CPM slams 'highhanded' police action against differently-abled in Dharmapuri

The Hindu22-04-2025

The CPM slammed police and the DMK government for its action against members of the differently-abled community.
Scores of differently-abled persons were deboarded from Chennai-bound buses and were arrested in a late-night crackdown on the protesters set to participate in the protests called by the TARATDAC (Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently-Abled and Caregivers) here on Monday night.
Tuesday's protests witnessed differently-abled persons steadfastly refusing to budge and eventually being picked up and held under arrest in Dharmapuri and was held in response to a call by TARATDAC for peaceful assembly in Chennai.
The TARATDAC had called for an assembly of the differently-abled in Chennai on Tuesday to highlight the long-standing demands of the disability rights organisation – starting with enhanced disability pension proportionate to the degrees of disability; reducing the number of working hours for the differently abled; and guaranteeing of employment for differently-abled under the MGNREGS.
On Monday night, hundreds of differently-abled people had boarded over 8 government buses to Chennai, while many had already left buses from Harur and other parts of the district. However, the Dharmapuri district police landed at the bus stand to prevent the buses from taking off, according to the TARATDAC members.
The Communist Party of India(Marxist) slammed the police and the DMK government alleging highhanded action.
In a bid to prevent mobilisation, district police here blockaded over 8 government buses Chennai-bound to participate in the protests called by the TARATDAC, says R. Sisubalan, district secretary, CPM.
Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Sisubalan slammed the police action. 'The highhandedness of the district police is condemnable. The right to peaceful assembly, unionisation, and all of which are guaranteed under the constitution. The entire night, the differently-abled members were put to immense hardship by the actions of the police.'

Daydreaming, EPS Dismisses CM Stalin's 2026 Assembly Election Target

Leader of Opposition and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) on Sunday dismissed Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's claim that the DMK-led coalition would win over 200 seats in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, calling it a 'daydream'. Speaking at the wedding of Arakkonam MLA S. Ravi's son, Palaniswami said, 'Stalin is daydreaming when he says his alliance will secure more than 200 Assembly seats in the next polls. It is, in fact, the AIADMK-led front that will form the next government in Tamil Nadu after 2026.' He also asserted that more political parties would soon join the AIADMK alliance, further strengthening its position. Highlighting achievements of the AIADMK during its previous tenure from 2016 to 2021, Palaniswami took credit for the creation of six new districts in Tamil Nadu, including Ranipet and Tirupattur, which were carved out of Vellore. He said the formation of these new administrative units enabled a better focus on underdeveloped regions. The former Chief Minister also listed several educational initiatives launched during the AIADMK regime, including the establishment of 11 new medical colleges, six law colleges, and additional engineering and agricultural colleges. "On the contrary, the DMK government is merely relaunching our schemes under new names by pasting their stickers on them,' he alleged. Palaniswami questioned the DMK's 2021 poll promise to build check dams worth Rs 2,000 crore across Tamil Nadu. 'How many check dams has the DMK government built so far? Every monsoon, excess rainwater simply drains into the sea due to poor planning,' he said. He further criticised the DMK for discontinuing pro-poor schemes introduced by the AIADMK, such as Amma Clinics and the Kudimaramathu initiative, which allowed farmers to desilt local waterbodies. 'This not only deepened water storage areas but also provided nutrient-rich silt for farmlands,' he said. Palaniswami also cited the AIADMK's introduction of the 7.5 per cent horizontal reservation for government school students in medical admissions as a landmark initiative. 'Thanks to this, 3,460 government school students have been able to pursue medicine since the 2020-21 academic year,' he said. The event was attended by former Minister and Tirupattur district in-charge K.C. Veeramani, along with several AIADMK functionaries and party cadre.

CPM protests demolition of Satavahana College

Vijayawada: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday spearheaded a protest and dharna programme here, condemning the demolition of Satavahana College. Women, students, and youth actively participated in thedemonstration, raising slogans to protect Satavahana College and its valuable land. The protest stemmed from the late-night demolition of the college building by bulldozers. When CPM leaders attempted to inspect the site, they were reportedly obstructed by police, who denied them entry, citing lack of permission. Protesters escalated their actions by climbing the gates and tearing down banners erected by private individuals, creating a tense atmosphere. Addressing the gathering, CPM State secretariat member Ch Baburao and State committee member Donepudi Kasinadh criticised the demolition. 'We have never witnessed such an incident in Vijayawada's history, where college buildings are brought down by bulldozers in the dead of night, right in the heart of the state capital, surrounded by ministerial offices and the Chief Minister's residence,' stated Baburao. He further alleged that the government has turned a blind eye while encroachers, with apparent government backing, have illegally seized the nearly 55-year-old Satavahana College which has the assets worth Rs 200 crore. 'Initially, former TDP MLC Alapati Rajendra Prasad was accused, and the government machinery remained passive. Now, another party has demolished the college in the dead of night,' he said. Baburao raised concerns about the future of students and faculty. The CPM leaders reiterated that the land is under Urban Land Ceiling, meaning it does not belong to private owners. Therefore, the CPM demanded the government to immediately take possession of the college run it as a government college. The CPM leaders accused all involved parties of colluding to plunder the college and its land. CPM State committee member K Sridevi, city secretaries B Ramana Rao and Boya Satyababu, P Krishna, and city leaders T Praveen, Vishnu, Korada Ramana, Chandrashekar, Suribabu, Peeru, Jhansi, Nageswara Rao, Asha, and others participated.
