Inside the final hour of her race, Gerda Steyn was on track to win her fourth Comrades Marathon title on Sunday.
The wily ultra star went out at a steady pace, content to let Elizabeth Mukoloma lead the way in the early stages of the race.
Earlier, in a first for the Comrades Marathon, the elites went off 15 minutes ahead of the rest of the field in what was an attempt to alleviate some of the congestion of runners at the start.
Just over the two-hour, 20-minute mark, Elizabeth Mukoloma had opened up a major gap over Steyn as she went out at a blistering pace. If she had been able to maintain that pace, it would have smashed the downrun record; therefore, it was just a matter of time before she would be caught and passed.

Gerda Steyn wins her fourth Comrades Marathon
Gerda Steyn laboured more than in previous victories but continued her dominance of the South African ultra-marathon running and the Comrades Marathon clinching her fourth win in the 2025 race. At on stage near the end the gap between Steyn and second-placed Aleksandra Morozova of Russia was less than three minutes approaching the finish. Steyn dug deep and ran into the People's Park finish strongly to take the win in an unconfirmed time of 5hrs 51min 19sec, well off her 5:44.54 in her 2022 win in the last down run in 2023. The 2025 race would always have slower times given it was run over 89.98km, about 2km more than the last down run in 2023 won by Dijana because of a finish at the People's Park outside Moses Mabhida Stadium due to renovations to the 2010 Fifa World Cup semifinal venue. However, Steyn did grimace and show unusual signs of strain in the last 10km coming into Durban. The women's race best time record-holder added to her wins in 2019, 2023 and 2024.

Dijana completes hat-trick of Comrades Down Run victories
TETE Dijana won an incredible third Comrades Marathon Down Run title on Sunday (June 8). The Nedbank Running Club athlete, who finished 14th at last year's Up Run, exorcised those painful memories to make it a hat-trick of victories outside People's Park in Durban. Dijana now holds the 2022, 2023 and 2025 Down Run titles. Last year's Comrades winner Piet Wiersma, who's earned the nickname 'The Flying Dutchman' finished in second while Nikolia Volkov finished in third place. Meanwhile in the ladies race, Gerda Steyn won her fourth Comrades Marathon title. Steyn, who represented South Africa at the Olympics last year, was all smiles as she crossed the finish line. Russia's Alexandra Morozova finished second to win her sixth gold medal. Shelmisth Muriuki became the first Kenyan woman to finish on the Comrades podium placing third. This year's Comrades Marathon, run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, is slightly longer than the 87.701km of the previous Down Run (2023), as the finish has been moved to outside People's Park at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. This is the 98th edition of the iconic ultra-distance marathon and the 49th Down Run overall. A field of over 22 000 runners are hoping to finish this year's Comrades Marathon before the final 12-hour cut-off gun is fired. For more from Berea Mail, follow us on Facebook, X and Instagram.
