Austrian far-right party leader publicly expresses outrage over Zelenskyy's potential visit

Despite the lack of official confirmation, Herbert Kickl, the leader of the Austrian Freedom Party, has publicly criticised the visit as a "foreign policy blunder" that, in his view, "makes Austria a potential target in the event of escalation".
"This visit is yet another link in the chain of violations of neutrality and misleading neutrality policy in recent years," Kickl claimed. "As a neutral state, Austria should be a peacemaker and mediator, not a party to war."
Background:
This would be Zelenskyy's first visit to Austria since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In March 2023, the Ukrainian president addressed the Austrian parliament via video link.
In March 2025, Zelenskyy met Austria's new Chancellor Christian Stocker in Brussels.

He also reportedly called the prime minister of Norway last month to ask about his nomination, Norwegian press reported. The president has already garnered nominations from Pakistan, Cambodia, Israel, administration officials and GOP lawmakers as he touts his role in talks to end various global conflicts. The Friday summit at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, is the first time the U.S. and Russian leaders have convened face-to-face since Trump's first term. The president reassured European leaders earlier this week that he would not negotiate specific territorial swaps during the meeting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who will not be at the summit, has pushed back against any talk of ceding land to Moscow. Clinton was serving in the State Department when Putin returned to power in 2012 after a 4-year gap.

Europe's TTF Gas Price Drops Ahead of Alaska Summit
1358 GMT – European natural-gas prices drop to their lowest in more than a year ahead of a closely watched summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The benchmark Dutch TTF contract trades 3.1% lower to 31.13 euros a megawatt hour and is on track for a 4% weekly loss. If successful, the meeting could pave the way for further talks between Trump, Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Traders see little chance of Russian pipeline gas returning to Europe quickly, even if a Ukraine peace deal is struck. However, any progress toward ending the conflict is expected to put further pressure on energy prices and ease fears that U.S. sanctions could disrupt Russian flows.
