Jollibee's first Oregon location opens today. See where they're expanding next

LOS ANGELES – Jollibee is set to open its first location in Oregon May 30, marking the bee's first foray into the Beaver State.
The location at 10875 N.E. Cornell Road in Hillsboro will offer the first 50 in-store customers and the first 50 drive-thru customers one six-piece bucket of Chickenjoy fried chicken per month free for a year and an exclusive Jollibee t-shirt, according to a press release.
"The Portland metro area has a vibrant food scene that embraces international flavors, so we can't wait to introduce our joyfully unique dining experience to the area's residents and visitors, especially those seeking new and exciting culinary experiences," Maribeth Dela Cruz, Business Group Head, Honeybee Foods Corporation dba Jollibee said in the release.
The Filipino fast-food chain, whose U.S. operations are based in West Covina just east of Los Angeles, opened two stores in New Jersey earlier this year.
Jollibee was named the best fast-food fried chicken purveyor in 2024 by USA TODAY 10Best.

This Fast Food Chain Makes the Best Burgers (and You're Sleeping on Them)

Jollibee, a fast food restaurant with a cult following, is no doubt most famous for its chicken (and peach mango pies, if you ask me). But the brand recently launched Angus burgers that give the heavyweight chains a run for their money. I, a food editor, headed to the nearest location to try all three of them, plus the standard burgers (which are thinner, smaller and not made with Angus beef), to see if I could taste the difference in quality. Read on for my honest takes, original photos and overall ranking. (Note: Prices are rounded to the nearest half-dollar. Pricing and item availability may vary by location.) The 14 Best Fast Food Fries, Ranked by a Food Editor Taryn Pire What Is It: Angus beef, smash-seared on the grill and topped with melted cheese, grilled pineapple, crispy bacon, green leaf lettuce and aloha dressing on a butter-toasted bun Price: $9.50 Full disclosure: I'm not a bacon-on-my-burger type person. (Generally, the simpler the toppings, the better—in my book, anyway.) However, I thought its smoky, salty notes played well with the sweet-and-sour pineapple. There was a brown sugar-y like char on the fruit that offered tasty contrast and an intriguing aroma to the burger, which starred a very crisp patty. Learn more Taryn Pire What Is It: Angus beef, smash-seared on the grill and topped with melted cheese, pickles, red onion, Roma tomatoes, green leaf lettuce, ketchup and signature sauce on a butter-toasted bun Price: $6.50 If you're someone who gets a cheeseburger with all the fixings at places like Friday's or Chili's, the Deluxe is the way to go. With more produce to offer crisp, cool contrast to the meat and cheese, it was balanced, satiating and photogenic. Personally, I think the tomato and lettuce were superfluous, given how tasty the rest of the burger was (more on the sans-veggie version below). But this was as good, if not better than, any fast casual or chain resto. Learn more Taryn Pire What Is It: Angus beef, smash-seared on the grill and topped with melted cheese, pickles, red onion, ketchup and signature sauce on a butter-toasted bun Price: $6 This was basically the perfect smash burger, complete with crisp, craggy edges and an all-around sear. I didn't love the slightly neon color of the burger sauce, but I enjoyed its tangy, mustardy flavor. The Angus patties were thicker than the standard burgers (read on for details) and very beefy, savory and rich. I loved the range of textures between the crisp onion, the crunchy, sour pickles and the luscious cheese-topped beef. The sauces also brought plenty of tang to the party. Learn more Taryn Pire What Is It: beef patty with melted cheese and signature sauce on a bun Price: $5 Don't get it twisted: The Angus burgers are a step up in quality, but the beef in Jollibee's Yumburgers is genuinely scrumptious. It has an oniony, sweet-and-savory quality that may conjure memories of Salisbury steak or meatloaf. With cheese, the consistency is super creamy and rich. Think backyard burger, minus the char, on a soft, fluffy bun. Learn more Taryn Pire What Is It: beef patty with signature sauce on a bun Price: $4.50 I've never ordered a cheese-less burger in my life. But alas, duty called—and I was very pleasantly surprised. The sauce's slightly sweet edge played beautifully with the seasoned beef, which was tender and surprisingly juicy throughout. The TLDR? You can't go wrong with a Jollibee burger, Angus or not. Manny Pacquiao shares realisation and ‘perfect' news that inspired comeback

Manny Pacquiao has shared the revelation that inspired his return to professional boxing after a four-year absence, as the 46-year-old prepares to face Mario Barrios. On 19 July, Pacquiao will challenge Barrios, 30, for the WBC welterweight title, aiming to break his own record as the division's oldest-ever world champion. Pacquiao set the current record at 40 years old, when he beat Keith Thurman in 2019, while his most recent pro bout was a loss to Yordenis Ugas in 2021. The Filipino icon has not boxed professionally since, though he fought kickboxer Rukiya Anpo in an exhibition last summer. 'I like making history, it's nice,' a smiling Pacquiao told ESPN this week. 'I always stay in shape, but once I started seriously working out again, I realised that I still had that passion and ability in me. 'I went to my doctor and everything was perfect. My medicals came back great. I feel good, and I'm ready to do it again. 'I trained wrong for that [Ugas] fight. My legs began cramping, and I couldn't move. He was a very slow opponent, and I couldn't believe that I couldn't move my feet or my legs. But for this camp, I'm back with my longtime trainer, Freddie Roach. The old Manny will be back. 'It's hard to say right now [if I'll box again after the Barrios bout]. It's one fight at a time. Once I get through this, we can talk about the next fight.' WBC rules state that all title holders must defend their belts against a 'Qualified Challenger', including any former WBC champion. As such, Pacquiao, who recently re-entered the WBC rankings at No 5, is eligible for a title shot against Barrios. Pacquiao, who will enter the Las Vegas fight with Barrios (29-2-1, 18 knockouts) with a pro record of 62-8-2 (39 KOs), is widely considered one of boxing's all-time greats. He is the sport's only eight-weight world champion. He is also known for his political endeavours in his home country of the Philippines, where he served as a senator from 2016 until 2022. He also ran for president in 2022 but was unsuccessful, and last month came up short in a senatorial race.

