Flick has Barcelona on cusp of return to European elite

Iraqi News14-04-2025

Berlin – Failing a collapse at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, Hansi Flick has Barcelona on track for the Champions League semi-finals and a return to the European elite after a rocky decade in Catalonia.
A semi-final placing, where Barcelona would likely be favourites to make the final, would represent the high-water mark so far for the Catalan giants in the post-Lionel Messi era.
Four points clear of Real Madrid in the league with seven games remaining, and also facing Los Blancos in the Copa del Ray final, Barcelona are enjoying their best season since Messi's departure.
Since winning it all in Berlin in 2015, Barcelona have only once made it back to the semi-finals of the Champions League. That came in 2018-19, although the match-up is one the Catalans would rather forget.
In that tie, Barcelona became a footnote in the story of an incredible comeback from title-bound Liverpool, letting a 3-0 first-leg win slip in a 4-0 defeat at Anfield.
The following season, Barcelona were thumped 8-2 by a Flick-coached Bayern Munich in the quarter finals.
Barcelona did not make it back to the quarter finals until 2023-24, when their 3-2 first-leg away win over Paris Saint-Germain lead was overturned in a 4-1 thumping at home.
Off the field, Barcelona have endured a seemingly endless run of financial scandals, alongside losing Messi, their best ever player, on a free transfer in 2021.
– 'We want to continue' –
This season however, with Messi's heir apparent Lamine Yamal firing alongside Raphina and veteran Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona look back to their best, particularly against top opposition.
Besides Wednesday's 4-0 win over Dortmund, last season's Champions League finalists, Barcelona's 4-1 win over Bayern in the group stages showed how ruthless Flick's side can be.
In two clashes with Real this season, Barcelona won 4-0 and 5-2.
Along with showing there is life after Messi at Barcelona, this season has been one of vindication for Flick.
Despite piloting Bayern to a six-trophy season including the Champions League in 2019-20, Flick's poor stint as Germany boss raised doubts about his ability.
Winning this season's Champions League final, at Munich's Allianz Arena no less, would show the 60-year-old truly belongs among the elite.
On Saturday, a beaming Flick told reporters: 'We've come this far, but we want to continue on this path.
'I'm absolutely enjoying being able to work with my coaching staff and this team. We've got an incredible atmosphere in the side.'
– 'Greatest miracle' –
The hosts on Wednesday may take inspiration from Liverpool's comeback five years ago under their former coach Jurgen Klopp, but are under no illusions about the scale of the task.
Struggling to fight back into European contention in the Bundesliga, Dortmund's 2-2 draw at Bayern on Saturday was a welcome response after the drubbing in Barcelona.
Sporting director Lars Ricken said Saturday 'we need the greatest miracle in the history of Borussia Dortmund' to get through to the semi-finals.
Ricken, a local product who was among the scorers on the club's greatest night — the 1997 Champions League final win over Juventus — is no stranger to big European nights in black and yellow.
'We have to try to win, whether that's enough to advance, I don't know.'
Calling himself 'an optimist but a realist', Dortmund coach Niko Kovac said his side wanted to save face on Tuesday.
'But without a spark, a spark of hope, it wouldn't make sense.
'Our ambition is to win the game. Is it 1-0, 2-1? We are playing at home so we would like to give a gift to all our supporters.'

Macron welcomes PSG team to presidential palace to celebrate their historic Champions League win

The winner of European club football's biggest prize arrived in Paris on Sunday afternoon and head to France's most famous avenue, the Champs-Élysées, which overnight Saturday saw acts of violence and clashes with police. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the Paris Saint-Germain football team to the presidential palace on Sunday to celebrate their historic Champions League win. Before meeting with Macron, PSG were paraded through the Champs-Elysee in an open roof coach bus. The team beat Italian side Inter Milan 5-0 in the tournament's final the day prior in Munich. It was the first time PSG ever won the title – having coming up short in their only previous final against Bayern Munich in 2020. French authorities say two people died after celebrations erupted around the country following the team's win. A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the city of Dax during a PSG street party, according to the national police. Another person was killed in Paris when his scooter was hit by a car during PSG celebrations, the interior minister's office said. The circumstances of both deaths are being investigated. The interior ministry also said 18 police officer in Paris were injured and hundreds of people were arrested. Macron condemned the 'unacceptable' violence which had occurred during celebrations following PSG's victory as he welcomed the team to the Elysee Palace. 'Nothing can justify what has happened in the last few hours, the violent clashes are unacceptable,' he said before congratulating the team.

Maresca targets European history for Chelsea in Conference League final

Wroclaw – Enzo Maresca is a man with a point to prove as he targets football history for Chelsea in Wednesday's UEFA Conference League final against Real Betis. Victory in the final round of Premier League matches at Nottingham Forest on Sunday secured qualification for next season's Champions League. Now Maresca's thoughts turn to Wroclaw and the chance for Chelsea to become the first team to win all five of UEFA's major men's club competitions. The Blues have twice won the Champions League, Europa League, Super Cup and the defunct Cup Winners' Cup and can now complete the set if they overcome Betis in the final of Europe's newest competition in Poland. Maresca has had a rollercoaster first season in charge at Stamford Bridge after replacing Mauricio Pochettino. His team were within touching distance of eventual Premier League champions Liverpool in mid-December before stumbling badly, but results picked up again towards the end of the campaign. Maresca, clearly frustrated, rounded on his critics after his youthful side secured fourth spot in the Premier League on Sunday with a 1-0 win at the City Ground. 'All the ones that (think) they are the answer, or all the ones that they are the truth, they were saying that we are too young, we are not good enough,' he said. 'Unfortunately for them, they'll be all wrong, the ones that (think) they are the truth and they have the answer for everything.' Maresca, who has also been criticised by fans over perceived cautious tactics, told that winning the Conference League would turn a good season into a 'great one' for Chelsea. 'It would be a way of saying that we are back and that we are a winning club in Europe, and we hope to achieve just that.' The west London club are still waiting to win their first silverware since Todd Boehly's consortium took over from former owner Roman Abramovich in 2022. The 2021 European champions were clear favourites to win the Conference League from the start of the competition and have won 11 of their 12 games. Former Leicester boss Maresca, 45, has rotated his squad during the competition, giving opportunities to youth and fringe players and has again stressed the need to make changes for Wednesday's match. – Pellegrini 'father figure' – Maresca will pit his wits against 71-year-old Manuel Pellegrini, a man whom he describes as a football 'father figure' after playing under him at Malaga and serving as assistant coach at West Ham. 'I am where I am today thanks to him,' he said. 'I worked with Manuel for four years — two years as a player and two years as part of his staff. So, I owe so much to him in terms of what I've achieved. 'I am grateful for the relationship we have and the advice he gives me. He told me never to change.' Immensely experienced ex-Real Madrid and Manchester City boss Pellegrini said his former protege was destined for a long career in football. 'You can often tell which players might go on to be good coaches —- from the impression they have on others, how they absorb concepts in training,' he said. 'With both Enzo and Willy (Caballero, Chelsea assistant coach), I was sure they'd go on to become influential coaches on a global level.' The Chilean, whose side finished sixth in La Liga, can call upon the talents of the rejuvenated Antony, on loan from Manchester United, and Isco, who won five Champions League trophies at Real Madrid. And the Seville-based club, playing in their first European final, can take heart from a remarkable statistic. Since the start of the 2001/02 season, all 23 Champions League, Europa League or Conference League finals that have featured Spanish hopefuls have been won by a Spanish team. Pellegrini wants to put on a 'show' in Wroclaw. 'We all know that winning is always very important, but I think that how you win makes it even more important,' he said.
