—Pernem bordering Maharashtra in North Goa, which is represented by Pravin Arlekar of the BJP. The state has four tribal MLAs, who have been elected from general seats: Tawadkar (Canacona), Gaude (Priol), Ganesh Gaonkar (Sanvordem), who belong to the BJP, and Independent Antonio Vas (Cortalim). Vas has declared his support for the BJP.Subscribe to India Today Magazine

Charges framed against AAP MP Sanjay Singh in model code violation case; next hearing on Jul 5

Singh's advocate, Madan Pratap Singh, said that the AAP leader appeared in court on Tuesday as it turned down his application for discharge and accepted the charge-framing petition, proceeding to formally frame charges against him. The court also rejected Singh's discharge plea and scheduled the next hearing for July 5. Sultanpur (UP), Jun 3 (PTI) A special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur on Tuesday framed charges against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh in a case related to violation of the model code of conduct and COVID-19 guidelines four years ago. The matter was then posted for next month due to the absence of two other accused in the case. The case dates back to April 13, 2021, when, during the panchayat elections, Singh was accused of holding a public meeting without permission in Hasanpur village under Bandhua Kala Police Station limits. The politician was then allegedly campaigning for AAP district panchayat candidate Salma Begum. Police then filed an FIR against Singh and 13 named and 45 unnamed people for allegedly violating the model code and COVID-19 protocols, the lawyer said. While the other named in the case secured bail earlier, a bailable warrant was issued against Singh for failing to appear in court. He surrendered in July 2024 and was granted bail on furnishing two sureties of Rs 20,000 each along with a personal bond, the lawyer said. Following the investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet in the court naming Maksood Ansari, Saleem Ansari, Jagdish Yadav, Maksood, Sukai, Dharmraj, Zeeshan, Sahban, Sikandar, Jaleel, and Ajay – all of them natives of Hasanpur — as co-accused in the matter, he added. Delhi CM Gupta warns of police action against ‘demolition' rumourmongers

She also stated that no street vendors with the PM Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme documents will be displaced from their locations, according to a statement. Gupta, who held a meeting on illegal demolitions, also asserted that no slums would be demolished without providing permanent houses to their inhabitants. New Delhi, Jun 3 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday said that those spreading 'rumour' of slum demolitions in the city will face police action. The ruling BJP is facing a lot of criticism from opposition parties over the demolition of the Madrasi camp slum in south Delhi. 'The chief minister stated that some individuals are spreading misinformation about slum demolitions, whereas the government has assured that no slum will be demolished without providing permanent housing to the residents,' the statement said. Strict action will be taken against those spreading such rumours, it said. During the meeting, Gupta directed officials to maintain sewage, drainage, drinking water, roads, street lighting, community toilets, and waste management in slum clusters. 'It is our responsibility to ensure they receive the same facilities as other city residents. Our goal is not just redevelopment but also improving their quality of life,' she said. The redevelopment of all slum clusters in Delhi will be carried out in a phased manner, said. PTI VIT VN VN This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Kamal Haasan remarks: Karnataka HC raps actor for refusing to apologise

Haasan's production house, Raaj Kamal Films International, had sought adequate security for the movie's release in the state amid widespread protests and a boycott call by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce following the actor's remark. The KFCC has also demanded that Haasan apologise. The movie will not be released in Karnataka on June 5, the scheduled date for the pan-India release, its producers told the court on Tuesday, following which it postponed the hearing to June 10. Bengaluru, Jun 3 (PTI) Here are some of the observations made by the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday as it rapped the actor-politician Kamal Haasan for refusing to apologise for his 'Kannada was born out of Tamil' remark while hearing a plea seeking protection for release of his movie 'Thug Life' in the state. Observing that a 'single apology (by Haasan) could have resolved the situation,' Justice Nagaprasanna said, 'Freedom of expression cannot be extended to the extent of hurting someone's sentiment, of a mass in particular.' Noting that the actor's recent statement has stirred the hornets' nest and triggered certain unrest in Karnataka among the people, the Judge said it has undermined the sentiment of language attached to the people of the state. 'Language is an emotional and cultural identity of a people,' and stressed that no individual has the right to make comments that undermine the pride of an entire linguistic community, the court observed. Justice Nagaprasanna asked, 'Are you (Kamal Hassan) a historian or a linguist to make such a statement? No language is born out of another. A single apology could have resolved the situation.' 'Jala, Nela, and Bashe (Water, land, and language) are crucial to citizens. The division of this country itself was based on linguistic lines,' he observed. Pointing out that C Rajagopalachari (the then Governor-General of India) made a similar statement about the language but apologised for it, the Judge said, '….If Rajagopalachari could tender a public apology 75 years ago, why can't you (Kamal Haasan)? For your commercial interest, you have approached this court seeking police protection for a situation created by you.' Citing from the petition that Rs 300 crore is spent on the movie Thug Life and after Nayagan this was the first cinema by Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam together, Justice Nagaprasanna said, 'You (Haasan) know the importance (of the movie), but you can't make a statement (of apology)…..you want your film to run smoothly in a state whose sentiments you have hurt. If you are not concerned about it, why do you want it to be run in Karnataka. Leave it.' PTI KSU HIG This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