Ambitious Filipino Venture Exits H Street

In the latest blow to Northeast D.C., vet Filipino chef Paolo Dungca plans to close his casual cafe (Hiraya) and more formal sibling up top (Kayu) on Monday, June 30. But there is some good news for the Northwest quadrant of the city: Kayu's next chapter is slated for Dupont, all due to one serendipitous meal Dungca's future landlord enjoyed on H Street. The owners of Dupont Italian Kitchen, who own the next-door building where Kayu is going (1633 17th Street NW), came for dinner in January. 'They had a great time and loved the food and asked me to go see the space — they thought it would be a nice addition to the neighborhood,' says Dungca, who's looking at a late summer opening. He plans to pause Hiraya until 'we find a space more suited for it.' Hiraya was born years ago as a polished prix fixe place in the Block food hall downtown. For Hiraya 2.0, Dungca partnered with Juan and Jeremy Canlas — the father-son duo behind local chains like Supreme Barbeque and Auntea Boba. The H Street iteration that opened in 2023 was a leafy, all-day destination for vibrant rainbow lattes, Filipino pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and duck adobo. An upstairs tasting room later called Kayu capped off the project in 2024 (1248-1250 H Street NE). 'Unfortunately, we had to dissolve our partnership with Paolo,' Jeremy Canlas tells Eater. 'Business wasn't doing well, and we couldn't do both [Hiraya and Kayu], between overhead and costs and all that. It's not something we wanted to do, but we have to do.' Canlas says he plans to transform Hiraya's downstairs cafe into a dual destination for wagyu smash burgers, loaded fries, and chopped cheese (Double Up) and bubble teas (Auntea Boba). Look for breakfast burritos and coffee drinks in the morning from 8 to 11 a.m. The goal is to open on Thursday, July 10. His budding Double Up brand out of Maryland is opening another standalone location in D.C. this summer (1530 U Street NW), he tells Eater. Auntea Boba recently closed its storefront in NoMa, and H Street marks its return to the area. Going the fast-casual route isn't what Dungca had envisioned for the Filipino-run project. 'Going into business, you sometimes get pulled into different visions of how you want to continue the story,' says Dungca. 'For me, I just wanted to keep true to how we've been doing things so I think that's where it all fell through.' Dungca admits that operating a dual Filipino venture in one building was a struggle. 'Moving forward, Hiraya and Kayu definitely need to be two separate entities. It's hard to run multiple concepts — when the cafe was busy, the team was dragged up and down; it's not ideal and nice to just regroup,' he says. Still, leaving H Street wasn't ever the plan. 'If it was up to me I'd love to continue being a part of the neighborhood,' says Dungca. 'They embraced us and allowed us to share our culture and heritage.' Dungca had also teamed up with the Canlas family to open Sari Filipino Kusina, a fast-casual comfort food spot in Annandale. It closed in late 2024, and a Canlas-run, to-be-named offshoot is expected to go into Kayu's old space. Kayu's new 45-seat home is on par with the original, plus a 40-seat patio. The space most recently housed an Argentinian steakhouse, which closed in late 2023, and will undergo a light wooden refresh. Kayu's weekend brunch will showcase lots of Hiraya's greatest hits, he says. Think brisket and egg sandwiches, cheese-stuffed dough with truffle butter, and vibrant lattes from Filipino coffee supplier Sun & Stars. 'We're trying to keep the spirit alive until we find the next permanent home for it,' he says. As for dinner at Kayu, Dungca plans to stray from 'the classics' like sizzling sisig and adobo and 'dig deep' into regional Filipino cuisine, with a widened focus on veggies and seafood. 'There is some more research we can do to introduce the rich and diverse culture of where we came from,' says Dungca. 'Our job is to keep that and honor that on the menu and do due diligence.' His culinary team frequently travels to the Philippines and brings back inspiration that way. Dungca, who hasn't been back since 2019, has plans to go to the big Manila Food Festival in August (the trip may now be in limbo, however, due to the new opening). Dungca hails from the city of San Fernando in the Pampanga province northwest of Manila and migrated to Los Angeles with his family when he was 13. After moving to D.C. in 2014, he quickly worked his way up the ladder at some of D.C.'s most influential restaurants (Vidalia, Bad Saint, Restaurant Eve, Kaliwa, and ABC Pony). 'The majority of staff members have been with me since the beginning and through the early stages of my food career in D.C. They've turned into family at this point,' he says. For the closing week of Hiraya and Kayu at the end of the month, he plan to invite friends to cook 'and keep it fun.' Little Hiraya, Dungca's quick-serve extension in Union Market, remains open with all-day breakfast full of Filipino silog rice bowls. Despite its incoming closure on H Street, Kayu is up for a 2025 Rammy for New Restaurant of the Year — and Dungca is also nominated for Rising Culinary Star of the Year. Months after Vietnamese chef Kevin Tien closed Moon Rabbit at its Wharf digs, he won that same RAMW award in 2023. Sign up for our newsletter.
